Vers l'avenir ("Towards the future"), less commonly known by its Dutch title "Naar wijd en zijd", is a Belgian nationalist song which was also the national anthem of the Congo Free State. Upon the annexation of the Congo Free State as a colony of Belgium, this anthem was replaced with La Brabançonne, the national anthem of Belgium. Vers l'avenir's lyrics were written by Gentil Theodoor Antheunis (1840-1907).

@@acalifourchone the Vers L'Avenir was originally not meant to be used by extremist parties nor was it meant to be used for the national anthem of the Congo Freestate, it's just unfortunate what happened to this wonderful chant. It was originally made to be well... Nothing more than a Belgian Nationalist/Royalist song and that's the entire meaning behind the song, it has nothing to do with Nazism nor mass genocide, it was written by a Belgian Nationalist not an idealogical hardliner. Sad to see that people think of this song that way.

Its a shame this beautiful song is tarnished by the Legacy of Rexism. I hope the Belgian people can put it behind them. To me, this song will always for the soldiers in the trenches, fighting for their homeland and their people. 90% of Belgium was overrun by imperial German forces and were treated less than Steller by their occupiers. Long live Belgium, Long live her people, Her freedom and her King

I hope people like you to start read more books. You judge after the end of the war, without taking none of the perspectives, standing in your comfortable chair in years of peace. Leon Degrelle is great man! If you was in his shoes i am sure that you were gonna hide between 1935-1945. Show little respect of the soldiers and the people, who fight and die for there country. Thouse years were all the way in dust and no man could know what was going to happend, instead of that they fight for the things they believed in. #Sorry for bad english, and dont take my comment pesonally. Regards from Bulgaria.

@@user-fi3xp3uu4k My respect is for the Soldiers and people, who fought and died for their country, their king, and their liberty in the face of aggression. I spit on Degrelle, a traitor and a bootlicker who sold his nation out to the Nazi's along with the rest of his cronies. I'm not Belgian, nor am I from Europe even. I've been lucky enough to have never known war and I hope that I and the rest of humanity goes through out their lives without experiencing it. So when you say not to take your comment personally, while making judgments on my character despite the fact you do not know me, I can't help but take it so. If I was in Degrelles shoes, assuming I held alt-right, anti parliamentarian beliefs which I do not, I would be like Paul Hoorneart - as any true Belgian would have. Degrelle was nothing less than a power hungry opportunistic traitor who escaped justice which was owed to the Belgian people.

Vers l'Avenir first became popular in Belgium among those fighting against the Germans in WWI. If you listen to the words in that context, it's truly beautiful and stirring. It was a unifying song of resistance among men who were proud to be fighting alongside their soldier-king Albert I to hold back the Germans; both Walloons and Flemish loved their king, and even when politics divided them, they remained united in love and respect for Albert until his untimely death in 1934. it's a shame this song got co-opted by a more divisive movement, and used bizarrely to welcome the interference of Germany. The veterans who fought in WW1 must have been appalled! My understanding is that Vers l'Avenir was also used to commemorate the Congo Free State becoming a colony of Belgium in 1908. In this modern era of tearing down everything in the past that smacks of oppression, people try to demonise the fact that the Belgian government took on the Congo as a colony, when in fact they were bringing long overdue order and justice to a land that had been privately owned and exploited by their abominable king. They were tardy in doing this, since it had been at least four years since credible sources came out of the Congo, detailing the atrocities committed there by Leopold II's private army, but at least they finally forced their aging king to turn it over to them in the last year of his reign! It was an embarrassment to the Belgian people and government, and they very responsibly decided to do something about it. So next time you hear about how badly the Belgians treated their colony, remember that it wasn't actually their colony at the time of the atrocities, and that colonisation was actually a praiseworthy attempt to do damage-control in the wake of their megalomaniac king's brutality. Every country has had bad people in its government at some point, but at least the Belgian government sought to rectify what Leopold II had been doing there. I would love to see this song used again, proudly, in the spirit it was written and used originally. I wish it could be taken back.
