Ruby Tuesday Hell, it'd at least get a few families off of our local 5000+ waiting list for Public Housing/Section 8 and into affordable housing. The same list that's been closed for a couple of years to new applicants, while they slowly work through the list as money trickles in, on a skeleton crew of workers. I'm not kidding about the skeleton crew. We have one housing inspector for our entire county, and we're not rural. In 2010, we had four, and even then it was hectic.

The Section 8 threshold for a 1BR apartment is $714/mo where I live. Most 1BR apartments in this area are going for $850 & up. Sometimes it doesn't even help to get kicked to the top of the long wait list because the places where the rent is cheaper have wait lists themselves, & you only have 60 days from date of approval for a housing voucher to find an apartment. Many landlords refuse to take it due to propaganda & lies that all Section 8 tenants are 'on welfare', 'on drugs', 'throw wild parties', 'wreck the place', etc - when it's mostly little old ladies, veterans in wheelchairs, blind people, etc who are in need of such housing help.

PS>The wait list for Section 8 in my county is TEN YEARS. They're to the point where they've put a freeze on accepting new applications. This is directly due to funding cuts for HUD.
