I'm not sure you can take information from Arsenal fan podcasts as the gospel... I heard those rumours too, but it wouldn't be the first time a fan podcast has 'leaked' absolute twaddle. And seeing as some of the comments here include things like 'He bottled the World Cup' - I feel safe to say my original comment stands and mot people commenting on the subject no sweet FA.

Firstly, comparing centre backs with wing backs is apples and oranges. CBs are always better defenders as it’s their main job. Secondly, John stones is the only English CB better than White. That’s it.

White should clearly be in the squad. Either as cover for Walker or as a CB along with Stones, Dunk, and Colwill. Maguire can't be picked when he is not playing first team football. Southgate is too conservative. He needs to be more adventurous and give this genuine golden generation a real chance of winning a tournament.

There was obviously a fall out, and plus white mainly plays right back for arsenal and we're stocked there. He also doesn't have the luxury and time to restablish players in another position when they're playing a certain position for their clubs week in week out. Yes his main position is centre back, but there are obviously time nuances and restraints, where you have to play everyone where they actually do play currently for their clubs. The club's set the template.

"The Arsenal man mysteriously dropped out of the squad and flew back to London last week with the FA citing 'personal reasons', but it's now understood he was dismissed for bad behaviour." If I could get the reason from a SKY reporter in Quatar ('off the record') then anyone could. The reason Southgate refuses to call him up is because in Quatar, White was told categorically by the staff that he was 3rd/4th choice, and wouldn't get a game. The same staff then told White he had to research and present a report on specific opposition players ahead of a match - for which he had no chance of playing! He basically said 'you're having a laugh, that's your job not mine' and rightly refused. He left the squad by mutual consent. It was pointless him being there. One day, there will be a journalist brave enough to put this in front of Southgate , and ask him why he is being such at w at.

The main reason England are doing so well under Southgate is, I believe, because of the timescale over which the EPL homegrown player rule was introduced. In the last few years, England have started to reap the benefits of the EPL effectively forcing EPL teams to invest heavily in the development of English players for the previous decade, meaning that England now has a far broader base of young national-standard footballers to call upon than it ever has before. In the 90's and 2000's, EPL teams would trot off to random African and South American countries and come back with some random teenagers who they would train up to be the future stars of their team. The implementation of the homegrown player rule means that business model is no longer viable, so they focus most of their scouting within England now. (I say this not as somebody working in the football industry, but it's the obvious logical response to the rule). Southgate is benefiting from the timing of that rule, because this wave of talented young English footballers started to arrive not long after he took over as coach. This makes it look like Southgate is a competent manager, when he's riding on the coattails of the talented English players. If Southgate was replaced with a genuinely good manager, and if the homegrown player rule and wealth of the EPL remains in place, I think it would be just a couple of years before England would have a world cup or euros trophy to show off.

Southgate is a fraud manager picking players who dont play regularly & leaving players out who are playing well I.e white,sterling & Ward Prouse. Managers I would suspect have fallings out with players all the time but would continue to pick them because they are good for the team/ squad he ain’t got the minerals to do that.
