Spot on. Maguire, did his job ...sure, as expected as Roy Keane would say. It's easier too when you have two holding midfielders compensating for your lack of pace and ability. However, he always gets found out against the creme de la creme. In fact, two of the weakest links in defence...pickford and maguire were partially at fault for both goals. ...I believe one of them could have been stopped...two players many questioned before the tournament. Also its tedious how Southgate always two defensive midfielders. Henderson wasn't needed against France... Also it took Southgate a while to finally start Foden which makes me question his judgement... At the END OF THE DAY...England have a winning Formula and all the players to win a trophy but they haven't delivered.

"We played better" is the biggest loser mentality ever. You have Brazilians having mental struggles, motivating themselves, apologizing & promising to improve way more... but you have English media, players & coaches saying "we played better". So did Brazil but they're all looking to improve & prevent that loss from happening again. English media/pundits are not looking at ways to prevent a loss again.

Brazil haven't won the World Cup for 24 (by 2026) years. It isn't easy to win. Brazilians can say what they want as that's easy to say things, but to prove it is different. Brazil were bigger favourites than England and bottled it. France were favourites before this tournament and previous WC winners. There's no god given right to win a cup.

@@Enigmatized13 They've gone through a comparative dry spell before though. Difference is Brazil have won five World Cups not just one. England is on the level of Belgium quite frankly. The Netherlands also have fallen at the final hurdle three times but even they have typically gone further than England have in recent memory. Point is all the difficulties England face have also been faced by winning nations like Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy and so on but the difference is those countries then typically go on to win next time. Germany has won 4 World cups and been in as many finals, sure they lose and they've even gone out in the groups but then they come back and win. England just goes out in the QFs or groups and never goes out and actually wins something. Which is fine if England fans and media accept they are not in the top nations of the world and even below nations such as Croatia in terms of recent performance. That doesn't mean England are bad, they just aren't on the level of the top teams and until they can prove that they are by actually winning they won't ever be. This is what I don't get about the English mentality, they focus more on finding someone to blame or acting persecuted than wanting to win, who cares what the rest of the world thinks? They don't care much about England but surely English fans want England to actually win something and put their money where their mouth is for once. It's all well and good to talk about potential and luck, many countries have potential and good or bad luck but the truly great sides go out and win, even if they have to fail several times before they succeed. England fail and fail again then say it's progress and go on to fail again.

I remember when McClaren was manager of my team Boro. I remember us finishing 7th in the premier league, winning our first trophy, getting to a European final, and I also remember how much McClaren was hated by the Boro fans because they wanted MORE. Well, look at us now. Seriously, England fans, be very, very careful what you wish for. This might well be as good as it gets, and many of us remember how dark it was and for how long before Southgate. I think there is a good chance that England fans look back on their treatment with deep regret, because I think Southgate might well be a one-off jewel for us, and we won't know what we had until it is gone.

Danny was a pro, so good for him, but he can't see the bigger picture. Italy, Spain, Germany and France are all comparable to us in terms of football infrastructure and the size of the talent pool. Yet they win things and we don't. It's not acceptable.

@@aVerySillyBilly This is my point. I'd actually say that Italy's talent pool is lower than ours on a national basis. Yet Italy won WC 2006, got to a Euro final in 2012 and won Euro 2020. They're able to pull the trigger. England can't.

If this England team was from South America, would have never qualified for a world cup, Sky sport's journalist and pundits will continue to make noise on air when they beat Hungary, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Norway and tell Gary what to do in terms of tactics, forgetting that most of them failed to do the same in their playing days.. The major problems with English football are, 1. noise 2. winning the game before playing it 3. pundits 4. criticism of foreign organisations by their major media outlets. When Gianni Infantino said "we must apologise for the slave trade before criticising" there I knew it's not coming home

My criticism of Southgate is not his choice of 26 man squad or necessarily his starting line up it is his lack of ability to make changes when it matters . Yes England were on top but they lacked cutting edge ie pace. Sterling decision was strange choice when he was away for 5 days . England set up works for maguire as he given better protection and he has never let England down nor has sterling so his decision squad wise was fine to me . His formation once again is down to him and I did not have problem with it . I like the fact he did become less defensive by his formation . I just think he found out when it really matters .

Yea exactly the issue...Maguire is always compensated...At the detriment of the wider team...to have more free flowing...limitless football. Its the reason Erik Ten Haag doesn't want Maguire. Compensating a weaker player by throwing two defensive midfielders with not much creativity like Henderson and Phillips was his tactic in the Euros...and the Euros really was England's for the taking.

Harry maguire wasn’t superb though, he had a bad game against USA , the best argument is he held his own against lesser opposition, both stones and Magguire actually ignored the goal scorer twice in 30 seconds that kicked them out

Actually we do have the best players in the world currently and people need to wake up and see it. Our attacking midfielders and wingbacks in particular are incredible. It’s a shame chillwell and james were injured. Trent before this season was probably the best RB in the world and Kane has been world class for many seasons. This team is better than the so called “golden era” - it’s much more technically gifted. It’s time for ppl to expect us to win again

Just because a player is popular and plays in the premier league doesn’t make him the best in the world. That’s something English fans need to realise. If you are the best how come you always get found out every time you play a nation with similar quality. England have never been prolific in the national stage and won nothing for 70 years. Overpriced players in premier league doesn’t make them the best. The jig is up

@@KD-yb4xu what’s 70 years got to do with the current crop of players? I’m talking about skill. We have the ability to control the game against France but the manager isn’t bold enough to win and tactically is inept, making poor substitutions and not being proactive enough to win a game.

Southgate has a 16.7% win rate vs FIFA top 10 ranked teams (played 24 game with 4 wins) over his tenure as England manager, it's literally the story of his tenure, beat the teams we should be beating and then bottle it against actual opposition. Why do people accept mediocrity, we are never winning anything under Southgate, if he were sacked tomorrow he wouldn't get a championship job so why is he managing England???

Danny Mills talks about old England teams…and uses them to compare to the current team. You can’t do that as squads and generations differ. He’s such a fool. Agree progression isn’t measured in the trophies won but his arguments are contradictory. Take Kane and Pickford out of the XI, every other player in that team has had experience winning big trophies and competing at the top level, to talk about Croatia having a better side than England is foolish

England is the "Vitas Gerulaitis" of Football. He was a tennis player perennially ranked #4 and had a stellar record against players under him, but rarely beat the three above him. His record against Borg was 0 & 17, against Connors 5 & 18, and against McEnroe 3 & 11.
