Excellent Video! I have been looking at automated annealing machines (Bench Source, Giraud, Annealeez, & even Annealing Made Perfect). Your video helped me make up my mind. I feel the Bench Source quality offsets the need to manually feed it. I like your easy-going style and appreciate your thoroughness.

You're welcome. It was my intent to tell about the machine, not the annealing process. I made it after I was frustrated with the videos about the Bench Source machine - not enough information, too short, shaky camera work, focus on annealing, etc.

The instructions for this machine explains how to set the wheel on the spindle so that when the cartridge rotates on the plate it stays at or as close to center as possible. It gives a good explanation of how to counter if the case moves left to right or right to left. It's a quick and easy adjustment. You can almost zero the runout in about three small adjustments. Although not critical to achieve zero runout, it is important to get as close as you can with the naked eye. You definitely don't want the cartridge floating from one side of the slot to the other during rotation in the heating process. If your torch tips are positioned correctly ( the tip of the flame cone slightly contacting your cartridge neck ) the hottest and most concentrated point of heat in the flame is located here. If any of you have ever used an acetylene cutting torch you already know this. If your cartridge runout during rotation is too much, one point of the neck will always be in this heat column while the other is always away from it. It may not seem like much, but it will soften one side of the neck more than the other. This uneven heat will make the neck on one side more malleable vs the other and will increase the opportunity for the neck to split during expansion. The neck will not be able to stretch evenly throughout it's circumference. This is most important on larger magnum cases. Especially overbore cases with thick neck walls as the malleable state of the metal from one side of the neck to the other is accelerated due to the thickness. I do particularly like this machine due to the dual torch heads. This achieves desired temperature faster in the metal than that of the single torch head models. But, at a cost of about $200 - $300 more, so if you're on a budget you can take this in to consideration. There are pros and cons to both. I'm not particularly pleased with having to hand stack each cartridge individually as the machine rotates for the entire operation of the process. If you're like me and do 500 - 1000 cartridges per batch, this can be tedious. Other single torch head models have "hoppers" that will hold 50+ cartridges at a time and you can add additional cartridges faster not having to wait the 2 - 3 seconds between rotation shift each time. This machine is well built and has a lifetime warranty on it too.

Although a late reply as I just found this video, try Tejas Smokers. They have adapters and such up the yahoo. They even have a Vernier type gas regulator that fines tunes your gas so you don't have to keep messing with it once you get it dialed in.

Great review! I wish I had done a little more research before (on the advice of my shooting partner) I bought an Annealeez. The Annealeez is...OK, just OK. One issue with it is it's way too easy to get a case a little toward the upper side of a good anneal and then subsequently get the lower hard rubber wheel too hot when you run more than 2 or 3 cases. It melts the lower wheel a bit and leaves that goo on your case. Can't wait to get one of these Bench Source Vertex's

Rex Roach , I started working on this concept 4 years ago wanting something to meet or beat 22 WMR due to its high price. My short 223RMAC has been tested through development and can supersede 3000 fps with best accuracy around 2750 fps with a 40 gr bullet. It is based on 9MM case and .224 bullet. Lots of work but the satisfaction of shooting it in a rifle and testing for affect on small varmints has been rewarding. Trying to get custom AR barrels made and custom mags. One challenge at a time. It is a small hand grenade against ground squirrels.
@RexRoach6 жыл бұрын
What an interesting combination. With lots of 9mm AR platforms available, it makes great sense to combine the 9mm case and .224 bullet. I hope this succeeds beyond your wildest dreams.

Great video from you as always, Rex! I like how you explained the 20 lb propane tank setup. I've been using this machine since its introduction and it works great. I still use the extension hoses to the small 16 oz propane canisters to keep the weight off of the torch clamp.
@RexRoach8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, they had those extension hoses at Home Depot for about $30 for two. The custom hose kit and "Y" adaptor cost twice that, but I really like using the 20 lb. tank.

Thanks Rex for all your fine videos. As a new reloader, your guidance has been invaluable. . I have followed your lead with the Forster press and am seriously considering the Bench Source Vertex as well. Shorter dwell times seem to be preferrable. Do routinely perform outside neck turning prior to annealing? If so which neck turning device do you prefer? any thoughts on the use of a low pressure regulator on the propane source to increase control of flow/pressure? Share your affection for the incomparable Colt Python. Thanks again
@RexRoach7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, George for the kind words. I tried outside neck turning 35 years ago and came to the conclusion that it did nothing for my accuracy and added a ton of extra work. I still believe that unless you have a tight neck chamber as in a bench rest rifle, outside neck turning is a waste of time. When I did do it, I was using the Forster case trimmer and the outside neck turning device made for it. If I were to outside neck turn today, I'd use some of the tools from Sinclair most likely. I suppose I consider a pressure regulator on my propane setup in the same category as outside neck turning. It might help, but I probably wouldn't notice the difference. But I'm certainly not knocking either one. I took a couple of young men and their grandfather shooting recently and they went wild over the Python. Being from Delaware, they had grown up with guns pretty much unavailable, so it was their first time shooting. I started them out with some light .38 SPL wadcutters and before long they were shooting the real stuff and grinning from ear to ear. It was getting late in the day when we were finishing up and one of them took an iPhone pix of the other and caught the exact moment of ignition. Flame was shooting out the barrel/cylinder gap and made for a most dramatic photo. I suspect it's computer wallpaper for them now.

Split-er about $20.00, hoses (2) 10.00, 2 adapters about $8.00 each... $55.00 ish --- buys 11 small bottles... TIA RJ

I have been looking at this machine for as long as I can remember. This is a nice machine and it's the one that I want to get, but I am going to try something else first. Salt Bath Annealing. Just because I want to see how that process works out. I've seen others use the 20lb propane tank application for case annealer's as well. Did you have that hose special made from your propane guy? I wonder if that is an off the shelf item? Thanks for the vid and I will follow the link to watch the case annealing video. Thanks!

Yes, the local propane store made that Y assembly for me. Use standard BBQ 20 lb bottles from Home Depot, corner gas station, Winn-Dixie, etc. look at my new video on .223 Dillon 1050 loading for lots of in-use video of the annealer.

Geneva wheel? Did you make that up?
@RexRoach8 жыл бұрын
In the strictest sense, this is not a classic Geneva mechanism because traditionally the "pause" portion would have a round portion of the driver engaged into a circular cutout on the wheel. But it's closer to a Geneva wheel than most any other mechanism. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_drive The fact that you and I are both from a small town called Geneva is a coincidence.

Rex...do you think this will work with tall shells like 45-120 3 1/4"
@RexRoach7 жыл бұрын
I think so and without any problem. There is a lot more height available on the mounting posts. Not only that, but it tends to work best when the flame is titled slightly upward. Overall, the adjustment range is huge.

Why not mapp gas?
@RexRoach3 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could. At Home Depot a bottle of MAPP is $14 vs $3.50 for the same bottle of LP. It takes less than 3 seconds to anneal a case with my LP setup, and I can barely keep up with that, so I'm not looking to go faster. But if you have it, go for it. For big cases it might be worth the extra gas cost in time saved. I don't know if it would be more difficult to "tune in" the right speed setting, but probably not with the big cases. Interesting question. Thanks.
