It's a bit like stepping into a role as a GM for a tabletop game. You know it's just you and four friends sitting around a table with some dice, but what you're hoping for is enough buy-in to the fantasy that when you pretend to be a gargantuan elder wyrm, the players are genuinely frightened. If you sell it well enough, the players will, in their heads, picture the hundred foot long ancient beast toying with their characters before it tries to eat them, instead of just picturing you making faces at them. Cumberbatch is basically asking the production crew to imagine the Smaug he's portraying, and pretend they can see the wings and tail and firey breath. In that regard, I think it helps, the more animated and into it he can be.

i cant believe this it's breathtaking, i can't believe that anyone can say he is a bad actor. He transforms in the space of a few seconds from a goofball to a sociopath to a code-breaking mathematician, and the way he shows his character through body movements and puts so much passion into a voice role even when he doesn't have to, it's incredible. I'm inspired.

7:47 - he became Smaug so much that he started drooling while delivering his epic villain speech. It's great - this wasn't even acting. This was literal embodiment of the character, of Smaug. Cumberbatch actually became Smaug in these scenes. He was Smaug. Awesome stuff

I'm an amateur theater player and I learned a lot about acting. And Benedict's acting impresses me so much. He completely _becomes_ the dragon. The more far the character of the role is away from you own character, the harder it is to play it, obviously. And a human playing a dragon, which is a completely different creature... He does it sooo well.

If he just stood behind a screen, we wouldnt of got the performance we did. Just like Mark Hamill does his voice acting, he gets into it. Be the character. You may look like a derp. But you sell the character 110%.

Tolkien definitely subverted expectations with Smaug's death. Smaug is brought down by his pride quite quickly by Bard, but that's not where it ends. The last part of the book isn't about fighting a dragon but greed. It's about how our greed can tempt or destroy us.
