I bought this Primus No. 96 at a car boot sale for £5. It was in a bit of a state but I got it working!
This stove has a date code of R which means it was made in 1927 and is 94 years old!

That was very entertaining, you are correct, an old device retaining its weathered look does have a charm about it. Many restoration videos show battered devices transformed into new condition, very impressive but often the natural used appearance is preferred. Enjoyed the Wessex Mount Vesuvius display too 😎

Cheers Geoff. The trick is to keep calm, and in this case let off the pressure and wait a bit longer. Still, makes an interesting thumbnail.

Same here, although brass can always patina over time so I just polish it to remove unwanted gunk that's stuck over years

Thanks for sharing. I had a good giggle when the stove started flaming. I bought a nickel silent burner Primus from a closing down sale a while back, some young people in the house were fascinated by this unit. They had never seen such a contraption before. I cleaned it and then attempted to fire it up, all went well with a beautiful clean blue flame, suddenly there was this massive yellow flame shooting up. they all ran out of the house in terror, it was quite a funny moment. As you say remain calm and depressurize the unit it won't blow up. Still need to figure out why its doing this, possibly needs a new jet. Love these old stoves, they way better than that horrendous Panda stove rubbish that uses a wick, gives an efficiency of below 40 %, burn badly and blacken the pot, and are known to blow up in peoples faces. The older generation were clever.

Leaving bits like that in is what makes KZfaq videos worth watching! All that causes it is the jet becoming partially blocked. Just buy a pricker and give it a good clean. Many thanks for watching, please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!

....In today's episode, Ben sets fire to his shed!!!!!...... I really like that one Ben, want one - had a quick look on ebay, guess I'll wait until I see one at a boot market/antiques fair or whatever!!! Lovely stove and a great design all fitting in the tin.
@BensWorkshop
@BensWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
It is quite a design and really compact too. Only fits in the tin if you follow the instructions carefully. Also an unusual burner and riser. Somewhere I have an Optimus 96 but it has the normal style of burner though I don't know if that was original to the Optimus. This one was a bargain for a fiver though!
@GrumpyTim

@@BensWorkshop Yeah, your fiver bargain was a REAL bargain. I like the fact that it only fits in the tin if you follow the instructions, it adds to the charm - or frustration if you don't have the instructions!!!!

The trick is not to panic. Not sure a fire blanket would help too much as you would have hot paraffin leaking if you jut chucked on on top. Trick to remember is that yo can always let the pressure out, so make sure you have pliers or similar available if it comes to it. Can also help to try it outside first which I did not do this time, Many thanks for watching, I am pleased you enjoyed it! Please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!

They are handy if the power goes out. I have Tilley lamps as well. If yours is a Primus (rather than a British made one) it will have a date code on the bottom which will tell you what year it was made (unless it is a fairly late one). Thanks for watching and don't forget to hit like.

there is no safety technology!.. you definitely should not be given such things in your hands)) you didn't even warm it up properly before launching. give this primus in safe hands, it is clearly not for you. the nozzle needs to be replaced with a new one, it has too large a hole for normal operation. the flame is smoky. or the nozzle is heavily clogged. it needs major repairs

What? It was "given to me", I bought it. It was made in 1927, before stupid people turned up to find ever new ways to hurt themselves. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. On a serious note, don't play with anything more dangerous that a toothbrush, it wouldn't be safe. Definitely not a kitchen knife, they have no "safety technology" in them either.
