Soap & Clay

Soap & Clay

4 жыл бұрын

Today on 365 Days of Soap we are testing five clays and their performance in cold process soap! We talk about the benefits of different clays, their usage rate in soap, how to incorporate them, and why clays are just the coolest. We test for lather performance and bar hardness.
Important to note: this test was performed on 12 hour old soap - meaning the bars were all super fresh and as such have not settled into their final big lather place, which really happens after soap has lost all of its water weight, a process known as “curing.” As such, the lather is not as big and awesome as you will see in a fully cured bar, but the fresh bars yield such a cool lather right off of the bat that you get a decent idea of how each clay impacts the lather qualities of a soap. We will test these bars again in a few weeks and compare, so subscribe to the channel and don’t miss the second test!
For more information on clay soaps, subscribe to the channel! We load our soapy antics daily and spend a lot of time talking about process, techniques, and tips and tricks Mrs Soap & Clay has picked up along the way.

I've been making soap for around 30 years. I try to keep my recipes simple. More natural. I don't add the fragrances at all. But i use natural scents like orange zest, spearmint leaves, things like that. The clay soaps i love using the most. You can feel the drag on your skin while using them. That's the micro exfoliating properties. But to make better scrubbers out of them i have been adding in about a cup of coconut flour. It makes the soap like a sponge too. And people love them. My basic recipe is 2 parts olive oil the normal yellow stuff not the green extra virgin stuff. To 1 part Coconut oil. I don't add the clays until right before trace while its still spins really well. I do add a little extra water to account for the clay absorption but its mixed in prior with the Lye solution. I have to add double the amount for the bentonite because it does love more water. I use a kitchenaid industrial hand mixer and it destroys clumps in a just a few seconds. The coconut flour also goes in at the same time as the clay powder. People also like the oatmeal flour in the soaps i make. I get a ton or requests for it. I have yet to try making the activated charcoal soap though. Maybe when i spin up my new batches I'll try making it.

I started adding kaolin clay to my citrus essential oil soap to anchor the scent. It made such a big difference to the creaminess of the lather that I now add kaolin to all my soaps. Love it!

I love your channel and have been binge watching! Your so informative and easy to watch! I agree with the clay, I use white kaolin in all of my bars and occasionally use just a bit of the bentonite as it can definitely be drying. I have the red clay, but haven’t used it yet, I would love to try the Dead Sea clay in the near future. I love how you demoed the bubbling and foaming of each.

I like the red clay soap. I like how it is good for sensitive skin. I am just starting out. I have made cakes, cookies and other desserts so have the skills to measure and follow instructions. I like plant based, free from man-made chemicals skincare and bathroom products as I have had issues with my skin as I am getting older and my daughter has suffered with eczema most of her life. I also am currently unemployed and so I thought, why not make natural soap and start small and sell online after making a batch, getting the formula tested and make batches when certified. I have just discovered your video so look forward to watching more.

I've finally ventured into soap land and I'm using m&p to do face bars. Almost all of my bars have some sort of clay or natural ingredient added to them. The lather is soooo good and the bubbles are actually softer than any artisan soap I've purchased. Once I get the hang of cp I'll probably use clays in that soap too!

Hey from Canada! i agree . . . i use clay in some of my soaps and find my skin is more glowing and i look healthier. Clays also draw toxins out of our bodies. i make a "REMEDY" soap and am now considering adding a bit of clay to it. my "REMEDY" soap is for the month of November and helps fight viruses, mainly colds. Yet i need a honey /golden /warm brown clay or a clay that hardens to one of these colours because my November soap contains honey and i do not want to ruin the colour with grey or too dark of a brown. Red clay is great for removing toxins, right? What about Volcanic clay? Does it remove toxins? i use Green Volcanic Clay from British Columbia in my "RELIEVE" soap for summer and it helps soothe sunburns. Cheers from SOAP EVOLUTION, Edmonton City, Canada. i have been formulating soaps for almost 5 years and have not sold any yet! This video really helped because i refuse to use artificial dyes.

Newbie to soaping here and planning to test out my clays also. Does the added water to each clay affect the lye concentration? Or does the clay take care of the added water? I’m not sure how to discount my water if i’m adding more than a T of water for each bar of soap 😅
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
Very good question! I tend to soap most of my soaps at 2.4x lye for the water as the clay does soak up some of the water - more for the bentonite, etc. Honestly though water is such an arbitrary thing in soapmaking that you really don’t NEED to spend much time worrying about how to change your water calculations when adding clay.

I just did a French pink soap and it’s beautiful but it’s really soft and almost wet when I unmolded it. And I waited almost 24 hours when I unmolded it. I do a decent water discount but I did forget to add my sodium lactate. However I usually don’t need to add sodium lactate because I do a large water discount so my bard can be unmold them at 12-16 hrs. But it was so soft at least I thought so and it cut like butter and I normally cure for 3-4 weeks. But I think this clay soap will need to cure for a full 6-8 week’s. I didn’t expect it to be so soft. It that normal?
@MrsSoapAndClay

I have a clay line, but it's not in all my soaps. I milk goats, so some kind of milk is in all my soaps, including my clay soaps. I liked the red clay soap best, it had the best lather and I loved the color. It was fascinating to see the way each clay worked in the soap. I've never paid that closee attention before. My clay soap lathers huge because it also has milk and castor oil in it. Because of those ingredients plus the clay I get tons of bubbles that last a long time. Hi! Thanks for watching! So I have been making exclusively clay soaps for years and years, and I do so after having an awesome conversation with one of my chemistry professor buddies as we were running tests. In my tests, I have found that 1tbsp per pound or whatever the “standard” is doesn’t do much to the bar. As such, I use significantly more per batch than the recommendation to achieve a good clay soap. You can do whatever you’d like - play with the ratios and see how far you can push the limits! :) Happy soaping!

Do you only use distilled water to make your soaps? I live in a hardwater area and we double filter our water but sometimes we get tiny amounts of limescale. 😬

Hi! So I do use distilled water for soapmaking, but it’s not necessary. Plenty of people use tap. I like to control all variables possible in Soapmaking though, and water is one that can change based on what the treatment plant puts in the water at any given time. :)

@@MrsSoapAndClay Hi, Yes, I am a newbie to the soaping world but eager to learn and want to get it right. I am writing out ingredients to start to create a recipe and have discovered soapcalc.net. A website that calculates the ingredients. Have you used this website? 😊

You will have better results using distilled water vs hard water. It's inexpensive compared to a less than desirable result. My 2 cents.

@@trevorallen2274 Thanks Trevor, I thought that might have been the case. I bought distilled water and have made one loaf of soap but it turned out quite hard as it had a lot of olive oil and the scent, Pink Grapefruit essential oil, has faded. I did add Kaolin clay, but probably not enough to hold in the scent. I have looked into what else to add, and the suggestions are cornflour, arrowroot powder, clay and orris root powder. I have a six bar mould to experiment with next so will separate the soap batter into separate plastic jugs or containers and add the suggestions to each to see which one holds essential oil scent the best.

@@jenniferbarber5815 High olive oil content soaps can get quite hard despite what lye calculators say. Citrus essential oils really don't stick around long in my experience. Hint. Once the bar is fairly cured...a week or so, store it in the freezer. It will be nice and fresh when you need it. Citrus fragrance oils behave much better if your not adverse to using fragrance oils. Happy soaping!

For a more moisturising soap, what would you use instead of coconut oil as I have heard it can be drying. 😊
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
It has a high cleansing number, for sure! I tend to lean toward balanced recipes to offset that while maintaining the awesome bubbles that come from coconut. Also, since you’re newer in the soaping world and may not have heard - try a 100% coconut oil with a 20% superfat. Big beautiful bubble and not drying. It’s crazy! :)

new soaper here, how much clay do you use in a 1000g oil batch soap recipe. I don't see usage rates discussed here.
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
A lot! 😂 I think I’ve only discussed specifically how much I personally use a few times in unrelated videos, kinda snuck in. The level varies and you can go much, MUCH higher than the traditional “1 tablespoon per pound of oils” recommendation. Have fun!

Thanks for watching! I’m pretty sure I just put out a new clay test video in the last week or so (daily content runs together these days, so it may be a bit farther back) explaining more about the clays and their benefits! If you’re interested in the clay stuff, check that one out! Unless I haven’t put it up yet. In which case, wait for it...? 😂😬
