We review th Benelli Leoncino Trail.
This attractive bike comes with the 500cc stroke engine with 48 bhp (48 CV (35 kW) at 8500 rpm) and 45Nm (4,6 kgm) of torque. What does that mean for every day riding? We find out.
This A2 licence compatible motorcycle is a real stunner!
We ride it on the road and on the trail. Priced at £5499 on the road in the UK, this about average in price for bikes of this kind.
The twin cylinder 500cc motor has a nice exhaust tone, and with aftermarket pipes, this would be awesome!
The dimensions are:
LENGTH 2100mm
WIDTH 800mm
HEIGHT 1160mm
GROUND CLEARANCE 185mm
UNLADEN WEIGHT 170kg
FUEL CAPACITY 15 Ltr
RESERVE 3 Ltr
WHEELBASE 1450mm
SEAT HEIGHT 815mm
Please let us know what you think of the Benelli; we'd love to hear your comments.

Being an owner of the street version of the leoncino I have have to say I've found it great as my first 'big' bike. Power delivery is nice and smooth and being about 5ft11 I find the riding position comfortable. I have commuted on it, normally using the lanes and it is brilliant. It also sounds much better without that huge cat box which is just for sound deadening. The parts backup unfortunately is appalling, took months to get a small part even with the shop calling the importers pretty much every week to find out where the part was

I'd throw a skid, minimalist handguards, and legal knobs on one of these. They look pretty good in person too. At 5'8"/30" inseam, it seems to fit me well. 'Much lighter than the Triumph Scrambler 900. About similar weight and power as my DR650s.

Thanks for another great review 👍 I think that this reviewed bike is especially interesting for younger people, aged 18-20 years. Not too much power, light, nimble. I like the look / the pattern of the seat, reminds me of bikes of the 70s and 80s. There is only one problem for the younger people: The "small lion" is not really cheap; here in germany you have to pay approx 6,5 K € for it. And it is definetely not suitable for small people with short legs

As you remarked, very short gearing. I recall a two stroke Suzuki T500 I had in 1975, which made about the same BHP but did 80 MPH at 5,000 RPM. Also, 360 degree parallel twins seem to be a dying breed nowadays, which makes this bike quite unusual.

I own the regular Leoncino. It is a peach to ride. However, the seat triangle is not ideal for me. I will create a completely straight seat with a gel inlay. This will add about 5 cm and make it a bit harder (after 45 minutes, I have the impression sitting on the plastic). Mine was in the dealer's shop twice. The display did not work properly. No ABS, fuel and speed indication and tripmeter did not work. First time they repaired everything execpt for the fuel indicator, although I told them. After the second visit, all is good. Am very happy with the little lion, but not the dealer.

I like this bike and I think it has a better engine then the new CB500X … I recon you could prolly fit the TRK502 exhaust onto it (with some pipe work) and make it lighter and more dirt worthy … id also jack it up an inch or two with a suspension upgrade … and that lump in the seat needs to go … plus make a tail tidy to give it a better aesthetic length on the back and lose 2 or 3 kilos by dropping that rego bar on its back wheel.

Another good review guys thanks 🛵 Surprised they allow the emblem on the front mud after all they did outlawed the pedestrian slicer years ago. If it’s reliable it’s a decent little bike for the price I’d personally change out the front guard for a decent one but imho it’s a adventuriish style bike and not really a bike for green lane-ing I’m 6’1” so a tad short for me in the seat to bar ratio

Just discovered you guys by looking for a review on this bike. Thanks for your review. I sat on one in the shop a few days ago but I don't think the salesperson was really listening to what I needed. I am looking for a bike to go a bit off road here in Australia (I want to travel around the country) on quite a bit of normal roads but also take it on unmade outback roads like the Birdsville track which has gibbers on it. I have a feeling after your review that this is probably not the right bike. I am also looking at a GS650, V-Strom or similar. What would you recommend? Are these bikes ok on normal road too? Curious as to what you would recommend. Cheers.

Compared to what? Consider HP/L for engine output, curb weight of the bike, rider weight, aerodynamics, and gearing. Honda was making 100HP/L, naturally-aspirated, with their 450 twins back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Modern 600cc 4cyl sport bikes make 200HP+/L, NA. Conversely, Triumph Scrambler 900 p-twin and most Harley v-twins make less than 100HP/L, and those bikes are typically over 500lb curb.

I dunno, as someone who has converted 3 different “street only” bikes into dual sports I think this bike has a lot of potential! with the right tires and a few low cost mods I bet I could do quite well off road on this! I simply cannot force myself to be attracted to dirt bikes and feel silly riding them on the street. This seems much more what I’m looking for!

Two different bike genres with different uses. Although this is a trail version the Leoncino is more towards road, laid back straight body position rides. The RC 390 is built for speed as a racer.

This is NOT a cafe-style bike. It's a scrambler. Cafe bikes use clip-ons and street tires. Scramblers are street bikes that are built to be able to also ride off-pavement. The Leoncino has cast wheels, street tires, and no skid. The Leoncino Trail has spoked wheels, a skid, more travel/clearance than most street standards, and dualsport tires. The former is a street standard that can be "cafe-styled" with clip-on bars, rearset pegs and foot-levers, and a windscreen. The latter can easily fit knobbies and take a rip down a beach A lot of scramblers also have higher exhausts than the street bikes they are typically based on. Compare the Triumph Scrambler, Bonneville, and Thruxton...or the Honda CB450 and CL450.

6'1" is considerably tall in most countries. Even in Holland, it's above average. Try a Triumph Scrambler 1200, a Ducati Desert Sled, the Leoncino 800, or a Husky Svartpilen. If you prefer the 500 Leoncino Trail, you could try a lifted suspension, taller seat, lowered pegs, pivoting bar-risers, and taller bars. Many people customize their moto ergonomics.
