Thank you for taking the time in making this brief video, you are the only British journalist to bother making a KZfaq video on the African Twin Adventure Sport. 👍 There seems to absolutely loads of videos on this bike, but yours as far as I know, is the only English speaking one. British motorcycle journalists just don’t seem care, I guess they can’t be bothered! 😔

Lots of people are quick to mention all of the "added weight" from the larger fuel tank. It's like a duffle bag, the weight depends of how much I fill it up. So, if its a 6 gallon tank and I decide to put 4 gallons in it then it's really not that much more weight now is it. I have the option of filling it up all the way if I need more range (this is common sense). I just don't see how it can feel more heavy with a larger tank if it has the same amount of fuel in it. Sure there is a pound or so more material from the tank being bigger but come on. Just like when I used to drag race, I didn't fill the tank cause of the weight. Also, the battery is lighter in the 2018. Why are there so many negative comments about the tank size and weight?
@ZoranJager
@ZoranJager 6 жыл бұрын
The "added weight" is rubbish :) The easiest way to make your bike lighter is not to unload the bike itself, but the rider instead! I have lost 11kg recently, and plan to lose another 10 before the new season starts.

In my opinion is not about the negative opinion, is about making sence. The bike is dual sport with more dirt orientated. Now, the bike is taller with a bigger tank, ok you say that extra weight can be managed, but making it taller makes it special for taller people when it comes to hadle it in the dirt. This is not a motocross bike that height does not matter. May be I am wrong, I am talking out of my experience. I think the regular Africa Twin has a good height, the extra clearance from the ground should had been optional, making it accessible to everyone.
@chrisredfield3240

If the rider looses weight because the bike is heavy, Now the little guy has even less control over the bike. If you have extra weight to loose that's got nothing to do with the bike. I have no weight to loose i'm actually trying to gain weight so i have more strength to manage the weight.

The seat height is adjustable on the Africa Twins. 920 mm is high position. The low position is 900 mm. Which is still waaay too tall for most of the riders. Adventure Sports is only 2 cm taller in the suspensions and ground clearance than than standard version Africa Twin, but seat height is a whole 5 cm taller, which is stupid.

Nice review :) You wrote: "revised and longer travel suspension with new compression and rebound settings, which are still adjustable. For me this is the most important upgrade over the 2015 Africa Twin because of its quality with a classy, plush not-to-soft feel particularly at the front via the 45mm Showa USD forks". That caught my attention ! I ride a 1190R but love the looks of the new AT Adv Sports and it's simplicity. I ride light off road but 90% of the time two up with luggage, so kind of concerned about the reviews of the AT standard where the words "under sprung" and "under dampened" arise from time to time. Can you comment a bit more about the new suspension? Thanks!

Some of us live off the pavement, and need to cover serious miles out in the middle of nowhere. The bigger tank of the Adventure Sports seals the deal for me. Hard to find a real ADV bike that isn’t a whale (looking at you, R1200GS), but has the ergonomics/comfort/range to cover decent distances, and still be light/compact enough to be reasonably decent off-road. The new AT Adv Sports seems to strike a very happy balance.

Also a lot of people don't start off-roading at the end of their driveway, a lot of people have to travel some distance before the off-road begins. This is not a motorcross bike, its a rally touring bike.

Denis Calvert: Since the introduction of PCP to the market, whereby you don’t finance the full cost of the bike, manufacturers appear to have gone crazy with pricing; and for the vast majority of us, it’s just a weekend hobby. Manufacturers will eventually price themselves out of most people’s budgets; which is one reason, the ‘bike shed’ scene is taking off. And let’s be honest, you don’t need massive power to have fun.

How is the suspension? Reason I ask is that the suspension in the 2016 version is absolute shit. I replaced the springs front and back a year ago due to constant bottoming out and am about to do it all over again this time addressing the high rebound issues in the rear. I do ride her hard off-road though.

Really dont know for who this bike is. Honda made it heavier and taller, which does not make any sence for a dual sport bike, orientated more for the dirt, and you say that for a city or daily commute is better the previews regular Africa Twin, then I do not really see where is this going. What about picking it up from a flat ground with that 24.2L tank full? In my opinion it totally contradicts itself.
@chrisredfield3240

Next step make it even taller again and add yet more fuel should be even better. Making the bikes taller and heavier is all they seem to be able to do now, and of course go up by 50cc and gain about 5 hp and add an extra 11kg.

I agree, who cares. The only ones who should actually be caring are the reviewers, because the reviews should take that into account. For example, the 2016 version had really bad tires for the road and MOTTORRAD magazine discovered the front tires were deforming in bends, and at least one guy (KZfaq legend Schaaf) had a very serious accident because of this. A good review would at least advise on stiffening the suspension and putting on better road tires.

I really wish honda would quit re-introducing the HRC 1980s color scheme over and over. I am sick of looking at it. Yeah it was cool in 1988 and an OCCASIONAL throwback is fun, but they've done it over and over on many bikes. I'd like to see something more modern like the dakar bikes color scheme become available (or SOMETHING that someone put some time into, rather than black or silver lol). I also wish they used dirtbike plastics instead of egg shell crotch rocket fairings that are $1200 a piece to replace and take 20 minutes to remove. As for the rest of it, they've made it too big now. When my 2016 was bone stock it was perfect off road. I added all the usual stuff: crash bars, skid plate, bark busters, center stand and just the weight of those alone ruined the handling off road. So while I do put around 20,000km on the bike each summer doing long trips, I've found it sits in the corner of my garage untouched almost all year cause I always gravitate to the lighter bikes that sit next to it begging to be ridden. With the ktm 790 and yamaha tenere 700 world raid type bikes coming out I think a lot of africa twins, 1190rs, 1090rs, GSs will get unloaded really quick from guys that are still ridin hard.

How much do you weigh? I am thinking of picking up the older one because this one while very nice is a little taller and a little wider. And i hear what you say about the weight with the required for off road accessories.
@jetmuchacho
@jetmuchacho 6 жыл бұрын
Ron Sexton I am about 175 lbs without gear so I guess I’m just slightly heavier than what the stock suspension in ‘16 was rated for. I added a camel tank to mine which moves the extra 6L to the back instead of the front and helps balance that weight distribution. With this my range is about 400km and I suspect I could get around 500km if I rode really conservatively. The adventure sport has upgraded suspension and the seat height is nearly 2” higher now. If you do a lot of whoops this would be important, but I was actually surprised how good the suspension was on mine considering you’d think it was less capable than a scooter the way people talk about it on the internet. The ground clearance is more than enough, even on gnarly rocky trails you’ll find the skid plate well out of harms way unless you blunder up over the center of the biggest rocks. The thing is on an adventure bike like this where you want to take it into challenging places, it’s the size and weight that kills it. It was one of the main reasons I went with the Africa twin rather than the ktm 1190r, it was so much easier to manage all the weight in the trails when you can actually touch the ground with your feet when you come to a stop, especially unexpectedly. If Honda had come out with the 2018 AT AS model and it was 50lbs lighter and had 20 more hp, I’d feel a little left behind and I’d probably seriously consider trading in even though I’ve spent so much time dialing this one in. But they didn’t, so I do not! I’m perfectly happy with my base model and I’m sure you could be too depending on your needs or at least your tolerance for girth on your off road bike. This coming from a guy who rides trials, enduro, and mx. So of course everyone’s mileage may vary.

I'm 6'1" and about 200 (a little fat!). I'm thinking between this and the KLR 650. I'm also going on 63. So i am thinking that DCT might be a good idea! Mainly thinking about desert back roads around and near Las Vegas (not there yet). There are some good deals on the 2017 AT's. Probably because the 2018 top AT model is so upgraded and rumored to be only $2,000 more for improved and outfitted with gear. But for my purposes it probably doesn't matter to me. But the extra weight and width and height and cost do matter to me. Maybe more than the many improvements. As for the KLR, the cost difference really isn't that great and the AT tech and modern features are very tempting. At my age i don't believe i will be doing jumps and severe off road. More rocky dirty roads at most more likely. I just want to get out and see some scenery! That seat on a new KLR is pretty nice though and the seat height is within reach and a lot cheaper. That Camo looks pretty cool also.

Yeah, I feel like Honda is always too boring/conservative when it comes to power on their bikes. They could have easily squeezed a few more ponies or lbs of torque out of that parallel twin to make things more interesting on the road where most of these bikes live.

Evan Whitehead they sacrificed some power for better reliability. 94hp does the job 99% of the time. At the end of the day, it's an offroad biased bike and if used as intended, the power it makes is more than adequate.

Honestly you don't need more than 100hp, particularly on an ADV bike. I got into plenty of trouble with an 80hp 2-valve Ducati. 94 HP and enough fuel range I can actually ride and not be at a gas station all the time? Yes please. This bike hits the nail on the head for someone who doesn't need HP to compensate for anything, and actually uses the bike in a rural, Outback-type landscape, on and off road. Combined with Honda quality engineering, this thing looks like a winner to me.
