Had one back in the 90’s . One plus , since the water level is low , it will not overflow if the pump fails or during a power outage. Before it overflows the siphon breaks . Happened to me twice.

I personally like them and have used them on all of my aquariums since the 90's. On tanks as large as 125 gal and as small as 26 gal. I feel like there is simple science behind their effectiveness, and they're not very difficult or expensive to make. I like to put mechanical filter material right on my overflow downspouts and also on my drip pan. The mechanical filters are very easy to clean with this type of setup and I don't even need to turn off my pumps or divert the water flow to remove them for a few moments and clean them... you make some valid points regarding the negatives though, but imo the real rip off is canister filters. I think those things are complete garbage and a huge pain, lol.

I have a wet dry on a 125g I got it used from someone. I’ve never liked it, but I’d have to revamp the stand or build a new one to support a larger more typical sump. Wet dry sumps to me are like the sponge filter of the power filters.. you just switch out polyfil sheets at the top every week (or when needed) toss and replace and you’re done. The maintenance is incredibly fast and easy. Aside from that, they’re subpar in every other way imo.

King of DIY showed a cheap option for an overhead trickle filter last week. Not very convenient for the most of us due to space etc but they can be done DIY for a good price.

I didn't even use wet/dry filters back when they were all the rage. Just seemed complicated, noisy, ugly, filthy. The filthy part I got over real quick through use of any filter for the most part. Did see Amazon and temu selling a two, three, for box rack system that is essentially a wet/dry. These are fairly cheap and easy to use, but seems the need to be above tank based on design and don't think most will use these other than maybe those who have a dedicated fish room, but certainly not in your living room. Joey just showed his from temu in the past week. Think it was about a hundred bucks before his discounts for coupons. Looked very easy, but still above tank. Could definitely hold crazy amounts of media.

Wet dry shop vac yes, I know those. Wet dry filter...no idea what you are. So I'll definitely learn something today. Probably not something I'll ever use or need knowledge of, but knowledge is power!! 😅🤣✌️

Nice! I've seen a lot of them in videos from the Asian fish keeping community, especially ones that are above the tank.

Canister filter works perfectly fine. I love my E heim , the rolls royce of cannister filters, the biggest one.

im not bashing you but they are great filters and if they werent, they wouldnt have worked for so many years and still work today lol there should be a spot in your title that says " why wet/dry filters suck! in my opinion !" beautiful guppy tank!

It's just a bakki shower, increasing oxygen content and balancing gas saturation level in water, The optimal placement for this is after your bio filter section because a large enough bacteria colony can consume noticeable amount of oxygen, or before the bio filter to increase aerobic capacity of your bio filter, Either way you wouldn't use it as a mechanical filter for either suspended or dissolved solids like the one in your picture example

Not expensive at all, can diy super cheap and easy. Dont need alot of space, can be made in many different sizes. Complains about it being to big then to small..... a wet dry might not be ideal for every situation but certainly a good option for many.

Yeah this just doesn't seem sensible, even as I am likely going to be making ponds/tanks with sumps, I am doing so on 75-300 gallon ponds, so I want these diy builds to be as simple as possible.

Bacteria necessary to maintain a healthy environment are cultivated in oxygenated water. Using this type of filter requires patience. Give it time to grow bacteria. if you want clean clear water, use a wet dry. My African cichlids love theirs.

I use a Sobo top filter. I paid 7 dollars for the filter on the internet. The problems you have this because you have the wrong kind of filter. This filter comes with a pump too so it's very cheap. I have a two bare bottom Aquarium that I never do water change don't have any nitrates and there's no fish poop on the bottom of my tank. All the people that have problems with nitrates are uneducated how to set up an aquarium.

wet dry trickle filters legit do suck, the idea was good back in the day, but for the same footprint a k1 fludized bed is hands down way more surface area and less maintenence. wet drys are old technology and just need to go away. sure, bacteria like the trickle action and more access to oxygen, but there is no legitimate reason i can think of for wet drys to still exist.
