I received the 8” Kraftig today. I love it. Absolutely an amazing product. One day in, I’ve made 4 small fires in my backyard. I know it’s a good product when I put the fire out on purpose just so I can do it again. 😂

Thanks for the great video Tim! I just got mine in today. I have 2 young daughters and they are so eager to learn survival skills with me(I am a beginner too)! We will be starting a few practice fires this weekend for a Valentine’s Day bonfire.

I just got mine and only searched for a video on it because I was so impressed. The scraper works great. I was going to leave most of the protective coating on mine but I guess the correct way is to turn it as you use it to keep it round. Amazing ferro rod -- it really is as easy as he makes it look.
2 жыл бұрын
Feel free to use it however you like. However, I like to remove the protective coating all the way around. That way I don't have to search and rotate my ferro rod around till I find the "correct line" to strike. But to each their own, friend. 🤙

Greetings from a couple hours away in Bigfork Montana, just ordered the 3” hex. i used the spine of my knife to shave some magnesium shavings and the scraper the harbor freight ferro came with its about worthless. but i think ill machine whats left into shavings and save them in a bag. if i order like 100 to include in a bushcrafter knife model is there a discount :p

Thanks, that was helpful. Didn't think mine worked - tried it with the black coating on - didn't know you need to remove it first (novice). If you're storing these rods in an emergency kit and you've removed the coating should you recoat them with something to prevent corrosion before long term storage?
6 жыл бұрын
Glad this helped! And great Q, btw. It just depends on where you'll be, and how the rod will be stored. But, I'd say its probably not a bad idea to re-coat it, if it's gonna be sitting for awhile. You could do anything from sticking it in a ziplock bag, to coating the rod in spray paint... or even wax. Your call. :)

I'd use beeswax. Good coating, as well as a flamable substance.

What's with everyone complaining about his "um"s? I didn't even notice it, and rewatching the video I still don't get it.
4 жыл бұрын
Thnx, Pax! People just like to criticize other people. It's cool. I don't love being on camera (hence the nervous "umms"). However, each time I force myself into discomfort, I get better at whatever I'm sucking at. Life lessons. True learning only comes from doing. People love to waste time focused on other people. I'd rather invest my time -- doing, learning, and trying to be a slightly better version of me than I was yesterday. Appreciate the positivity, Pax. We need more of that! 🤙🏼 - Tim | Founder @ Überleben

Hi Teresa. It's a concave tinder scraper. It'll make aid in processing shavings from a piece of fatwood, or any wood really. Hope that helps! :)
@slydog754 жыл бұрын
@ how about a tutorial on that?!
@Sonomatt4 жыл бұрын
Helpful for beginners for sure. However fat wood and feather sticks are two diff things. Fat wood is highly resinous usually from conifers at the base of a dead limb or within punky decaying trunks. These chunks once carved out can be repeatedly used by scraping off shavings with the back of the blade. Feather sticks however are sticks you’ve shaved thin slivers off while leaving the base attached to create a larger surface area that’s easy to ignite. If that was fatwood in the video , ya chucked it right on there and blew the whole wad ;)
4 жыл бұрын
We took a chunk of fatwood and shaved a little pile off to catch the spark for demo.

Why are people so nasty? It’s a product how to vid for newbies. Not removing the coating is what screws people up. He explains that. The tinder he used.. he explains that. The man knows what he’s doing probably 100 times over. He doesn’t need mansplaining and criticism of a 4 min brief video. It’s not intended to massage the egos of “know it alls”. The bushcraft elite are so exhausting.

Do another video tutorial when it's raining and you don't have fat wood and bone dry tinder, like in the real world.
6 жыл бұрын
Thnx! The purpose of the video was to show new-comers how to use their ferro rods. That said, like most locations in the NW / PNW, this spot in Bonners Ferry was nowhere near bone dry, and we were actually surrounded by fat wood..... assuming you know where to look. Just like in the real world. :)

Whenever I've really needed a fire it was either raining like somebody was pouring a bucket over my head or snowing/hailing with a 40mph wind. It's at these times I would repeat my mantra "I love nature", I love nature...

I didn't know how to properly use this until I saw the video. So I'm thankful for the tutorial. Also, don't be a dick. When you make comments like this, it really just shows us that you're insecure.
@tbar54036 жыл бұрын
I requested another video so people like yourself could learn how to use the ferro rod under less perfect conditions. You're not always going to have fat wood and dry tinder. Calling me a "dick" and insinuating I'm insecure because I asked for another video is certainly a reflection of your immaturity and rudeness. Good luck in life with that attitude.

@ Thank you for the info. I will definitely check back intermittently. I've been invited on a hiking trip to part of the Appellation trail in early spring and would love a ferro rod like yours to use since they seem very reliable and I've never used one before (a ferro rod, that is). Fire is, of course, super important on trips like that. Thank you once again for the tip. I will recommend you to friends and family and will let you know how the trip goes. Was considering doing a vlog during the hike. Will let you know. Thanks.
