This probably won’t be seen by anyone but my Grandma, who grew up in Tarpon Springs FL where Bertie grew up said she knew him fairly well. She told us he used to go over her house and hangout with her and her dad every so often. She got married and moved and forgot about him for a number of years till she said she heard him on the radio and couldn’t believe it! She is the reason I got to know his music! I always was so fascinated how she knew him! Anyways she’s passed away now and every time I hear this song I think of her❤️Miss her very much.

Very personal to me. My wonderful wife of 50 years and I would vacation in Key Largo back in the early 1970's. We made love on the beach in the evenings and fell in love with each other there. Also Humphrey Bogart was one of my favorite actors. This song really brings it all home to me. Thank you Bertie Higgins.

It was 1982, I was lying on the living room floor with the most beautiful girl in the world and we were falling in love to this song. A few months later I was taking her to the beach to ask her to marry me. A fateful tyre defect caused the car to crash. She was taken from this world and my life turned upside down. My life moved on. I have been married now for more than 30 years and have 4 wonderful adult children. But I am sitting here in the dark listening to this song and I feel her arms around me. My first real love, gone way way too soon. My heart breaks with the memory.

I had just moved to Florida about the time this came out, and then it was followed by Miami Vice being a huge hit. Jimmy Buffett was still big at the time too, it reminded me a lot of his "Come Monday", kind of a similar laid back sound. Those early 80's seemed like such easy, breezy days compared to now. People weren't quite sure how to follow the excitement of the 70's, and everybody was just kind of laid back, letting the 80's settle into place, wondering what path things would take next. It felt like a great time to be in Florida and soaking up the tropical vibe on the beaches, and at the tiki bars and cocktail lounges ( remember the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?), it was the perfect atmosphere for it. This song was kind of one of the last of the songs that still had a 70's sound to it, after that it was all about the new wave and the British bands hitting it big. I will always love this song and thrilled to see so many others feel the same.

Bertie once supported himself as a sponge diver, and began his career in show business at the age of twelve as a ventriloquist. No wonder his voice is so unique as he would have built up lung capacity. He was also a drummer for Tommy Roe. So yes he had it all and made the most of it co-writing this song and making it one of the most memorable songs of all time. Once you hear it he hooks you like a Tarpon so that you have to keep playing it over and over again flooding you with memories of that special love you had and maybe lost and your life was never the same again.

Your music didn't shock your parents? Come on. Music breaks down barriers. Ours did and now theirs is. Maybe if we weren't so bad they wouldn't have to work so hard to shock us. Ever think about that?

yes music changes through time, today's music has morphed into feces
@privatename36212 ай бұрын
@@michelewalburn4376 No. You're wrong. Forget Rap and Hip Hop music with its constant race to the bottom on vile lyrics (I'm looking at you Cardi B and your disgusting WAP song). But when you see today's radio friendly pop artists constantly dropping F-bombs (I'm looking at you Olivia Rodrigo) in their explicit versions of so many of their songs (even freaking Taylor Swift has jumped on this terrible trend) ...that is the difference. Except for very rare cases, swearing in songs was just not a thing in past generations. Now it seems difficult for some artists to avoid doing it. And, like their stupid tattoos, vaping, and body piercings, it seems that cussing in music is also a big part of today's "rebel youth" counterculture. And unfortunately, these are the people whom todays' 6, 7 and 8 year olds aspire to be and will repeat what they see and hear.

This song takes me back to 1993.. My husband took me to Key Largo for the first time. We did have it all back then but we took it for granted and thought it would last forever. I'd give anything to go back there with him one more time...
@samuelhibron8567 Жыл бұрын
I feel the same about taking life for granted. I don't know how to enjoy it until it's a long passed memory. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? I visited Key Largo back in the 90's with my former wife. We loved it and it was very beautiful at the state park there. Our baby is now in her 30's, was always with us on trips. Great memories.

Wow, what a story! Thanks for sharing that, as a singer myself I'm very touched to know a song could mean that much to someone. It must have had some deep meaning for him, even if it might have been just about the sound of it really soothing him in some way. I've had songs I loved where just the sound of it really got to my emotions.

Bertie, I was the music director and midday DJ in South Carolina when Cat Family Records released this song. We played this thing in rotation even after MCA records wanted us to send it back because they were re-releasing it. The listeners were more important and they wanted to hear the song, sooo... we replaced the record when the newer release came in. Years later and living on Amelia Island Florida, you and your band came and played at the Shrimp Festival. Great memories, man. Thank you.

I listen to this song, with tears in my eyes because I miss my first real love. We truly had it all, just like Bogie and Bacall. Even though I’m happily married to a woman that I truly love, nothing can ever compare to the love me and my first true love shared

I know how you feel. I was in love with a woman who was married with a child. She and her husband were in a tumultuous relationship that it is a matter of time it would end in a divorce. I tried to wait it out instead being a homewrecker. Then surprisingly, she had another child with her husband. I was in my early 30s and I thought perhaps I was wrong, their marriage would last. I decided it was time to look elsewhere I am not getting any younger. Soon I met another woman who would end up to be my wife. I gave a wedding invitation card to her, and she said she's planning to get a divorce. I couldn't leave my fiance. Soon she ended her marriage. With two children, she remarried to a wealthy man who was at least 18 years older than she was. This was over 20 years ago.

You know what's amazing about this song is the fond memories of my parents playing this song in the 80s on Fridays and Saturday nights with their 33s and 45s. I always remember my father in particular singing it; my mother would chime in on the female part. I can relate with an ex - kinda, when we moved from Central NY winter time 2014 to here in FL. And come to find out, I live about 45 minutes away from where it was filmed! Talk about small world. But yep, wouldn't we all want what Bogie and Bacall had - in Key Largo 😁
