BEST beginner SINGING exercise. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of these five notes! This might be the easiest singing exercise known to man...but that doesn't mean you won't learn heaps. These five notes pack-a-punch.

It's refreshing to hear an expert give a real singing warm-up. This I believe will help any beginning singer or choir before they begin rehearsal. I went through about 5 fakes and phonies listening to their babbal about singing and warm ups before I found your station. Thank goodness I found it. Thank you Dr. Dan

Thank you, Dr. Dan, for this video. I appreciate your scientific take on vocal training. I would like to know how to sequence a daily exercise routine. I am 22 and have been singing for quite a long time now. So I can easily handle a 30 min/ above duration of exercise. So I would like to know what elements should my daily exercise comprise of. Which part of my voice (anything else like the diaphragm may be) should I start warming up first, when to do sirens or when to do slides? It would be great if you can explain a proper sequence of exercises for daily practice. Also, I used to train in Indian Classical (Hindustani) where the practice of sitting while singing is encouraged (rather a must). Can you please explain why standing is important while doing these exercises of contemporary singing.

Wonderful exercise. Particularly liked the instruction of starting with Ya. As I got higher started to get tense in the soft palate area at back - I assume tension?

Yes. That is likely to be tension due to heightened air-pressure!

Dan, a great video as always, but I would love to hear you move up higher past the passaggio and into your head voice. Maybe you could consider that in another video? Bob

Hi Dr Dan, I'm so happy I found your channel! I always wanted to sing (for myself) but I didn't know everybody could learn it. Now I'm ready to start. This first exercise was great. Should I do them for a few weeks and then move to the second exercise? I'd like to watch your videos in the proper order and train as good as possible. Thanks again 😊 One more question: am I supposed to be able to hit the highest note with a clear sound right away? It costs me trouble 😓

I've been singing since before I could speak - literally. My mother tells stories of me laying in my crib, trying to vocalize the sounds I was hearing off of the radio or record player - a lot of ABBA and Chicago, based on what she was listening to at the time. When I was in grade school, I would sing Madonna songs on the playground, generally to the approval of other kids. I would sing along to most film musicals, and what was on the radio - and I got better at projection under my own steam. But it wasn't until high school that I tried to get any sort of actual training from "experts," by taking choir classes. That turned out to be fairly useless, as the teacher was largely focused on making his favorites - the ones who had already done choir as an extracurricular for years - sound great and making sure the rest of us didn't distract from their talents. I've done different scales for years, trying to improve my range and breathing strength - and this is the first time I ever recall being told to consciously keep my tongue behind my teeth and watch for tension in my jaw. And I had no idea that I naturally figured out how to do a Simultaneous Offset while repeatedly singing "Do Re Mi" from "The Sound of Music" organ sheets my great grandmother had on hand. All that adds up to Day 1 of the 7 Days to a Better Voice class being the most productive singing lesson I've ever had. Now, if I can just figure out the best ways to open up my breathing without standing, I will be thrilled. My chronic pain conditions make standing an instantly exhausting experience, which robs energy from my voice and makes it hard to maintain a steady breath. But I am on a year-long journey to find better ways to take care of my physical and mental health, and if I can just expand my voice talents a bit, it will go a long way toward both goals. :)
