First I have to say that watching your knife reviews make me feel relaxed and entertained at the same time just like watching a movie, not only because i am a huge bowie knife collector/lover myself but also because you always show the knives in action, and the pros and cons of each knife, keep up the great work!

I know this is an older video but I'm on a DBAD marathon over here. This is a helpful and informative video. This and your full review of the Gil Hibben Highlander convinced me to finally, after years of overlooking it, to pick one of those up and it has become a fast favorite.

thanks bro!
@trentklair99794 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Hibben Highlander most definitely is a wicked fast, sharp AF, big damn knife! Personality I think it's the swiftest blade I've ever wielded. A lightning bolt in the hand. And one that will stay in the hand as well. I own over 100 knives, I do custom work, modified clip points, mirror polish finishing, sharpening, repair, restorations... Also the Hibben Raven & especially Hibben DragonLord (OMG it's wicked) would be quite formidable home defense knives. Thanks Donnie B, great stuff as always.

@@DonnieBAllDay ? no to short sword yes to a spear in close combat? $40 is doable for home defense but $65 is not? You arent making sense dude? are you a democrat or something?
@DonnieBAllDay3 жыл бұрын
@@Imakebootysclap watch your mouth! Don't ever call me a democRAT!! Haha! Short swords and spears are too long for home defense in some types of homes, plus you don't generally have one on you. As for 65 being to much, yes. The edge of the range was 50.

I have an Old Timer Bowie that I paid $25 for, around 5 years ago. I've used it quite a bit chopping small trees and vines around my place. For a budget option it has been great. It is pretty big, though...Still, I really like the contour of the blade. I would definitely trust it for defense.

Excellent video on big knives of the Bowie style. I have a few that I bought over the years. For a budget blade that would probably be effective the Cold Steel Black Bear Bowie might be good. Economical to buy, it's considered more of a machete and it comes with a good sheath. If I had to grab a big knife in an emergency, I have 2 Condor Dundee Bowie knives. I think I would grab those as a team. Thanks for sharing your big knife knowledge and for introducing me to a couple of knives I am not familiar with. All the best.

Such as the Cold Steel Black Bear Bowie Machete,the Cold Steel Barong,, Gladius and the Cutlas hybrid Machetes as well as the Bushman and the Plastic composition knife series all offer excellent multiple applications both at home and in the field. Also Military Bayonets , the Home Depot's Insulation Knifes, Lineolum utility Knifes are excellent quality multiple purpose. All are in Common Use and thus can be considered Protected under the 2nd Amendment!

In my opinion, one thing you guys need to know is that for grip, the best thing to do is to strip the varnish off and hold bare wood, but that gets very quickly dirty, so rub in a coat of tung oil or danish oil which still has the grip but keeps clean as well! Another thing, that knife that you said you weren't sure counted as a Bowie, definitely does! Everything about the shape of the blade, looks like the very original knife Resin Bowie gave to his brother Jim, and is likely the knife used at the sandbar fight! My idea of the best knife to use in a gun control area, is a bow! With arrows about as thick as a colt 45 cartridge, and a broadhead on top, that is going to really upset the planning of any scumbag! P.S. I just subscribed! Thank you for an entertaining video!😊👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Bayonet knives like Glock field knives are awesome and ww2 m3 are just awesome if you know basic knife fighting techniques. Those two are just perfect, durable and under 50$. Hi DBad, I've recently bought a Glock knife - M81 Now, I've recalled what you've said - about "close space combat" ( God forbids - no one wants to face that kind of thing ...although, I agree, it might happen ...) Now, revisiting this review , especially that you mention that "somebody might attack you with a screwdriver" - kind of made me think exactly on that Glock : kind of "bayonet screwdriver " ... It's thin but pretty strong - it's exactly as I said : a "screwdriver" knife ... Long enough (almost 7 in) but clearly a stabber ....and very nimble ... Oh, yeah - and a budget knife for sure ... And the sheath ...phenomenal ... As minimalistic and versatile as you want ... You basically can carry it on your shorts ... Oh, and that knife is carried by several spec ops arround Europe ... So, it seems is no joke ...

This is exactly why you shoukd have two blades. A larger one, maybe not this large, as his bowie lol, but I also carry a small 2 inch blade in my belt line, one if I have time, the other if I'm grabbed from behind or a tight spot, a small knife can do plenty of damage in a tight spot, taking out hands or an arm, a leg, giving enough time and space to draw the larger weaponbor escape depending on what works best in the situation.

I have a whole bunch of comments to make. Some of them might even be worth the electrons used to display them on your screen. If you are on a serious budget and are trying to make use of a knife with a somewhat slippery handle, electrical tape can be your friend. It won't make the blade easier to index, but it will be easier to hold on to. Check out the offerings of Ontario Cutlery. They may be a little more expensive than the ones Donnie considered, but they are usually excellent values for the money. Many more decades and many more pounds ago than I care to think about I had been a decent collegiate fencer. My preference would be for a knife with a blade at least 8 inches long that had some sort of handguard. While you probably are not going to be able to do a parry of an opponent's knife you don't want your hand sliding forward on to the blade. While it is arguable that longer blades are better, a 10 inch blade may be a practical maximum. I have a few knives with 12 inch blades but they can be awkward to carry and may attract more attention than you want in anything short of a total collapse of civilization scenario. It is known that at least some gang bangers make use of a fighting style where they are constantly circling their opponents. If you can position yourself in a hallway or near a wall it may put them at a slight disadvantage. Your primary targets should be your opponent's weapon hand, wrist and forearm. Knowing your timing and distance will be vital, so if at all humanly possible find people you can spar with in a safe manner so no one gets hurt. I do not remember fencing a single bout where I wasn't scored against at least once. If you do engage in a knife fight make sure you have a good first aid kit handy. Better yet try to avoid that if at all humanly possible. Last but not least, while the emphasis has been on knives, people who are worried about having to engage in defensive melee combat should take a serious look at walking sticks and canes. In legal contemplation they are not automatically considered to be weapons. You should be able to take one with you even through the most paranoid security screen. They are always out so you don't have to draw them. They are almost guaranteed to give you a reach advantage and there are numerous martial art styles that make use of them. Do NOT get a sword cane. In legal contemplation it will be a lethal concealed weapon and therefore a guaranteed felony bust. The blade won't do what you need it to (ask the guy who lost to Jim Bowie at the sandbar fight) and it loses its effectiveness as an impact weapon.
@DonnieBAllDay3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to alter a grip to make it grip. The Ontario stuff works, but the video was made for a sub 50 budget. Backing yourself into a corner is never a good thing. Fencing is awesome. The lead singer of Iron Maiden was a champion. Pretty bad ass
@NGMonocrom Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Bowie style blade. Not too long. Good rubberized handle. That's the way to go. But if a budget blade checks all the boxes except that last one, there's an easy fix. Wrap the handle with hockey grip-tape. Then wrap the handle with either tennis grip-wrap or (even better) baseball bat grip-wrap. Both are rubberized. But the latter is just a bit better for getting that solid hold. Be sure to put a bit of hockey tape on each end of the wrapped handle afterwards to finish it off. There you go. Perfect rubberized grip. Now knives such as that example from Mossy Oak, with the bone handle, become viable Home Defense options.
