What is the best catfish bait for boat or bank fishing is a question anyone who is fishing for catfish is bound to ask at some point. Choosing the best catfish bait depends on the area you fish and what species of catfish you are fishing for. If you are after channel catfish, stink bait may work better than the catfish bait you'd use for blue catfish or flathead catfish which would be some form of cut bait or live bait, If you fish for catfish, especially if you fish for catfish from the bank, having the best catfish bait is important. Whats more important is having easy access to easy catfish baits that are not hard to come by. If you are fishing for catfish from the bank the biggest obstacle is finding good catfish bait.

I generally use Chicken breast, skipjack, cured carp, and whatever sunfish I can catch. I usually have minnows on the boat to throw a crappie rod out the front for whatever will bite and I have caught channel cats and small flatheads on the minnows. Along with turtles, bass, gar, hybrids, you name it.

Seasonal bait, grasshoppers are best when the grasshoppers are here, catalpa worms are best when they are here, but bream is always good

@@Chris-xk9mg 👍True that! We had a grasshopper "bloom" here in north Texas several years ago. Left nothing but peach pits hanging on our trees. Catfish just couldn't leave the alone, day or night. Ran out of freezer space.

For those deer hunters out there, deer liver is 10 times better than chicken. (try beef liver if deer isn't an option) Can catch several fish with one bait and it stay on the hook with no egg loop knot or panty hose. Had one chunk I fished with from evening to morning and it was still dripping fresh juices.

Was at a Georgia lake , tried the chicken livers nothing was bitting for over a hour , switched to the cheapest hotdog dollor general had mixed them kool-aid had a fish on the hook 15mins layer, was my dinner for that night, it was a blue cat from the bank

I target flat heads cut pan fish or a small live bullhead are my go to (Michigan) and I still catch a lot of channel cats -so much fun and easy to get a kid into a fish with some size!!! Love it

My favorite for lower part of Catawba chain from Norman down is big 12+ inch gizzard shad cut, white perch, and big alewives. For the upper Catawba lakes I like live gizzard shad best.

One of my new go to baits for channel cats is the Berkley Powerbait Cut Shad Dough nuggets, I haven't been skunked yet using it. I c&r so I use a circle hook and mold the dough on the shank of the hook and wrap with sewing thread. Caught close to a 10 lber on it the other day. Fish Bites now has a catfish dough bait I'm interested to try as well. Also, some baits might work better than others depending on the season

Agree that best bait is what works best for you in waters you fish. I bank fish for Channel Cats in AZ and tried almost everything. All work to some degree but chunks of ham seem to consistently work best! Maybe it's the salt or sugar in the ham or combination. The cats love them! 😮

The best thing about chicken breast is the ease of use and storage and you can flavor it up as you like, I usually put 3-4 chunks in a ziplock bag and flavor with garlic, strawberry jello powder and plain old Pam cooking spray. If I don’t use it all, into the freezer until next trip . And I always have a tub of Secret 7 in the boat , it draws a lot of small eater sized fish and occasionally something large, my best was a 46 pound flathead from the Iowa river. You just never know what you can catch until you’re on the water.

I’ll have to disagree on the prepared bait in cold water. I slay them on punch bait in our coldest months. For sheer numbers of cats you can’t beat it. If I’m after big cats then I’ll use Shad. This man made bait you buy in big box stores isn’t the same as a local homemade bait I use. They won’t touch that stuff if this bait is fished next to it. They’ll ignore most natural baits over it also.

I love bluegill. If I can get them about the size of my palm or middle finger, that seems to be the perfect size for bass and catfish from the bank

Larry you’ll need to upsize your baits, or move, which is easier said than done if you’re bank fishing. When I fished tournaments a lot we’d bail out of any area where bullheads showed up.

The two worst baits I've used to date on tributaries of the Mississippi are manufactured baits and gizzard shad. Chicken has worked well, as has carp, and I usually toss all of it in a ziplock bag with strawberry gelatin powder. Not much experience with the strawberry gelatin yet, but it seems to produce. My all-time best bait has been cut bluegill, however. If fishing is rough, a bluegill goes on the hook. Even a little fingerling bluegill works better for me than a 2oz chunk of chicken.

Straight up question bud… I’ll use chicken a lot but I add the strawberry jello pack and even some garlic to it… they call it “SECRET SAUCE” have ya tried that at all??? Or do you just leave it alone? Fish can smell ya know?!

Hey. I need to pick your brain. I've tried cut bait and live bait talking about sunfish aka brim and no go. I've tried shrimp, garlic shrimp, cool aid, jello shrimp, hot dogs, jello hot dogs, Kool aid hot dogs, chicken breasts, jello chicken, Kool aid chicken, livers, and can't catch a single cat. Bass love the cut bait and the live. I'm in NC. I don't know what else to use. Please help!!!

@@DieterMelhorn Badin lake has plenty I just can't catch a single one. I've seen them pulled out of there on multiple occasions. I can catch everything else. Hell I even caught a rock. I'm determined to catch some mini sharks and show everyone I can hang with the big boys
