27 years ago GA firearm opening weekend, which was this past weekend. I got shot with a .410 slug by a kid playing with a gun at hunting camp. I'm lucky to be here for sure. Glad you fought through Tommy! Took me 10 years to get back into hunting.

61 now but as a young man I was privileged to have my dad take me on hunting and fishing trips all over Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Canada. I have been shot at 3 times, once semi unintentionally by rabbit hunters using rifles on San Jaun Island which at the time was shotgun only (and may still be), and twice by "Sound Hunters" while Elk hunting in the Cascade Mountains. The last time was a barrage of bullets from 3 hunters and I was struck in the face from tree splinters from a bullet that hit a tree a foot from my head. The only thing that saved both my Dad and myself was that it was a heavily wooded area and most of the bullets were stopped by trees. My Dad and I were wearing orange vests on all three occasions, I have not been back in the woods during ANY hunting season in over 30 years. I don't understand how anyone can be so irresponsible as to shoot at something from a sound, or a movement in the bushes or whatever, when they obviously didn't even identify the target to know if its legal to kill, much less pick the shot placement for a humane kill. ALL hunter shootings should be investigated as a crime, if you were shooting at a sound or movement you were at best poaching as you had no idea what you were shooting at and should lose all hunting privileges as you are a danger to every other hunter out there. I am not a lawyer so I don't know all the terms, but shooting someone "accidentally" like this man was shot should be a negligent criminal charge of some kind. I may be extreme, but when you have bullets whistling past your head you get a different opinion.

I agree exactly and you're 100% correct, in all 50 states hunter safety demands #1 You can identify the animal not just "its a buck" but is it a white tail, black tail or mule deer and #2 That you can shoot it safely with a lethal shot. The guy who shot him is glad they're friends or he would have lost his license 30 years ago and never got it back, could have even been charged as a felon. I saw a similar story where 2 guys were hunting for one kind of dear and shot a different kind of deer that they didn't have tags for, the guy who shot the deer lost his license for 5 years and since the only guy helped clean the animal he lost his for 3 years.

What a story. Brought back a memory of my Grandfather who was shot through the chest and came out his back in WW1. Laying face down, when they came to collect dog tags. When they flipped him over, he told them I'm not dead yet. Sent him to hospital , where he got infections 3 times but pulled through. Military on the 3rd infection sent a letter to Grandma saying they didn't expect to make it. A month later she gat a letter from him telling her he would be home in a month. Passed away in 1966 at 71 yrs old. Still had a big sunken hole in his back.

Hunting or fishing, I started taking along a IFAK years ago once I got trained as a police officer. I realized I needed blood loss control soon the off chance of an accident/animal attack in such remote locations. I would suggest a tourniquet and quik clot and some training for the gear. It is better to have and never need. I'd glad it all worked out and your are better. I've been recently started shopping for satellite rescue beacons, the areas in Everglades National Park has no cell service like 5 minutes entering the park or when going off shore.

To live after getting hit in the chest with a .308, that's a tough man right there and it weren't your time. I got shot in the leg with 6 shot rabbit hunting but luckily my Carharts ate most of the pellets up. Happy hunting everyone and for the love of God be safe out there.

I had the exact same thought. There’s always context though. Not at all an excuse mind you- as a hunter myself I agree 1 million percent. But 30 years ago, those guys were probably in their 20’s, maybe younger some of them, and clearly making the wrong decisions. Thankfully their buddy survived, hopefully they learned and taught others from their mistakes. Keep the woods, and the sport a safer place. From the awful, hopefully find some good ya know?

This place is where I call home, the Altamaha is where I learned to swim, hunt and fish. Gardi is about 8 miles outside of Jesup where I live but we usually fish that area. Im surprised they didnt catch and blues and that was a hell of a nice channel cat. I cant say Tommy and I are close but I have met him and I remember when this happened. It was pretty big news around Jesup at the time. Nice to see him doing good and teaching his son about the river as it can be extremely dangerous for those who dont respect it, hell it can be dangerous for those who do respect it. If any of you do come down to fish the Altamaha do us a big favor and carry out just a little more trash than you carry in to help keep this beautiful waterway thriving

Good friend of mine was doing deer drives in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York with a gang of hunters back in the 80's. They drove up on a very small corner wooded lot that was known to hold deer. The first truck rounded the corner and the driver got out when he spotted a deer from the road. My buddy, a U.S. Navy Sailor home on leave for hunting season was a passenger in his brothers little pickup truck when they pulled up to the woods just before the turn. He was reaching for his shotgun when he caught a slug through the windshield to his right shoulder. The shooter didn't see the truck through the woods. They drove him to the hospital and he survived but he was maimed for the rest of his life. He was given an honorable discharge from the navy and carried on what seemed like a normal happy life for almost 3-decades before taking his own life a dozen or so years ago. He was one of the toughest guys - pound for pound, that I ever knew! #BuckFever

Blue Gabe have you ever used ivory soap for bait. When I was coming up we used it in the river on catfish lines and we caught some big blues on it. We cut the soap in about one inch squares. I’m 72 years old now and I have not been in the river to try it again. That was back in my teen years my dad would take us and we would go camping at the river. I will give anything to be in a boat with my dad again it just brings back memories when I see someone in a boat do that. God bless you all and may you all be safe
