I'm thinking the portion of the side plates you removed contribute to keeping the chain straight in the kerf, thus reducing "side grab" and deflection of the cutters. Chain is pretty loose at the rivets, and the cutters are free to flex into the drag point. I'd bet if you look close at the cookies, you'll see the cookie from the "sans gullet" will be, rougher, indicating more side drag and chatter. I WILL be conducting my own tests! Always here to learn. Thanks Billy Ray - good one.

Probably right about that Scott. I have always taken them out from a weight standpoint. Less weight and the chain should spin up quicker. Marginal difference at best I'm sure but still a difference. But the side cutting you bring up makes sense, and for falling one often has to pickup the Dutchman, and that's about the only time it's advantageous.

Interesting video I believe I know why with the gullet in the square ground chain it cuts smoother and better. It seems to me when you leave the gullet in the chain it works like a chip breaker like a lathe tool. Meaning it breaks the chips into smaller pieces so it lets the chips flow better and you don't loss power cutting wood chips.

Looked like when you ground out the gullet, you nicked the side plate. In my opinion, the side plate is the most important part of cutting cross grain. The top plate peels up the chip, but the side plate is what separates it from the tree. One reason I think when you round file that the gullet is so important is that when you work it back in, that side plate is like a fine woodworkers chisel. Its not about the gullet.. but what you accomplish while you're working it. Give that no-gullet square ground chainna stroke or three, and I bet it cuts about the same as with.

Very cool info on the chains and as usual, always great content! Side note: You can skip one set of cleats, the very first cleat above the top eyelet. Your boots won’t bite you as bad on the top of your feet where the ankle meets. Just my 2 cents, mileage may vary.

Been around the timber industry in Australia for 40 years, those teeth look like they are square filed. Its your gullet that is a part of the cutting edge, I found the square file's to expensive considering they get affected by water and dirt just too much in the bush which is where I sharpen 99% of the time. So a stump vise and a round file are what I sharpen. When you say 1/2 inch chain are you sure that's an industrial chain for machine saws, I'm guessing 404 chain is the norm in my line of work. Love your enthusiasm

I hand grind and not for 20 years but enough to want to be quick with the grinding. I usually dont get the gullet for time reasons but I do get it eventually when I sharpen in the garage. I only do it because you said its better but I really dont find a noticeable difference. A 10th of a second doesnt effect my work. I did find a very noticeable difference changing the cutter when milling and lowering the rakers makes a big difference as well. Cheers

You are right not many really good saw grinders on the internet. For a a minute back in 2006 or so the likes of Art Matin and Dennis Cahoon were on the internet but it did not last long. The cutter is angled away from the leading edge. As you can easily see the top plate angles down. The side plate also angles in slightly. This leaves the point of the cutter as the first thing that contacts the wood. Since you are grinding the whole side plate off you don't need to clean out the gullets. Many people don't grind the whole side plate off and files certainly don't. With part of the side plate left after you grind the point back a little ways, the side plate will start to hit the wood before the tip. This will make your chain slow down considerably. Your side plates are gone and slightly tapered down slightly at the factory gullet so they are not interfering with the porpoising process. The "Baby C" demonstrates all you really need to work on is the top plate and side plate. Everything below that should be well inside the kerf.

Orput a new chain on if it cuts straight its yer filing ,, or put a new bar on if it goes away well ,.... See what I'm say , if you truly want to learn why you will do these things ..
