Solar powered, long term food storage ability with the best diy solar food dehydrator or dryer using the sun's energy later in the season. This Off Grid food preserver gets a few modifications for preserving food without electricity while increasing long term food preservation capabilities for more self sustaining security during a shtf or grid down situation.
A non electric food dryer also promotes healthier living by drying food for the off season nutrition needs when our organic garden isn't producing any more. If you want to know how to build a solar dyer or dehydrator then be sure to check out my build on my channel page and hopefully you will remember or pick up on the metal cabinet as being the primary reason for the success of this simple diy solar food dryer using solar energy. Also be sure to check out my 1 year food dehydrator review for further insight and thoughts. Dehydrating food for hard times is an easier food preserving method than canning for sure! Enjoy and consider building your own solar dryer design for food prepping long term.
May all your branches become full of fruit.

Wow, that is a very well made dehydrator! I love seeing your wife scorching the wood and oiling the ends, bottom, sides and top of the shelf. Great attention to detail! I built a solar wax extractor similar to your collector and it has served me well, I have always thought that adding a dehydrator to the top of my wax extractor like your setup would be good. Also insulation under the metal heat collector would be good too. Maybe the thermometer would be better above head height for you?

I think that you should add a box around the pipes between the solar collector & the drying box to conserve some more heat, also paint them black. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I haven't thought about enclosing the tube but I did think that I would paint them. I decided not to because I was already getting such high temp and I thought the silver gave it a cool industrial futuristic look. LoL Thanks.

watched a lot of videos before I found yours! I'll be doing a build very similar to yours, except maybe on wheels. Gonna need the portability! Thanks for doing the follow up, too!

I'm really new to gardening (tomatoes and peppers in 5 gallon containers new) and I'm really liking this channel. I've got my comfrey planted so I'm going to need one of these dehydrators. Thanks for the updates.

I've started looking for a dehydration unit to build. I really like yours and will buy a used metal cabinet to start with. Liked your upgrades also so mine will be done right first time. In regards to the probe to the head, take a speed square, hing it on bottom of your cabinet to drop down to level of the door, this will keep it from closing on you. Just lift it up when closing the door. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Thom. I will be building one of these over the winter. It had not occurred to me to use a metal cabinet to increase the drying heat. I have considered insulating it to do that, but the metal cabinet would function better.

For better cooling, maybe add 3 holes at the bottom of South facing door and cover with mesh and then a round piece of metal with wingnuts so you can vary cold air intake.

Thank you for sharing this great project. I found an old upright metal filing cabinet with 4 deep drawers. The idea is to use this cabinet as the food cabinet but with some modifications. The drawers pull out on rollers. Would you recommend replacing the separate drawers with one single solid metal door on hinges? Since the cabinet is tall, can the system still function successfully if the collector is parallel/next to the cabinet? The air exit holes on top of the (food) cabinet similar to your build, but the bottom entrance holes with the ducts from the collector on the very bottom side of the cabinet, instead of underneath. I would appreciate your and any one's input very much! Greetings from South Africa.

Back ups to your back ups 💜 I was taught this 1 is none 2 is 1 3 your done ETA: I would have put that thermometer on the side instead of the door. That's very dangerous. Otherwise I love this design.

Good job. I saw one fellow attach something like that collector to his house. Wonder if one could attach exhaust venting to house or greenhouse during winter when not drying food?

My concern of placing the collector alongside/next to the food cabinet is due to hot air moving upwards. If the hot air inlet ducts are placed at the very bottom on the side of the cabinet, will it still work the same way as if the ducts were below?

like the idea of metal box. Fairly new to dehydrating but I believe from earlier yrs of studying that anything over 120 F you start killing off natural food biomes (if that is the proper word). Also seen some others that that have chimneys that feed from bottom, stating that as food dries the warm air becomes heavier - falls - creates more air flow and dries quicker and exits the chimney. Need to watch how you initially built it, only I want wheels to move

Remark on the roof ventilators you added. Right now you are adding extra structures to the roof making your vatilation system relatively complex. Would it not be a lot easier if the roof of the dryer itself would be able to open, just like a lid? Do you realy need those complex looking chineys? Detach the roof from the structure and add some hinges to it so it can open up. Then based on the internal temperature you can open the roof/lid less or more to reduce or increase the airflow.

Cool proyect. You can re-calibrate your thermometer to like 20 ° less, let's say 80 when it is really 100, then just add 20° to your readings.

Thank you and That's a good idea on the thermometer if I feel it's necessary to read temps that high. I really don't need to be above the 150 mark unless I decide to try drying meat in this thing. Thanks.

@@3basketliving just in case that with the new upgrades in the summer you see it reaching the max (150) on your thermometer and want to see how hot it can actually get. For your dehydration I guess you will open those vents and regulate temp and never the 150. Good design and well built. Thanks for all your other videos.

Not sure if you still read these anymore Thom. How much more heat was generated from the painted wire ( stucco/plaster) mesh ? Is drying uniform on all 9 trays when you have it loaded ? How did peaches and pears turn out ?? Getting ready to build my unit for use in the north..Tks Thom

could you use a temp sensative fan to lower the temp in the hot summer vs another vent?
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 2 жыл бұрын
That is a possibility or another option but I have to consider the additional cost of going that route. I chose the additional vent as oppose the needs to run or have the power to run such fan. Thanks.

@@3basketliving use a 12v solar panel. You only need the temp sensor to switch the fans on if it’s sunny and too hot, if it’s sunny and too hot, a solar panel is perfect. I have a similar setup for a hoop house covered in poly. I use 12v fans for both the cooler air in take and the hot air exit. I don’t bother with a temp sensor with my setup, but you might not need one either. Improve the airflow, cool the temp but speed up dehydration, win, win ?

Reposition the thermometer to the side on the cabinet... what do you think?
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 3 жыл бұрын
I had thought of that in the beginning but wanted it more centered in the cabinet without being in direct sunlight or over the collector thinking I would have more accurate balanced readings. BUT now I'm thinking to go ahead a mount it on the side as you suggest because I got to thinking DO I REALLY NEED TO BE THAT DAMN ACCURATE WITH MY READINGS for a damn dehydrator? Gesh! It's not rocket science.....I don't know WHY I felt it was. That's what I think. I'm going to move it to the side. Thanks.
