Bought a mechanically sound Toyota Corolla for my daughter to use. Just needed a little help on the Clear Coat side of things. It had the typical clear coat peeling issue we are too familiar with.
Decided to fix the clear coat using #rustoleum paint sprayed on using the cheapest #harborfreight spray gun. Thinned with Acetone and adding Majic Hardener we got at Tractor Supply. This is the fastest way to give your car a new custom look without spending a ton of cash!
Recipe for mixing: (affiliate link or where to buy it local)
15 oz of custom mixed Rustoleum paint - amzn.to/3bxn5Xl
6 oz of Acetone as reducer/thinner - Purchase local at any big box store (gallon size)
1 oz Majic Hardener - amzn.to/3ibWgJp
Spray gun used: amzn.to/3bzV7Kj or buy it at Harbor Freight
Automotive Paint Filters: amzn.to/3skhz09
Air/Water Filter for Air Sprayers: amzn.to/3bzoLj6
Affiliate Links - products I believe in and support

Good DIY! The vaseline trick seems like a good trick. However, due to the small emblem detail it seems like you would have gotten vaseline on the parts you actually wanted to paint. In the future, might be best to just remove the emblems. Most are stuck on with some sort of glue/double sided tape and not super critical to put them back on. Enjoying your vids! Looking forward to seeing more progress on the Ford!

You aren't wrong! We were going for quick and dirty. My brother paints car to flip all the time. So time is of the essence for him. We used a Q-tip (brand not specific) to apply and it works pretty good. Like painting with a paint brush and then you just go crazy with the paint! Like craft day in elementary school! 😝

It was literally a time crunch issue. My brother let me use his shop for free. He had a car showing up Saturday night that needed an engine replaced (threw a rod right out the bottom of the block). This had to be done and out of the way. I realize that answer is full of excuses, but remember this is a $2400 car for a high school driver. If I had done everything perfect and some kid backs into it in the school parking lot..... I’d lose my mind! Right now I’d be like 🤷🏼‍♂️ let’s rub some dirt on it and spray that spot again! 😜

I have alot of experience with rust-oleum oil base enamel. I have a fleet of dump trucks I paint the bodies with rustolium ever 3 years. Great rust prevention, goes on nice and levels beautifully . It just fades real bad real fast. Like with in months. At least the red does anyway. Not sure if it's the best option for a car if you want the glossy finish to last.

The finished product looks nice! I agree it needs hubcaps, but it doesn't look bad without them. What ended up happening with the parts you put vaseline on?
@troysgarage
@troysgarage 3 жыл бұрын
Had to wait for the paint to fully cure before going after them with soapy water. The vaseline will wash away along with the paint. I'll post pictures on Instagram/Facebook so be sure to follow me there for the followup. Oh, and that's now 2 votes for caps over the steel wheels. So far its 2-0 for hubcaps. Unless my own vote counts then it's 2-1 😜
@jasoncooper3116
@jasoncooper3116 3 жыл бұрын
I'll be the 3rd hubcap vote. It looks good without them though. For something a little different, you could use chrome beauty rings and center caps. I am pretty sure that is a 5x4.5 lug pattern so you could get chrome center caps from a lot of different Fords, or even at a trailer supply store. A lot of trailers use the same lug pattern.

Very carefully, it's like painting it on. We used Q-tips and just take your time. Once the paint is dry (I waited 4 days) you can wipe them all off and eventually use a mild cleaner to clear the "grease" (I wouldn't use a cleaner/soap until several days have passed to let the paint cure).

Yeah you clear coat Rustoleum, but you will want to make sure it’s fully gassed of (cured). How long that takes depends on a lot of factors, temp, humidity, etc. I would give it a good 30 days unless it’s super hot and dry. You would want to cut and buff first but obviously no wax.

Vaseline is a bad idea as it never stays where it is meant to - the air spits it across panels.... even if you think it doesn't. Bumper repair looks like a dogs dinner as you didn't fill it properly - time spent smoothing that would have been time well spent - plus the paint went on too light/dry - which is why it looks flat as a pancake. Blow all the panels over with a drop-coat first - keep the gun well back, just mist it on. Then put on a proper coat, let it flash, put on another wetter coat - gives it gloss. Warming the paint first also makes a HUGE difference to how it flows out. All that whinging out of the way, car looks 1000 times better than you started with, you got it looking nice at a fraction of the cost a re-spray could be bought for & also have the satisfaction of saying "I did that!" which you did. :-) So good job. The next one you do will be even better no doubt. :-) Don't hit the next one with such a coarse paper - buy better quality 240 or 320 grit, use that on defects, use 320 to scuff the lot up (or just a maroon pad) - good 240 cuts nicer than crap 180 & doesn't leave such deep scratches that lead to a dull finish. Plus a maroon pad gives loads of key, is five times faster & much nicer to use. None of that ^ is aimed at you really, btw TG - it's just a comment for people who are maybe new to painting stuff.

BEST EVER is a bit of a stretch. Should say "Better than it did look" It has a lot of orange peel which takes away from the paint's reflection. I understand it's just a beater but a little wet sand and buff would make it pop. You get a 10 for the DIY factor but a solid 6 for the orange peel. Cheers.

@tossedsalad5532 it has lost its “shine” from UV exposure. We park it outside. I would clear it if time permits. A buddy of mine just released a video showing how to clear over Rustoleum paint. I’d suggest watching this video as well and then decide how you want to proceed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9Jln6ySsKrOdHk.htmlsi=zcLRxh5BuoEIcAGk

I agree it would have made a huge difference, but under a time crunch it's hard to think clearly. Camera rolling adds to the pressure. I just posted a follow up video on the "unmasking" of the emblems from this paint job. check it out!

The video before this one I sanded and primed. Putting on the wrong color. Just wasn’t right so we went for the whole car. No need to prime if you don’t sand down to bare metal. But you do need to scuff the surface for the paint to stick good.

It will do just fine for that car. I've used a lot of Rustolium on stuff that got it, or it was going to get nothing. Be more aggressive with that paint. The recipe is use a lot more thinner, use more air to paint mix at the gun at less pressure, spray closer, move faster, let flash completely to the touch between coats. And spray 5 coats. And it like a siphon gun. It will go down slick with no runs. And start to fade in about 4 years.

The original paint looked 10x better than after you painted it. Didn't do any body work, tape off the wheel wells or underneath, used vasoline on emblems 😂. That's not how you repair a crack in a plastic bumper, you reinforce it from behind and then fill it from the front. Sorry, but I've gotta say it how it is. Looks bad.

I just watched Trumps speech tonight from the Oval Office. He is in NO way responsible for the actions of those who violated the sacred capital building. I condemn those who were involved along with President Trump! Those responsible have damaged the cause of Making America Great Again. The impeachment trial is nothing more than a witch hunt! A complete waste of taxpayer resources. People should remove emotion from their hearts and minds when listening to his speeches and they would hear the true message of a Patriot who loves this country and it's citizens. But wait..... did you want to talk about politics? Sorry, end of my soap box, stepping down. Trump for the win!!! 🙌🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙌 4 more years, either now or later, but it's gonna happen!

You aren’t wrong. This cost me about $80 with all materials (tape, plastic sheeting and paint). My first full car paint job and even without cut and buff it actually looks pretty good. Remember this is a $3000 car for a teenage driver. Used it as good practice as I continue to learn more and more with each spray job. So take it down a notch or two. All things considered this is great!
