How good of a fighter was Ned Stark? Let’s close out this debate Once and for all. I will be sourcing information from the show, the books, AND an interview by George R. R. Martin himself which proves two things:
(1) Ser Jaime Lannister was a better fighter than Lord Eddard Stark
(2) Ned was NOT an elite fighter

In the show version of Ned, I think Jaime's reaction to Ned being stabbed in the leg can be taken 2 ways-either he was upset that Ned was dishonored OR he was insulted that the guard thought he needed the help. It's the second I find interesting, because it tells us one thing for CERTAIN-the guard thought he needed the help, no matter if he did or did not. That makes it interesting, because someone who was watching first hand and knew how his lord fought was nervous enough about the outcome to make the outcome certain...

I thought of it like the soldier deprived Jamie of the thrill he would have by fighting an actual 'challenge' for once instead of the common rabble he usually faces. Jamie desired to prove himself in battle and even somewhat gain ned's approval by beating him in an even and honourable duel
@atlasprime6193
@atlasprime6193 Жыл бұрын
I interpreted as Jaime being angry at the guard for proving Ned to be right in his view about Jaime and the Lannisters. Ned considers the family dishonorable with their actions near the end of the war (the killing of Elia and her children), along with Jaime backstabbing his King. And now, after all these years, not only was Jaime getting a chance to fight the man who slew Arthur Dawn, who Jaime squired for, but he was also getting a chance to fight honorably, showing Ned he was more than just a Kingslayer. The Lannister guard screwed all that up however.

Just rewatched Tower scene there are at least 6 on Ned's side counting him and Howland. As to "Now it ends" it doesn't seem to me like its a statement of confidence in the numbers, more just a matter of fact reply seeing as Dayne and Hightower are the last real fighters on the Targaryen side and that Once they are gone the war is officially settled.

Jaime was referring to Gregor and Sandor Clegane and Barristan Selmy when he said there were only 3 fighters ALIVE in the 7 kingdoms that would stand a chance against him. That's the part that a lot of people misunderstood about that part, Jaime said there were only 3 people in the kingdoms that were alive. So it's easy to figure out who he's talking about, the Clegane brothers and Selmy.

I doubt he meant gregor. Gregor was a brute but jaime was an S tier he knew he could beat him. I’m certain jaime meant greatjon umber in place of gregor. The greatjon was a beast and he had a brain. Ned most definitely is far above average good soldiers. But not really in the league of Barrister Selmy, Robert Baratheon or Arthur Dayne. I fee like in the show the swordmanship hierarchy would be something like this: 1. Arthur dayne 2. Barristan Selmy 3. Robert Baratheon. 4.Jaime Lannister 5. Sandor Clegane / Syrio Forel 6. Brienne There are people who are more deadlier in the show than the ones in the list but I tried to do it only for people who are excellent with swords. If we are talking about 1v1 fight with any weapon, then I would put The mountain in the list right after Dayne just because of his durability and Oberyn Martell before Jaime Lannister

Yeah, but you are not going to get exponentially more skilled. Or even keep improving at the same rate. Skill improvement would roughly follow the logarithmic curve as it does in real life with athletes or even other professionals like surgeons. There is also likely a cap and disadvantages with facing the same, less good opponents like orcs all the time. Raw talent would likely win.

Experience>skill/talent, a guy who fought for nearly a century have seen enough wars, battles, techniques, duels, strategies to not even doubt himself or feel fear, confidence alone would be sky high, think of it like a video game character, a lvl 70 vs a lvl 30 / 35.
@Elador1000
@Elador1000 5 жыл бұрын
Realistically speaking, he would not feel fear, because he would be a nut job after such a long span of fighting. Combat performance of active duty soldiers at both world wars peaked at about 9-24 months and then decreased due to psychological problems. And we don't really need to look at the "Experience over talent" too far. Look at the martial sports and champion title fights in which talented contender is quite often way younger than is the champion and have less experience. Same goes for surgeons and so on. As I have stated, the world is not a video game with levels, the experiences have limited benefits. They have diminishing returns, in economic language. That begin said, LOTR is not realistic at all. It's like trying to compare realistic human beings with superheroes.

Depending on the Number of Tiers and the Definitions there in, I'd agree with you. Eg: Tiers 1: Mythical Fighters: Greatest Fighters of History/Mythology, Usually dead for quite some time. 2: Legendary Fighters: Best Fighters in the kingdom, Alive or recently dead. 3: Elite Fighters: Not the Best in the realm but well above average. 4: Above Avg Fighters: Any note worthy character who is considers a decent fighter. 5: Average Fighters: Standard. 6: Below Avg: Slightly sub par to the Standard. 7: Well Below Avg: Note worthily bad fighters. 8: Worst of the Worst: Legendarily Bad fighters / completely incompetent combatants. In a structure like/similar to this, i would definitely agree Ned is tier 3. (TV Ned Anyway.)

The only reason i even mention it, is because i feel like, "Elite" is an apt description of Ned's fighting abilities. I always saw Ned as more of a brawler, a fighter as opposed to Jamie’s swordsman. Jamie would win in a straight fight but in a battle with distractions Ned might be able to take advantage/play a bit dirty to win.

You also got to mention that in each war Ned fought he was in good condition after each battle. Unlike Robert and barriston selmy he was not badly injured and let's be honest he would be a prime target for a young squire or a knight if they wanted fame. And when he spared with yohn Royce he was likely knocked down by his opponent superior strength and size lord Royce is a big as the hound. If the fight was real it likely look similar to Jon Vs the magnate of the thenns. In terms of sword skill he may be better than Royce.

@christianrobinson4227
@christianrobinson4227 7 жыл бұрын
I think it makes more sense if Jaime was not trying to kill him, with the obvious reason being that Tyrion would certainly be killed by Catelyn if Ned was killed, just like Ned says before the fight. However, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jaime was trying to kill him anyway. Many authors describe their characters as reckless and impulsive, but few actually have these traits to an extreme level. Jaime Lannister lives to kill, and engaging him in a fight is probably like a lion hunting it's prey. The lion forgets everything else around him and listens to it's instincts. It's very possible that Jaime was like "fuck it," and decided that if Ned wants to throw down, he's going to kill him anyway. He doesn't think long term whatsoever.

i like your post. bc i agree with ur first statement, but its always healthy to have an open mind. well thought out, sir!! side note, i liek interprettying it as him not wanting to kill Ned, because then it makes jaime look pretty good since it would imply he was confident, and successfully, fighting 80% versus ned at 100% so to say. and if u arent fighting to kill you, are at a severe disavantge, which would speak to his skill set in "break even" anyway, thanks again for sharing ur ideas!

I think Martin is wrong about the Jamie/Aragorn matchup. Aragorn is much older than Jamie and still in the prime of his life. He’s been trained by the Rangers, who are elites, and by the elves who live for thousands of years. Aragorn has also spent most of his long life fighting people. It would be a good fight but I give it to Aragorn 7/10

I think that George R.R.'s assessment of Boromir as comparable to Aragorn is incorrect. Aragorn was a master swordsman, possibly the greatest in Middle-earth. He had 60+ years of fighting experience, which is longer than Boromir had been alive and Aragorn's body was technically closer to its prime than Boromir. This is without even mentioning that Aragorn has some almost magical properties due to his lineage and royal blood. There is no reasonable situation in which Aragorn would not beat Boromir. That said, I think George has kind of overrated Boromir. But, even so, I think he has to a much greater extent underrated Aragorn (who would certainly demolish Jaimie lannister. Greatest evidence being that while in Game of Thrones people found it impressive that Jaimie could defeat as many as a dozen men by himself. However, Aragorn was known to fight off dozens upon dozens of trained urukhai alone. Any professional swordsman would tell you that fighting multiple opponents is almost always more impressive than fighting more skilled opponents in small numbers. Aragorn would have absolutely destroyed Jaimie. And Boromir would not necessarily have defeated Aragorn. Unlike Aragorn, Boromir mostly fought with an army, not alone as a ranger. He rarely had opportunities to fight lots of people alone. So he was a much less impressive fighter.

george didnt compare aragorn and boromir. i did a quick internet search and, at best, boromir is equal to aragorn. so if Jaime > aragorn/boromir > Ned, then Jaime > Ned and if we assume that george thinks Aragorn > Boromir, it makes the Jaime vs Ned gap even bigger

I suspect you are basing your opinions of Borimir a little on the movies than the books. What you have to understand is that Aragorn in the books is 6'6" and lean. Boromir is described as slightly shorter than Aragorn and much bigger built so much so that a very tall man an elf and a Dwarf known for strength struggled to carry his body. Most ppl place his height at about 6'4". He's also not that old. He fought and killed many more orcs in the books at his death than in the show and he was no slouch in the show. So It would be a 6'4" powerhouse with excellent sword fighting skills vs an average sized world weary Ned who admitted himself he would have died at the Tower of Joy if it weren't for little Howland Reed.

Since we only have a short fight scene to judge in the TV series to judge from, we have to consider what we heard told about Ned. The greatest comment on Ned's ability came from Barristan the Bold himself: when they walk out of the tent Ser Hugh of the Vale was being cared for in, Ned commented that he was glad he never met Ser Barristan on the field of battle and implied he knew he would be dead (I agree with that completely.) However, Barristan was quick to praise Eddard, saying: "You're too modest. I've seen you cut down a dozen great knights." Ser Barristan was not one to pass out false praise, nor to lie. Cutting down a dozen great knights is no small feat, and it's not something to be done by an ordinary fighter.

The thing with Ned....book or show..he was a better than average fighter. He was taught to fight by master at arm's at winterfell and the eyrie. He was a Lord yes, but started training as a child with sword, bow,etc. And was a soldier his whole life. The biggest thing about him besides any skill is that anytime he is fighting someone who is considered "elite" , he is fighting for something very important. Example: tower of joy. I think he's better for fighting when he knows what he's fighting for besides pride.

First of all, Lord Eddard was a great fighter but not an elite one. He could best any opponent beyond the greats one on one but in terms of being a general he was without equal beyond his 'two' eldest sons Robb and Jon who are both nigh undefeatable. He only defeated ser Arthur due to Lord Howland Reed's assitiance in cutting off part of said Kingsguard's sword hand. Thus, resulting in the Sword of the Morning agreeing to take the 'Black' and a new persona

I think it boils down to Ned's own comments (show version), that he is not a tourney fighter. He could hold his own enough to take down the every day soldier*, and even last a while against the greats, but his strength was in leading his armies to victory on a battlefield, not 1on1 fights, and Northern armies were among the strongest. Ned was a great leader, not a great fighter. *We have to keep in mind, the ever day soldier fighting in a war, were just regular men most of the time, and if they had ever even swung a sword before, it wasn't since the last war (or previous battle of the current one). They weren't constantly training in some castle waiting to be called up to fight. For a trained lord, defeating them would be easy, even several at once.

Alright I guess I'm really late to the party to comment, but I've been having a bit of a nostalgia bug for GoT and LOTR and wanted to chime in a bit for all that's worth. Just from my general impressions from the books and shows, I feel like Ned was a competent swordsman and at the very least could hold his own in a fight. It feels like the Northerners were people who rarely enjoyed lets say the finer pleasures in life and mostly focused on warfare from potential wildling and Iron Born attacks and planning to survive against the next coming winter, which may add more strength to their fighting ability and maybe more practice with swords and various weapons. Also, maybe since Ned was a younger brother, he may have been expected to be more of a fighter than a ruler so he may have an above average knowledge with using a sword. However, I never got the impression he would be able to outclass Jaime in a true uninterrupted fight. The show and books seem to indicate that Jaime has skills with a sword that is rare for many people to match. I feel for Ned to best Jaime in a duel it would occur only if Jaime somehow made a slight error that Ned would be able to take advantage of very quickly. The only evidence that I was able to find that would support Ned being on par with Jaime comes from the Game of Thrones wiki page that says this about Jaime: "He was arguably one of the greatest swordsmen who has ever lived with few (such as Ned Stark, Jon and Brienne) able to match him." I'm not overall familiar with who can add content to a wiki page and what those standards require but just from this tidbit of information, whoever wrote it at least claims that Ned and Jaime are on somewhat of an equal status in regards to swordsmanship. It was always my interpretation that I gathered from many fan videos and threads that Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy, and Jaime Lannister were the standouts among swordsmen in Westeros.

Ned is no pushover, but Arthur Dayne could only really be matched with Jaime Lannister or Barristan Selmy in his prime. Which is why Howland Reed's intervention is key- the crannogmen never fight fair or with conventional tactics, so Arthur could never have suspected that Reed would be the one to intervene. The show has Reed stab Arthur in the neck, but it is more likely he used a blow dart or crossbow to hit Arthur in the knee or arm to disable him.

Also, I kind of thought Ned avoided fighting in tournaments at least partially to avoid scrutiny of his fighting abilities versus his version of the events at the Tower of Joy. I think Jon Snow is a better fighter than Ned. He has beaten a Thenn warrior, a White Walker, and Quorin Halfhand (realizing there is argument that the Halfhand let him win). One similarity between the two is their bravery in the face of danger. Jon Snow faced down the Bolton army in the Battle of the Bastards with the same courage that Ned had in the fight at the Tower of Joy. That kind of courage puts them both above average, considering neither of them have been killed in battle.

Jon's honestly more lucky than good. Quorin lets him win, and Jon himself admits that had it been real, the Halfhand would have cut him to ribbons. I think we have an unrealistic view of Jon's fighting ability. We saw him toying with the other Nights Watch recruits, but every real fight since then has been an absolute struggle, where he mostly escapes/survives by luck. I'm not trying to say he's bad, but he's not as good as the elite level swordsmen we've seen.

Show-Ned was a television protagonist, so it's only natural the writers want him to be elevated as a greater warrior than Book-Ned is. I truly believe a one-on-one sword fight between Jaime and Ned in the books would be a mismatch. Ned is described more as a good battle commander than a warrior. Although I look forward to the book's version of events at the ToJ to actually see how Ned fared in that battle. I suspect he was saved by the numbers (and probably a back stabbing incident at the end of the fight like the show). I don't really see why Ned fans care about this aspect of him that much anyway. Let the blowhards like Jaime Lannister bum about their abilities, when in reality battles are fought with numbers, tactics and strategy - and surely Ned would beat Jaime in this sense as his son did.

I think that Ned Stark COULD have been a top fighter if he had competed in tourneys and such, he had the potential to be a top 3 fighter if not the top fighter in Westeros. He just didn't want to compete and just wanted to rule over the North.

I haven't read the books, but from the context of the show, and even the sample of the script, it would seem they implied Ned and Jaimie to be roughly equals. Also on the show Ned had Syrio train Arya and implied they were friends, so they might have trained together as fellow warriors too.

1 on 1 fights don't really matter anyway, unless you are an assassin like Arya or are in a spot where you need to have a trial by combat but if you were a smart lord you wouldn't get in those situations. Better question to ask is would you rather have 3 dragons or 1000 Sir Arthur Daynes? Then think about the show where how an army fights is not more important than anything else as the show doesn't follow basic battle logic, spearmen getting destroyed by cavalry, using longswords as short swords, blades easily going through plate, no helmets in battle etc.

Trying to grade Ned is tricky. He not a tourney kind of guy, but made it through 2 wars maybe he is lucky but that ran out. Q&A: Who do you think is the best fighter in either the books or show that is alive now? I say Breanne.
@tyebrown2741
@tyebrown2741 7 жыл бұрын
In the show maybe she may be one of the best fighters her and Jon are probably in that elite section. In the books I wouldn't say so she did well in one tourney winning but when it comes down to her actually combat skills in an actual fight she got her face munched off by biter

@Ari33sa
@Ari33sa 7 жыл бұрын
didn't Gendry kill Biter? spear through the back of the head... really reminiscent of how Pod killed moore... But no, I don't think Book Brienne ranks in the top... maybe not even top 10 in the books. After all people like Barristan Selmy are stll alive there. And though he's old,I'd still give him the benefit of the doubt. Then of course there's the Zombie-Mountain. Other strong fighters on Dany's side like Jorah, Belwas and Daario. Then there are Garlan Tyrell, Lyn Corbray, Areo Hotah... Show Brienne is definitally incredible... Book-Brienne is more realistic. She's 18 years old and she's a girl with little experiance compared to others, with not quite as good of a swordsman's education as most of the men got. Her strongest weapon is that most men underestimate her. I doubt Book-Brienne would have been able to defeat Sandor clegane.

Ned may not be the best but he'd probably have experience fighting people better than him. I'd say he's actually probably a dirtier fighter at least than we give him credit for. Consider the fact that he trained with Robert Baratheon for near on 10 years (who was already said to be incredibly strong for his age). I'm sure he's learned some tactics for surviving a 1 on 1 with someone who outclasses him. Plus with Yohn Royce's bit, Waymar was meant to be recruited fairly recently if memory serves, so Ned probably fought Bronze Yohn at around 10 years after his last real fight (even then he was a commander not a front line soldier, if I recall). And I honestly can't take Martin's rankings seriously if he truely believes Jaime Lannister could beat Aragorn in a fight.

I just realized something. If you look at 2:55, pause, and read the final paragraph on the first page it says that the knight (Ser Gerold Hightower) died among his brothers Ser Arther Dayne and Ser Oswell Whent while fighting against quote “A small force commanded by Eddard Stark of Winterfell”. So my question is was Whent actually there despite not seeing him during the fight in the show? That would explain why two of Eddard’s fighters are missing and why Whent isn’t in the scene during the actual fight.

Well, so i mean in the show he's seen in a couple of fights being pretty decent and leads the charge in the battle of the blackwater and when ramsay charges him at winterfell he survives the first wave and most likely a pretty crazy fight, if you look at the battle of the bastards, the position that Jon was in and how crazy it was on the ground, Stannis was very likely in a similar situation and made it through, and then fought off two more guys that we see. So, if we just look at the show where would he rank in say a top 50 fighters/warriors of westeros?

Quorin was probably one of the best fighters in Westerosi history. Let us consider the following facts: - He was the best in The Watch - He got his sword hand cut off, and trained to become even better than before with his other hand. That's the stuff of legend. - He probably has more experience than anyone else in the books: He probably joined the watch at about Jon's age and was probably around 50 at the time of the books, which means he had been risking his life on a daily (or at least weekly) basis for about 35 years. - Even at his age, he was known to be incredibly quick, faster probably than Oberyn or Loras - He never fought with a shield

I think aragorn would win the fight simply because he has skills as a ranger and a lifetime of experience with his slow aging. I believe jaime would have had an advantage in sword combat but aragorn would compensate with "dirty" tactics like headbutts during a clinch and using his knife, much in the same way bronn fights in the show.

I definitely think that in terms of the show, Ned is still a great fighter but he’s not quite at the level of Jaime but when he was younger he was definitely a better fighter in the years immediately after the rebellion or perhaps even the siege of pyke. Elite fighter as a youth but not top tier.

hey thanks for the kind words! i dont have a full ranking list yet, but im planning on doing two videos. something like a top 20 for the show and a top 50 for the books. so i dont know where i rank bronn yet but ill tell ya this. ive alwyas been a fan of him. thats never changed. but recently, im starting to think hes better than i saw him in the past. i think its because i fell in the love with the "drizzt" in the last couple years. and drizzt has a panther. i hadnt read GoT for a couple years. but im doing a reread right now, and Catelyn stark keeps saying the bronn moves like a panther hah. also, i made notes on a video that im gonna do on bronns fight in the books versus the show. nothing special. but figured id throw that out there since it was a coincidence u mentioned bronn. i've been tinking of him, too sorry to be so vague. and im still not sure id put him above a lot of the genereall agreed upon "awesome" fighters. but im not ruling him out until i do those lists where do u rank him, if u dont mind me asking/?

Not sure where I rank Bronn as well, he's definitely not on Jaime's or Dayne's level, but I am pretty sure he would beat Trant, the Kettleblacks, and Jon Snow easily in single combat. I think his skill's probably on par with Daario's.
@bridge4
@bridge4 7 жыл бұрын
ah cool. thats sort of where i see Bronn as well. dhaario is a trricky one tho. i have a tendency of selling him short i think. and what i mean is, i also would rank him around bronns skill level. and that might be a mistake. dhaario is a pit fighter. and a lot of people hold that against them, since they aren't used to fighting people with plate and mail. but i dunno...its high fantasy. id like to think that the very best fit fighter ever could stand with the best of trained noblemen knights. not saying dhaario is that dude. maybe belwas is. but dhaario did defeat enough people to earn his freedom from his master, right?

I got the impression that Ned was a veteran, and Jaime was an arrogant pretty rich boy that was stupid enough to get himself captured in a real war. This reminds me a little of the conversation between Arya and Hot Pie on what a battle is. Basically, Jaime has had some small scale fights, but not where he was in command, and almost no experience of war. The fight you're talking about, not to minimize it, was bandit hunting. Jaime was little more than a background character that held his own, sure, until the big boys came to finish off the bandits. When he was captured, he was tricked, and his own arrogance is what allowed that to happen. Again, not to minimize his individual fighting skill, but getting himself captured was a huge strategic loss. That's not something Tywin, Ned, or even Robb would let happen so easily.
