These are my favorite Rossington solos in no particular order, however, I did find myself with Gimme Three Steps and Saturday Night Special stuck in my head. I tried lining up the live video with the official audio the best I could, but he plays some of the songs differently and at a different speed, especially T for Texas. I have plans for a part 2 and a best slide guitar version as well.
They're all going to be songs by the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, not the band today
0:00 Workin' For MCA
1:36 Gimme Three Steps
3:59 Call Me The Breeze
5:02 Saturday Night Special
6:05 Poison Whiskey
6:48 T For Texas
I do not own any video or audio

I always felt it was Gary's licks and fills that gave Lynyrd Skynyrd their unique sound. They've had some great guitarists (and special keyboardist), but Gary sets the band's sound apart from other bands. Great band and artists all!

Steve was just getting started with them and had he lived, he would have become the most solid of them all. They all knew Steve had what it took.

He didn't have Allen's flash, but Gary was just SO technically solid and clean. His licks are the backbone of Skynyrd's work. When you see him tearing it up on Call Me the Breeze, you realize he is every bit as fast as Allen, just different. Underrated slide work, too. I love their stylistic differences, but I think that Gary is a better overall guitarist.

Have you lost your mind? Gary is the first one to admit Allen was the best guitar player in the band including the 2 pop arists they temporarily had by the name of Ed and Steve. Rickey Medlocke admits Allen was the best player with Skynyrd too. Also this video is poorly put together.

@@p.g.8138 As a guitarist, I am a total geek in this area. Their styles complimented each other - Allen was flashier, Gary was a more controlled style. Speed isn't the only thing that counts, and that's not taking anything away from Allen. And Steve Gaines was as good as either of them - we only have a little of his work to go by, but what there was was outstanding. It's interesting to watch him go note-for-note with Allen in ending of Freebird solo, and his work on I Know a Little, T for Texas, etc is awesome too. There's a reason why he pushed both Collins and Rossington to new heights, and why Ronnie said they'd all be in his shadow some day. And sorry brother, but to call Gaines a "pop artist" is absurd - he was completely grounded in blues and C&W guitar. Just listen to his finger-picking and slide work.

@@WhizzingFish12 Show me a video were Steve played the Freebird solo note to note with Allen? Who were you watching? Not Skynyrd. Maybe along with him on a very small part of the solo. I have an interview on you tube with Gary and Rickey and they said Allen was one of the greatest guitarists of all time and people don't give him credit for it, how can you dispute that. They were both friends of Allen's. They only mentioned Allen, not themselves or Steve. I also talked to a bandmates of Allen's on FB and he said he was one of the greatest guitar player's of all time. This guy played with Molley Hatchet and was forming a band with Allen after RCB and ACB disbanded.

@@p.g.8138 So much hostility here and I don't know why. Check out the live footage from both Oakland and Knebworth (and One More from the Road) and you will see what I mean. It''s primarily Allen's solo of course but at multiple key moments Gaines steps in and mirrors him note-for-note, including on some of the most technical moments. And my commentary initially wasn't even about Gaines, but about Rossington, whose style I like better and whose licks form the basis for so much of Skynyrd's sound. If you think his playing on Call Me the Breeze doesn't show his talent I don't know what to say (not to mention his very proficient slide work). To each their own though. BTW, great guitarists calling others better than them happens all the time. Clapton, Santana, Hendrix, SRV, Page, Beck, Allman, Bonamassa, etc all said others are better than them. It's professional courtesy, lol. No need to respond as I'm not arguing with you. I think Allen was absolutely fantastic in his own style - certainly Top 25 of all time in the rock genre. That's pretty damn good.
