One of the easiest ways to hold the feathers of the hoof out of the way is to cut the toe off an old sock and slip the hoof into the toeless sock. I’ve used this method for many years and it works beautifully. Btw, that is a beautiful Paint horse.

I grew up in a small town in the country, but they pushed us to go to college and I never knew that an awesome career like this was a thing. Wish I could have learned to be a farrier.

I respect the fact that this is the first woman farrier I have watched. He does a good trim. I’m not fond of her technique but each farrier has their own version of the method they practice. Very nice horse. I have owned quarter horses and Sport Ponies for eventing. Enjoy your Gypsy they are fun horses to ride and work with. ❣️❣️❣️

If you go to Home Depot or a U-Haul rental store you can get those little hand rolls of packaging in saran wrap, 4 inches thick, and can be used to wrap up the hair above the roof while working, then unwrapped and released without it sticking like tape

My wife and I have Tennessee walking horses (lite shod, not padded) and it amazes me at the different ways climate and environment can affect the hooves. Our hooves are so soft and the frogs are a lot more sensitive. We live in concord NC so the soil here is a lot more forgiving.

In over 50 years around horses, working with many breeds, I’ve never seen the ergots grown out that huge. When the farrier was cutting the chunks off the hind feet - sticking out of the back off the leg, sticking out through the feathers - by the hoof that is called the ergot. Chestnuts I’ve seen get big, I soften them up with Vaseline or baby oil & you can finger peel those off in a couple of days. The frog & chestnuts are absolute treats for dogs & a high majority of folks who have horses, have dogs & dogs love when the farrier comes for a visit - that means it is treat time! I did have concern for the guy making this clip, there is no way you can move as quick as a horse can kick, horses don’t need an excuse to kick & there is no footage worth getting your face rearrange for a good shot. JMHO

Being a horsewomen myself, I love watching the TLC this mount is getting. It baffles me, however, that the irgots and chestnuts aren't tended to regularly by it's owner. It doesn't take bit some grooming to realize these things need to be trimmed down. Using nippers to have to remove these is great but shouldn't have to be done. Glad this magnificent beast got his/her spa day. Greetings from Utah.

I always feel bad for the farrier who has to have so much patience and strength for the horse not to mention being able to reassure the people who own the horse that what they are doing is best for the horse. The amount of knowledge that goes into the job is amazing as well!

Being on KZfaq has taught me that a lot of people own horses who don't know about under the hoof care, especially in America. Happy you're showing this, many would not trim the frog like that. But just like the skin that grows on our fingernails we need to remove it when it over grows.

I was grooming a two ton bull and he shifted. Stood on my big toe, in a leather boot. Couldn't shift him for what felt like forever. Even using my other foot to kick him in the hock. Finally he moved and I pulled my foot out. Nothing broken. And a story to tell.

I've seen some farriers hold their ankle hair up out of the way by wrapping it up with that koban wrap that sticks to itself. Just letting you know in case you wanted to save any time

I just like seeing hooves being fixed, i don't want to see any people or animals get hurt, i know it happens when you're working with big animals and limited equipment, but they do a great service to the world.

A lot of Farriers use a roll of Saran Wrap to wrap up the hoof hair. I think that they cut a roll of it in half and use half of a roll at a time. Works really well. They say that it is cheap to use.
