Here is my new favorite shotgun mic for film work. It's the Rode NTG 4+. I have previously also used a Rode microphone but it was an older model the Rode NTG 2. This new version has better audio sensitivity and also a built in battery so it doesn't require phantom power.
This is my video review of the mic with audio samples. Also I show you my whole setup with the boom pole, shock mount and recorder.

I did a parallel recording with the NTG2 and NGT4+ as separate tracks on a Zoom F8. I preferred the sound from the NTG2, but that's just me :) you can't go wrong with either.

I will definitely be saving up for this microphone setup without the boom pole and extra cables. It may be a while until I can afford it, but it's definitely going to be worth it! Your video has been the most useful filmmaking related video I have ever watched, great job!

I love these, thanks a lot!! Two pretty basic/general questions here: how does cable length and/or geometry factor in on audio quality, are the unavoidable losses significant or do you not really notice much? And how do you handle rainy weather conditions with this setup? I guess an umbrella could probably suffice if what you're filming should stay dry as well, but if your subject is supposed to be rained on I assume you'd use some kind of mic cover. What do you use for that?
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 8 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Cable length is not an issue up to 20ft if the mic is powered like this one. Longer than 20ft and you might notice signal strength loss. Second answer about the rain. I just use a plastic bag on top of the mic if it's really badly raining. Make sure the front end of the mic is not covered though. But if the rain is light I just use the blimp and deadcat on it. It will get wet but won't damage the mic since the mic doesn't touch it. After a day of filming in the rain I just dry out the blimp and deadcat.

Problem with a recording that has background or ambient sounds recorded together with the subject audio is when editing, it is hard to separate the two so its impossible to get a seamless trabsition. That is why you want to capture clean audio only and then separately record just the ambient sounds and in editing overlay the final audio edit with the ambient sounds.

Superb results. I was listening with my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones at position 11:10 and I could hear some bumping at the low end. I assume you didn't enguage the high-pass filter. You're never gonna be COMPLETELY protected. It's still worth being vigilant and taking appropriate methods in post.

It’s a bit unusual, that you use this semiprofessional NTG-2 or NTG-4 for your projects. And in addition I owned the Rode Boompole and Blimp Mk II and sold the Boompole, after replacing it with the Boompole Pro from carbon fiber. And normally you use an audio mixer in a bag on set. 🙈

Review by Ben Osmo for Videomaker magazine says the NTG4+ was designed as an improvement over the NTG2 but that it is a step below the NTG3 as Rode went out of order on their numbers this time. NTG3 is superior in their RF-bias condensers RF rejection, sound quality and ability to perform in all weather conditions. Basically, you get what you pay for as reflected in the pricing of the NTG4+ (approx. $289) and NTG3 (approx. $489).........

I'm not Tom, but ntg3 is more profesional mic than others ntg. It's better built quality with lower self noise an more natural sound. But its suffer built in battery, so it has to be plug in device with Phantom power

What is the difference netween NTG4+ and NTG5?
@SirGambs
@SirGambs 2 жыл бұрын
They are both super cardioid 4+ is longer has a wider frequency response and more versatile because it has an internal battery so no 48v required and also buttons for filters like lowpass and highpass. You may have to adjust the gain higher as the 4+ is low in sensitivity and they sound different in the high end being that 5 seems to boost highs and that could be a good or bad thing depending on what your doing. 5 does slightly better job at rejecting from the back and thats all I got
