I came over from Panasonic GH4 with a Metabones and for my Sony a6300 I use the EF Mount Sigma 18-35 with the Sigma MC-11 adapter 95% of the time (the other 5% is with the 50mm Sony f1.8). Since I mainly shoot music videos, the noise isn't an issue, and when I need audio for a film project, I use lapels or shotguns over my subject. So it works well.

Thanks for another great video Jason. Deciding between the Sony 35mm 1.8 and sigma 16 (or 30) 1.4 mainly for video and some photos too to use with my a6300. The lack of image stabilisation is the thing stopping me pulling the trigger straight away on the sigma. Do you think warp stabilisation or something in after effects would be enough to make handheld footage with the sigma good enough for travel films for KZfaq and shot documentaries?

I recently bought a Sony a6500 and I like it so far. I picked up an adapter so that I can use my Canon EF lenses with it. I know that I must multiply the Canon full frame lenses by 1.5 crop factor. I have also bought the Sony 24mm and the 10-18mm APS-C lenses. I am getting conflicting answers. Do I have to multiply a crop factor to these or any APS-C lenses?

Hi JasonCurrently for my a6000 I have: Sigma 19mm f2.8, Neewer 35mm f1.7, Sony 50mm f1.8 and the Sony 18-105 f4.I am using the camera more and more for hybrid shooting since my daughters started orchestra. That was part of the reason I picked the 18-105 since it was "quieter" when recording them play (other was budget). What other lens would you recommend for videoing? I find other parents are asking for my vids since I like to get the whole orchestra in frame, so I want to up my video production style.

So right now i have got the 18-35 f/1.8 from sigma.. To bulky.. want to move over to the 16-70.. but the guy at the store said "dont go there, it's cheap and garbage". I am still wondering if i should give up my 18-35 for the 16-70.. more reach, lighter, smaller and more versatile. What is your take on the lens. Is it sharp enough? does it focus well enough? What can you say about it?

GO FOR IT! I was so hesitant on it and wanted to grab the 10-18 but I opted for more range since I mostly shoot at 24mm (16mm on the a6500). The lens auto focuses great and I find it to be excellent in sharpness! There were a couple times where the focus didn't get my subject but that only happened once. I have a couple videos on my channel showing the quality of it. I love it!

I beg to differ. The lenses mentioned in this video are mostly the expensive Sony/Zeiss lenses, which are fine but not necessarily the best choice for the APS-C (NEX) cameras. The two lenses I would rank as #1 are the Sigma 30mm F1.4 (as your standard 50mm type of lens) and #2 the Sigma 60 mm F2.8 for portrait work. (translates to 90 mm full frame). These have auto-focus and deliver superb quality for a very acceptable price. In case you do not mind manual focus, the Samyang/Rokinon 14 mm F2.8 lens is a great wide angle lens, very sharp. Yes, I know these are not zoom lenses, but in terms of image quality they are superior to the Sony zoom lenses. In terms of Zoomlenses we use a canon 15-85 mm F3.5 and 70-200 mm F4 with a Photodiox adapter. (All fit on the Sony A6300)

Hi. What do you think about a6300 + zeiss touit 12mm f2.8 + zeiss e24 f1.8? I want to use them for landscapes and for my hiking trips. I can buy this combo for good price. But the question is: would this combo be great even if there will not be image stabilisation on lenses and body? My previous camera was RX100. I would not be happy to pay additional cost for a6500 only for added stabilisation.

You really need to pick up the Sigma 30mm DC DN F1.4 e mount lens. With the latest firmware update from Sigma (to version 2) and the latest firmware update from Sony on my A6500 (to 1.03), I find this lens now focuses about 95% as good as my Zeiss 55mm F1.8. I ended up going with the Sigma over the Zeiss 24mm F1.8 because of the higher DxOMark scores and 1/3rd the price. Thanks again for the good video!

@travissmarion
@travissmarion 7 жыл бұрын
mark shirley No sir. Just attach the lens to your camera you want to update the firmware and go to the appropriate website for your lens. Easiest way is to Google whatever you need. For instance Google "Sigma lens firmware" or "Sony lens firmware" and follow the instructions from each website. In general you'll have to attach your camera to your laptop via the USB charging cable, launch the firmware update application, and follow the on-screen instructions. Takes only a few minutes. You should also double check the firmware of your camera as well. I'd recommend you check all the firmware of all your equipment every couple months since manufacturers are always releasing new software (aka firmware). Hope that helps!

Hi Jason :) Thanks for the Video! At the moment, with my a6300 I'm using Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2, Sigma 30mm f1.4 and the Zeiss 16-70. I do miss some longer lens though, and here is where I would like to make a suggestion for a future video. As the prices of these are much higher, I want to put some good thought into the buying process .. I went out and tried some and from my findings: - 55-210 is surprisingly sharp, but the tight aperture makes it no good as portrait lens. It's also the cheapest option - 18-200 is rubish, least sharp from anything I was testing. Didn't like it that much. - 70-200GM wow .. stunning results, but really heavy to carry around and the price is just too high (maybe would consider it if I had photo/video-graphy as a full time job, but I don't - which means that I cannot justify such purchase) - 70-200G great autofocus, reasonable f/4, OSS, but sharpness-wise it was nowhere near the GM :( Actually, I would much rather compare the image quality to the 55-210. This was rather disappointing to find out for me, as this lens is more than 3 times as expensive. - and here is where the trouble starts. Given that no Sony option fits everything I would like to have, I'm considering adapting a lens. Doing so I would like not to lose all the awesome features like eye autofocus for portraits (otherwise I can just go with the 55-210). So it's down to Sigma MC-11 and Metabones mk.IV (possibly speed booster) to be paired with either Sigma 50-100 or Sigma 70-200, Canon 70-200 (here there are the IS and non-IS options of both f/4 and f/2.8), the nice new Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 that I like, but have no idea how will it work with the adapters... Etc. simply too complicated to go through all these options as an individual - maybe you can help us in this regard :) Sorry for the long essay, but I guess I'm not the only one with such issue. Keep up the good work! Cheers!

The average shooter would be suitable equipped with that lens and the 30mm macro. And yea, while the Zeiss 1.8 32mm is noisy, the images are Zeissy cool. Great work JV.

I use the Sony fe 28mm f2 on my Sony a6500. It was a cheaper choice than the Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8. On the a6500 it is a 42mm focal length. It seems sharp with good auto focus. But should I have spent the big bucks for the 24mm?
@JasonVong
@JasonVong 6 жыл бұрын
+Mark Colvin if you're happy with the 28mm then you should be good. No need for 24mm. If you want a faster aperture, I would recommend the 30mm 1.4

Sony 35mm f1.8. Slightly less sharp than the Sigma 30mm f1.4. The 35mm has OSS, focuses much better and takes advantage of the focusing features of the Sony a6x000 line. It's compact and has the same field of view as a 50mm on a full frame, which is one of the best focal lengths to have as a photographer.

My copy does make noise when the camera is in Auto mode. It is definitely not silent and I went through two of them and both of them had this "issue." www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59701280 Other than that, the lens is optically amazing.

I keep reading about how people love their 18-105g. Should I just settle with the 50 kit lens and save up for that lens or get the 55-210 kit lens so that way I have two different lens

Mr. College Vlogs, just get the 18-105mm. You won't regret it at all. It is a better lens with v. good IQ and by using the Clear Image Zoom feature you can get the same telephoto reach as the 55-210. I own both and ran comparison tests. You gain no advantage by using the 55-210. The 18-105 is extremely versatile with a constant f.4 aperture throughout the entire focal range ( bonus!) Save up for that lens- the price has dropped since it was first released and then save up for a good used copy of the 24 1.8 ZA . You will then be very well served for low light shooting and have an extremely decent core lens kit. I came to this conclusion by owning other lenses before getting these two. These ( and maybe the 10-18) maybe all you really will ever need for the a6000 series cameras. Hope that helps.

I've seen a lot of videographers using the sigma 18-35 f1.8 with the a6500. What's your opinion on it? I feel that, as long you don't put a mic next to the lens, the sigma is a very good "budget" option. Budget it the sense that it can replace many primes focal lengths... and it's minimum focus distance even gives it semi-macro capabilities for product photography. You can current find one used for 600-650 bucks.

Great combo! My buddy who shoots weddings with me uses the 18-35mm all the time. When we capture audio separately, it's not a big deal but it's just that solo camera with the art lens, then the noise can get annoying
