I got a 70-200mm f4 for my a6300 for $800 on eBay. It was the largest leap forward in photographic capabilities that I've ever experienced. That lens is good at soooo much. Wildlife? Great. Portraits? If you have room, incredible. Background compression? Outstanding. A strong recommend even for APS-C from me

Superb video and explanation of all the various lenses- been searching for days for such a well presented and easy to understand overview! I have the kit 16-50mm on my Sony mirrorless camera (no in body stabilization) and recently added the E50F1.8OSS to my bag. Looking to add 1 more lens to complete my bag and thinking the logical choice is a good landscape lens but still not sure which one to get- any recommendations? Everyone raves about the Sigma 16mm but I would like a lens with OSS so which Sony should I choose? (plus I love SONY and would like to stick with them if poss!).

A compromise between a 55-210mm and 70-200mm would be the Sony 24-240mm, roughly £700 STG, but still packs some weight. I tried it on my A6400 but it still need support as the A6400 only has SS shot and no 5 axis. I prefer the 16-70mm f4 with A6400, a great travel combo.

With its wide f/1.8 aperture it is still good for dropping backgrounds out of focus but you are going to have stand a lot further away from your subject. If this is something that you do not want to do you may want to look at something like the 24 or 35mm primes.

@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Focal lengths do not change - angle of view changes and a 1.5 crop factor has to be applied for a full frame equivalent . It does not matter if you use a 50mm APS-C lens or a 50mm Full frame lens on an APS-C camera - the angle of view is the same.

Most of the APS-C lenses that appear in this movie are less than US $500.00. The SEL 10-18 is a little more expensive but still less than US $1,000. Sony use the E and FE to differentiate between APS-C and full frame lenses. I have not used the FE 50. I own the E 50 and the FE 55. The E 50 is a good lens. You can see a few examples captured with tis lens here: flic.kr/s/aHskamSWfX - I suspect image sharpness between the tow 50mm lenses is close. If you think you may ever upgrade to full frame you may like to consider the FE lenses otherwise I would stick with the E lenses.

André Moura - the 50 or 55 will make excellent portrait lenses while the 35 focal length offers a ‘standard’ angle of view suitable for environmental (full figure) portraiture. Both of the lenses you name are designed for full frame so although a little more expensive will allow you to transition to full frame cameras in the future. Both cameras you name have a similar image quality but the A6300 has 4K movies and is easier tot shoot action sports with lock-on AF.

Hello Mark, after much deliberation, because it is expensive, I bought the Zeiss 16-70mm for my A6000. However I have been seeing on Vlogs some severe criticisms about this lens, some reports saying that it is 'decentred' and soft in the corners. Your sample shots with this lens look far sharper than anything I have managed to achieve, should I be worried about my purchase?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 6 жыл бұрын
It is possible for a lens from any manufacturer to be 'decentred' but this does not mean all lenses in this lineup are the same. A decentered lens is a fault of manufacturer or being dropped - it is not a fault of lens design. A decentered lens would usually be significantly softer in one corner than the the other three. I would typically test this at f/11. Some photographers tilt the horizon line to a 45° angle and review the resulting image at 100% to test to see if their lens is a bad copy. Purchasing from a reputable dealer makes it easy to swap the lens out for a different sample.

@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Ayhan Çapan - if you are comparing it with any other lens you are using on an APS-C (including lenses designed for APS-C cameras) you don’t need to apply the crop factor to the aperture of only the full frame lens. If you apply it to this lens you need to apply it to the Sigma as well. You only need to apply the crop factor if you are wanting to know the full-frame equivalent visual effect. If you apply the crop factor to the FE 28 F/2 to understand that it behaves like a 42mm f/3 lens on a full frame camera (same angle of view and same depth of field) then you would also have to apply the crop factor to the 30mm f/1.4 that it behaves like a 45mm f/2.1 lens on a full-frame camera. If you don’t own a full frame camera there is not much point in doing the maths.

@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 6 жыл бұрын
Hans Zimmer - Yes you can use an FE lens without any problems on a crop sensor E-mount camera. If you use a crop sensor lens on a full-frame camera you have to switch to APS-C mode and shoot with a reduced resolution.

I like the 85 f/1.8 and always take it with me when traveling- you may find the focal length a little long in a smaller kitchen so you may also want to look at the SEL 50 f/1.8 and the 30mm Macro. The macro will enable you to capture some close-ups of the food on the plate.

All full frame cameras offer Improved dynamic range and high ISO performance and shallower depth of field at the same aperture. The mark lll camera’s offer Improved ergonomics that include more custom buttons and a multiselector (joystick), improved battery performance and dual card slots. The A7Rlll has more resolution (42.4 Megapixels). The A9 has more performance for shooting action/sports including 20 frames per second, faster read/write times and zero blackout between frames. The downside of all the full frame cameras is increased weight and size and the fact that they are more expensive (including the lenses).

I have both an a6000 and a mint FF A7R. Am tempted to purchase the lovely Sony/Zeiss 55 1.8. This would have a focal length of 1.5 x focal of 55 on the Apsc and naturally be 55 1.8 on the AR7. However, a number of lens sellers ( retail) say that the lens is not compatible with both APS-C and FF? I find their conflicting advice disturbing. The last thing I want to do is have a lens of this cost not being capable with both cameras. Can someone please provide a clear answer, thanks in advance and also, on the a6000, is it not the case that the aperture also needs to be multiplied by the crop factor. Thanks in advance.

All e-Mount lenses can move between APS-C and Full Frame cameras. APS-C lenses, however, have to be used in crop mode on the full frame cameras to avoid vignetting the image excessively.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Mark, sorry to waste more of your time ( if I see the line again, will pay the monthly sub for at least a few months!) however Tony Northrop, of quite fixed views- recently the Afghan girl and McMurry could simply have been left alone) has dogmatically stated in a discrete KZfaq video, stated without qualification that the cropping factor of mirrorless - 1.5- and m43rds must be applied to both focal length And apeture. Have no problem with the comment on focal length as having a separate Canon system with L series and Sigma Art glass and when purchased 6D body, was obvious that this comment was accurate. However how slow e.g would the Sony a6000 kit lens be if he were correct...is it only the dizzy ISO numbers that these cameras can generate that permit, already a quite slow lens, to even take a picture in failing light.

Fair enough. However KZfaq has a number of "quality" lens comparison videos comparing e.g. Sigma Art primes and Sony GM's. Also for more impoverished souls like me confined to the excellent a6000 series, the Sigma 16 1.4 (and maybe others) could be worth visiting. Btw: without doubting the quality of Sony FF's , the pricing of the A9 and siblings is financially marginlising many shooters who , absent high entry costs, may otherwise be tempted. Fwiw: pricing alone will see many keen shooters remain in the Apsc format.

The A6000 is Sony’s best selling Alpha camera but most enthusiasts skip the 6300 and 6500 for the full frame cameras (driven by pier pressure, camera reviews and status). I suspect many of these users don’t use the full frame advantage most of the time (the resolution of the R or the fast and reliable AF of the 9). The full frame cameras and GM lenses have, however, been remarkably successful for Sony and, due to the size of this dominant market sector, have not marginalised this market. The good news is that, now the full frame system reaches maturity, Sony have promised another APS-C camera and some lenses in 2019. I personally believe that as sensors continue to improve APS-C will become more attractive than Full Frame - especially when the weight of the camera bag will be half that of the full frame kit.

Varun Dhaka - a 35 prime on an APS-C camera is close to a 50mm equivalent. It’s always important to add the word ‘equivalent’ because focal length doesn’t actually change - just the angle of view when the sensor size changes.

@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 6 жыл бұрын
It is all relative. f/4 is the widest aperture of a telephoto lens that has a maximum aperture of f/4 and may be better than another zoom lens that has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or f/6.3 and telephoto end of the zoom range. This is why I highlight lenses such as the 50, 55, and 85 f/1.8 prime lenses.

There are multiple tests and users claiming that the 16-70 f/4 produces equivalent or even inferior quality to the 16-50 kit lens. So if you’re going to say it provides “better image quality” then it would be nice for you to supply some information that supports your claim. Or explicitly state that that is only your opinion.
