I think think the only negative to the sigma 16mm is no image stablization for cameras without ibis

Thanks Hybrid Shooter-I enjoy your rational approach . There seems to be a re-evaluation in the quality and usefulness of the 16-50mm kit lens. I bought the 18-105 mm to 'replace' the kit as my general lens but I do miss the 16-50's smaller form factor ( which was why I went for an aps-c camera, in the first place.) I just bought the Sigma 16mm1.4 lens and it is similar in size to the 18-105mm, but feels noticeably lighter in use. These two might be what I take for travelling as they would cover most needs ( day and night) , especially when implementing Clear Image Zoom for telephoto on the 18-105mm. I do have the 24mm F1.8 Zeiss prime (I picked up a good used copy). It is also a terrific lens and quite compact with some macro- like capabilities. Happy New Year to you!

Great video. It would be interesting to do a video on the current options for telephoto on this camera, which you mention towards the end. Since you also use MFT, I think a lot of folks would welcome lens videos on that system from you if you get into them. Cheers!

Thank you, I unfortunately don't have any telephoto lens for A6500 and I haven't even tested any, there is just 55-210mm and full frame lenses. There will be pleny of videos about MFT lenses once my G9 arrives, hopefully next week.

Great vid. I use my Sony 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8 on my a6000 and NEX-7 for 90% of the time to cover my needs. Looking to get something for the longer end. I have a question....How did you install a non Sony app on the camera for the time lapse video? I thought only PlayMemories apps can be installed?

Another option is the Canon 18 - 135 mm EFS f3.5 - 5.6 w/adapter. It's a bit on the heavy side, but the a6500's light weight and the Canon's reasonable price, makes it worth while.

For a universal lens I would much prefer native lens, because of the full AF capabilities, communication with camera etc...

My Ideal lenses are Sony 35mm, unbelievable quality, amazing background blur, F 1.8 , literally the king of portrait in my opinion when in comes to the a6500, although not very flexible it was my first lens and allowed me to understand distance, especially in video. 18 to 105mm f4 is amazing for video, not huge, very good range and f4 isn't that bad unless you are in a very dark environment. and then the sony kit lens , small and compact, easy to take anywhere, more discreet, the problem is there are good and bad kit lenses , so you gotta get lucky..

Great overview... I currently have a panasonic G85 setup, been considering switching to Sony a6500 with the Sigma 18-35. Mainly due to the autofocus as I primarily shoot myself in talking head type videos. Is the autofocus just as good with the Sigma lenses as the Sony lenses? Have you had any overheating issues? I'm planning on using the open memories tweak to extend the video limit for longer shoots. Thanks!

Thank you, with 16mm F1.4 the autofocus is as good as with sony lens. With 18-35mm the AF is still excellent, but you won't be able to use in-camera mic or shotgun mic due to the focusing noise. I have never had any overheating issues at all, even when shooting in 35 degrees Celsius.

Peter Cerrato Sigma 18-35 is not the best option for video, as said due to autofocus noise. I think better option is to buy Sigma 30/1.4, or Sony 10-18/4, or even Sony 18-105/4 because this lens is so god damn convenient.

Thanks... But I'm looking for a good all arounder fast lens ... The Sony 24-70 2.8 looks great, but not for $2200 :-) ... I record audio externally mainly, so the noise shouldn't be a big issue.

I have Sony A6300 and looking for sharpness, overall, flexible zoom: Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS (not great references) or Canon EF 16-35mm f/4,0 L IS USM (not so sharpness for sony) or Sony FE 24-105mm f/4,0 G OSS SEL (crop factor). Sigma 18-35mm f/1,8 DC HSM Art is great but too big. What is your recommendation from my proposal. Thank you.

Those are all very different lenses, so first of all you need to figure out what focal range do you need.

Second of all, I bought a a6500 and I’m thinking about getting the sony za tessar 55mm f1.8, and I was wandering whats are your thoughts about that lense, cause i think that for 600€/$ (aprox.) it could be an interesting choice, even if is for full frame, I’ve seen some shots taken with an a6500 and looks amazing, but I want, if you are able, to know whats your opinion on that lense and if it’s worth the price against the 50mm oss f1.8 apc from sony. Zeiss 55mm F1.8 is an excellent lens, very sharp, but you won't be able to see much difference in comparison to 50mm F1.8 OSS, and at 50mm optical stabilization in 50mm F1.8 OSS will also be useful.

Hello. I am thinking to buy the a6500 in April. Should I buy this camera or should I wait for the successor? I already have the Sigma 18-35 and I'm thinking to take the Sigma MC-11 Adapter too if I buy the a6500. My main purpose is Fashion Photography and Filmmaking. What do you suggest?

At the moment there isn't any information available about A6500 successor, so it depends on whether you like A6500 as it is, or whether you can wait unspecified amount of time. For your purposes A6500 and 18-35mm is very solid combination.

Thank you, whether the 30mm or 16mm is more suitable for you depends entirely on your preferences, there is unfortunately no E-mount version of 18-35mm you need to use canon version and adapter.

The Hybrid Shooter It's strange, because I keep googling 18-35mm and I happen to find a few sites which sell it as an E mount, slightly more expensive though. Anyways, I might get it in a mid-far future, I think ill buy the 30mm 1.4, mainly for street photography, recording gigs and some gimball shots.

As you already have the mc11 what about the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM? Fairly good sharpness in the centre wide open. AF super fast on my 6300 so assume the same on 6500. Can be bought in UK secondhand as low as £65 from Wex.

The Hybrid Shooter I'll see what mine does and get back to you. I've owned two 50mm OSS models and the 55mm Zeiss. Image quality on cropped bodies very similar after f2.5 so it is indeed very good value.

You're welcome, Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS is a good choice, as a third lens for A6000 since it is stabilized (APS-C version amzn.to/2qtS6FA ). If you want good shotgun mic, this is probably the best choice: amzn.to/2m1zQht

You would need some kind on XLR device for that mic, it is not very practical for A6000.

You mentioned that IBIS is less effective at longer FLs. That is definitely not my experience based on the informal testing / usage I've done. Have you tested that or is there third party testing that points in this direction?

I meant that at longer focal lengths in-body IS is less effective than lens IS. It is generally accepted fact, for example Panasonic claims same IS advantage measured in stop with IBIS only and with IBIS + IS, because the lens IS just compensates for smaller IBIS effect at longer focal lengths.

Hey did you ever get the 18-135 lens for the a6500...i just bought the a6500 body only...going to buy the 16-50 small kit lens for it but wondering how good is the 18-135....also is the 16-50 good for video? that is what id like to use it for during travel because of its size

No, I didn't, I bought Panasonic G9 which I use with 12-60mm lens for those purposes. 16-50 is a decent lens, the sharpness is OK, but it has a lot of kit lens look with low contrast and not the best color reproduction.

Thank you, Fujifilm is more of enthusiast choice, they make cameras with great handling and looks, but the performance, is not quite up there yet (autofocus, no IBIS, video quality etc.). Sony and Panasonic are more pragmatic choices.

IMO never, with the introduction of Panasonic full frame S1R, I expect Sony and Panasonic to dominate the mirrorless camera market for a long time. There is very little change that I will be able to review Fuji products and I will not invest into Fuji system.

That would be around 35mm FF eqv. at the widest angle, therefore not suitable for all-round use on A6000 series. Tamron has announced 28-70mm F2.8, it should be available this year.

Do yo want a 50mm equivalent? A 50mm lens on an apsc body would be 75mm equivalent. Is the Sigma 50mm for the a7 series?

Yes, I want 50mm for APS-C, so 75mm Full Framce euqivalent. If you mean that Sigma 50mm F1.4 DC DN, that will be APS-C lens, so will only be able to use it in crop mode on A7.

It is reasonably good in low light, although I have no experiences with neon photography, but it is still good choice in general.

The new 18-135mm is not a lens for video like the 18-105mm, there is no power zoom, I prefer that, I do photography, that’s the raison I never be interested to get the 18-105mm (but it is a superb optical range). One thing I hope is to get a much better optical quality then 18-105mm! The 100 less gr. is welcome with the 18-135mm and also shorter then the 18-105mm. Yessss!

Your numerous shots with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 do make me a little nervous. Perhaps I need to get my hands on one of those ;-). My favourite lens for the A6500 btw is the Sony SEL24F18Z. Expensive, yes, but the best lens for taking unconspicious photos. And I am a 35mm guy on my full frame cameras, so this is the one for me on APS-C.

That Sigma 16mm F1.4 really provides Full Frame results on APS-C, it is one most favorite lenses of all time. 24mm F1.8 is also very good lens, but I have that focal length covered by Sigma 18-35mm F1.8.

I use the 24mm Zeiss mainly for photography. Rarely for video but it comes in handy when i need autofocus and audio, and the focus motor of the Sigma 18-35 1.8 keeps on driving me mad 🙄. Actually, I never really made a true picture quality comparison between both. I am happy with the results from both lenses with a big plus for the Sony-Zeiss in terms of usability.

I like to use that one if I just carry one camera, some lenses and accessories, if I need to carry more stuff I use this one : bit.ly/2ne86HK both are well made, very reasonably priced and in my experience quite durable.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to get good results without suitable lenses.

This was helpful, I think 6500 is too pro for me.. might just upgrade to 6300

Richard Lai a6300 user here. I'll suggest you go to a6500. You'll regret later as the touch focus and ibis is very important. OR you could wait for a newer model in upcoming few months.

I don't think that A6500 successor will be announced soon, there aren't even any rumors about development out yet.

Agree with Jun Yew- skip the a6300 and get the a6500 . It is a great camera and one that will serve you well for a long time . Buying the a6300 is an expensive compromise. I went from the a6000 to the a6500 and it was definitely worth the upgrade $$$. I wasn't tempted by the a6300 when it came out because it did not have IBIS. Build quality is much better in a6500 as well.
