I was able to use this as a personal item for spirit so im sold. It was very full but not overstuffed btw. Its so good.

I have the Motherlode jr and it qualifies as a carryon. I’ve used it on a plane and it fits in the overhead compartment. Not under the seat.

This is such an excellent review! Especially the rugs LOL : - D Thank you! I would buy the jr. version of this bag for international travel in a heartbeat if not for the orange interior. I even LIKE the color orange, but it just feels like TOO MUCH. 🔥😎🔥Hopefully I can persuade myself to get over it. It's such a drag when the curse of the almost-perfect item strikes again!

@@ItsTheKellys Totally get that! The all-black interior of the black Cotopaxi Allpa is one of the cons of that very cool bag for me. I just wish the mother lode had something neutral like a pale gray, blue, or tan so it wouldn't clash with my clothes! At this point I'm seriously considering sewing my own luggage! lol!

Nothing separate technically, but you can put your shoes in a shoe cube and put them in the mesh pocket inside, in the main compartment, or I forgot the mention the back pocket for laptops, which could fit flat shoes!

Ah! We each did a backpack and a carry on roller for our safari (1 week safari and one week beach). I can tell you for sure, what I learned, was I never left the safari vehicle and shoes didn’t matter as much as I thought! I haven't traveled very much, but my son has decided to go to college next Fall across the country and I already booked 4 trips before the end of the year, I am trying to figure out the carry on / personal item bag. I want to keep things as simple as possible and maximize space. The whole time I was watching this video I was wondering is this a personal item and you answered my question : )

That’s great! Congrats to your son! And how exciting that you already booked trips to go visit him. I think this bag would be great for you, or a 21 to 22 inch roller would also be OK if you want to bring a backpack with you as a personal item.

TEN MINUTES IN IM SOLD! I’ve been looking for a bag to take to Peru for multiple months. I have a huge backpack from Douchebags but its way to big to carryon and with the chaos going on with airlines I dont want to risk my bag being lost. I never understood the hype about this bag- it honestly kinda looks like a school bag, doesn’t look like a typical backpacking-type luggage bag, but omg as soon as you put those rugs in I was sold 😂

It’s honestly so amazing as a carryon. I’m usually a huge fan of hard sided carryon luggage but some trips you need a backpack. This would be perfect for Peru! Especially if you buy some alpaca blankets like I did 😂😂

Yes to the rugs! lol ; - ) The school bag look is actually a selling point for me. I want to look as little like a tourist as possible, so the school bag look and incredible compressibility of this bag are huge pluses for me!

Tossed up between this model and the Jr for a 3 week in Italy and France. Some of the flights have a strict 55x35x25cm requirement (air france mostly). Did you have an opportunity to test it against these size limits? Its like technically .3 inches too large (tall and wide) but having the extra space would sure be handy. Love your videos!

I have never seen the junior, nor do I own it. I suppose it depends on how full you plan on packing it. When it’s packed to full capacity, it may not fit, but if it’s squishable, you would be fine. Air France can weigh your bag, more than they care about measurements

The junior seems the more popular but you lose an inch and a half, and yes AF is tight, they put you through the sizer and weight constraints for carryon and personal items. This bag is sooo close but just over but I want to love it. Enjoy your travels ! Your videos are so helpful !

I have this bag and the cubes, and an old school Motherlode original from wayyy back in 2006, still holding strong. Question? In the video you sa8d all of your clothes fit into the medium cube? How? Anyway. I live my weekender and my old school big one. You can fit so much in both, but like, man if you stuff it, I don't want to carry that. Just so heavy. I rigged a hip belt to make it more comfortable for walking. *Side nite I did use the weekender that you reviewed here in Europe for 9 1/2 weeks in late October 😍

Yes, sometimes a backpack is just too heavy, yet sometimes it’s more appropriate than a roller. I’m having a backpack vs roller series coming out soon. As for the packing cube, I pack light with merino wool items I can re-wear because they are a magic performance fabric, and then I pack a capsule wardrobe. I have always been good with a medium packing cube :) of course I wear my heaviest items on the plane. I’ve done a few videos on this as well 💜

I just ordered this bag and loved the review. EXCEPT I would never put my documents in that outside pocket. It would be way too easy for a pick pocketer to grab them!

Have you used the Peak Design Travel backpack? I'm trying to decide between that & the Mother Lode Jr. (I think the larger Mother Lode won't fit under the seats in the plane?) Wish they'd make models WITHOUT the laptop compartments. It's wasted space for me.

It’s likely too big to use as a “personal item” because it’s the same size as most carry on luggage. You will have to check with your airline’s measurements for a personal item. Maybe the junior size will be better

Hello! Appreciate your review. I currently own the older model and it performed well during my 30 day trek through Europe. However my only gripe was that I felt the material was heavy without it being filled. Do you see a significant difference in WEIGHT vs. the new one that has a different material?

I just got rid of my old one so I can’t weigh them each to let you know, but I don’t think I noticed. I do know that when I pack it full, it’s definitely heavy on my back and makes me wish I had my roller 😂 but that’s 20 lbs on my back, ya know?

I felt the same way. I have the smaller version but it felt really heavy. My husband have the bigger one. I used it traveling to Las Vegas. Since then, I have not used it because it was so heavy on my back. Maybe because I'm only 5 ft tall and petite, it's been 3 years ago. Now I am debating to keep it or sell it.

Thanks for sharing! How much does an empty bag weigh? Does it have a waist strap/belt? This feature eases the burden in carrying a full- packed bag in your back.

It has a chest strap in front, but not a waist strap. I believe it is just under 4 pounds when empty! 🥰

I purchased this for a trip to europe (9 days) we will be flying delta to ireland. Then aer lingus from dublin to paris and back from Paris to Dublin. Any experience on those cheap international airlines? I want to use this bag, but don’t want to be screwed on Aer Lingus lol

I haven’t flown that specific airline (I don’t think) but I used this backpack in at least 40 countries on random airlines. You should be fine! Have so much fun!

When we go to europe we will each bring one as our carryon. It’s too big for a personal item. I’ll have my Beis Fanny pack as my personal item most likely :)

There is also a mother lode jr. that's 19.5 inches tall. Maybe a better height for kids (and a great size for them to grow into for international flight carry on limits someday. : - )

The one featured in this video is a carry on size (similar to a roller bag size, just in your back) and then I bring a purse as a personal item. They do have a “junior” version that is smaller that might work as a personal item. Ryan air is way too strict and crazy, not even the junior version of this bag fits on that airline :-/ (it’s still 9cm too tall)

To be honest there is zero difference except for the size, and the junior is still too big to be a personal item, because it’s 19.5” tall. So I won’t be getting one. But knack has similar ones in personal item size

It’s definitely too big to fit on another bag, the bag would tip over. When fully packed, it’s the size of a typical carry on suitcase.

I wonder if it might work to jury rig a pass-through sleeve by attaching a lightweight panel to four of the compression strap connectors closest to the back. The Jr. size of the bag is 19.5x14x9.
