"It's frightening to think with modern medicine and all the technique available to them...they can't really help you..In the old days, you know, you were better off because nowadays, they are all specialists.Everyone's becoming better and better at less and less ....Eventually someone's going to be superb....at nothing"
This was taken from an interview on the Aspel & Co show in 1987 - a year before his suicide in April 1988.
His words from 20 yrs ago ring SO true today.
After 40 yrs of him suffering with stomach, intestinal complaints, the doctors still were not able to help him at all and he spent every day in chronic and severe pain.
His words here vent his frustration and such a modern view today

l think this was the interview when Loretta Swit fondly hugged Ken at the very end and he seemed to appreciate it. It is sad he was alone, frantic with pain in his final days and hours. He was my favourite wit, wordsmith, hilarious raconteur. He died 32 years ago. Shall never forget him.

He was a very troubled man with some peculiar quirks. It is sad, but regrettably not surprising that he died alone. He was probably his own worst enemy. His proposal of marriage to Joan Sim is a classic. I can't findvtge exact words he used, but the gist eas "Why don't _we_ get married? I mean, nobody else is going to want either of us?"

@@celsius418 he suffered from severe stomach problems going from doctor to doctor, cramping crippling pains, so many doctors and specialist could find nothing wrong, multiple tests and examinations causing more problems and pain for him endure so putting him onto strong painkillers and barbiturates to which he became addicted. Causing more problems to his medical dilemma as they caused more pains as they went through his system . This went on for years. Still no answer to the original cause for the condition the pains got worse and no one could help him and his depression deepened. This is just on part of what was going on his life according to his journals .. His last words in his diary , with the remaining barbiturates , were "oh what's the point"

@@MuppetTrailRanch Thanks for that. Since asking I’ve watched a Reputations Special about his life and career, and they touch on the subject, but they don’t say much more than he had stomach ulcers, problems with his farmer Gyles, and IBS. There is no mention of his issues with doctors, but they mention his depression, his use of barbiturates, and his desire to end it all. I find the connection between one’s mental health and stomach problems to be fascinating, combined with barbiturates it sounds like he was caught in a vicious circle. Now I’m off to find a copy of his diary.... you’ve inspired me to find out more about him. Thanks again

@@ftswarbill I think this is one of those moments, but then this seems like the 70s or 80s and specialists now are brilliant in my opinion, things like heart surgery or skin specialists actually know how the body works and what they are talking about. Because at its best, comedy is the last bastion of free speech. This can be a wonderfully entertaining way of delivering a sound message to people that leaves them thinking and passing the message on by retelling the "funny". Most entertainers/comedians are liberal and have a liberal agenda. Penn Jillette is one of those rare Libertarian entertainers. So is Jon Voight. But Voight gets hammered by the left, whereas Jillette seems to be getting away with it...because he's in the being funny business. Being funny gives an opportunity to say potentially libelous things without the fear of being sued, by claiming; "It was just a joke, I'm an entertainer!" - although politicians (some) are trying to get around that. Even today, in some places, entertainers have been arrested and through history some even executed for their jokes. Comedy is a serious business.

Unfortunately, some people interpret this stuff as actual anti-intellectual bullshit these days. Kenneth was a great follower of the experts in many fields. He's joking here. It's a bit sad that some people take this stuff the wrong way and fail to see the intended irony. It's a bit like when people start quoting Borat/Pub Landlord because they "tell the truth". @@gabrielconstantingarvvan2518 I strongly suspect it is you "that you tinny little mind can't fathom". To revere the medical profession is an admission that you have an inability to take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing and need to rely on it ! Me saying "I don't need it" probably does sound stupid, but that's more to do with your inability to grasp the concept. A dentist told me I needed 5 fillings 40 years ago, I missed the appointment for the fillings, time elapsed, and when (out of panic) I eventually registered with an alternate dentist, they informed me that I did not need any treatment, or fillings, at all? I have all my own teeth, no problems, Ph balanced, and the only fillings I have were put there when I was a child ? !!

@ FreyaBlack he was truly a legend and now when i watch the Carry on films i think of him in a different way to what i did before, He's brilliant its the same with Sid James he was a troubled man also but when he was on the films he looked so happy and care free.
