Brent often talks about historic moldings for Federal and Georgian houses but what about houses built after 1900. Especially between 1900 and 1950. In this video, Brent breaks down moldings from more recent eras and shares what the best moldings are for your home.

Georgian mouldings are impressive and beautiful, but not necessarily practical or appropriate for most people. Glad to see some highlighting of slightly more practical options for mouldings.

Is there a way I can enhance the trim around the windows and doors without removing it? ❤ I love your videos. I’m addicted. ❤

Depends on what you have. A backband on your trim may work. Good luck.

From a practicality standpoint, I think a picture molding would be a good idea in a modern home. Personally, I cringe every time I think of a nail going through a L5 finish wall or a sculpted wall just to hang a picture.

Don’t worry abouy it. “Level 5” sounds top notch, but it’s just an extra coat of mud all over. It’s not proper plaster wall like they do in Europe or south America. It’s not even a veneer plaster. Pure marketing to make substandard construction look high-end, that’s it.

I have a condo built (originally as apartments, fixtures and finishes and cabinets were all builder-grade) in 1971, and we have real small moldings. I’m replacing like-for-like generally, any time I need to replace moldings; I want the inside of the condo to be more efficient, better designed, and better quality (but not the beat available quality; this is not a fine building in any way). My personal taste when it comes to contemporary design is Scandinavian-influenced, and I also love that people are now really appreciating the whacky design and interiors happening in the 1970s, so I’ve decided to make nods to late-60s and 1970s modern design where I can, while still keeping it light and fresh in here and trying to avoid anything too trendy. I love the craftsman moldings and would love to plus up the chunky ones in my parents’ California Bungalow, but they just wouldn’t be right in my condo!

Our '39 house is a mutt. It may be in the period revival era but there are echoes of A&C in the stairwell balustrades and bottom post, and echoes of art deco in the 3-tier stepped door and window moldings. Overall very simple/clean yet bold because of the molding size. Not any hint of the ornate examples shown here.

Extremely well analysed and presented. Was the reduction in scale and presence of mouldings caused by or enabled smaller scale houses? I presume the former. The overall reduction in buildings standards (an overwhelming over simplification, I accept) also resulted in the use of softwoods for visible features. In my view, as hard as one tries, softwood only achieves acceptability when it is painted. Hardwoods are obviously much more costly but, where the natural timber look is desired, I would urge people to take, if budget necessitates, longer to afford and install hardwoods, rather than rush with softwood.

At the :30 mark, there is a photo of a sample wall of cornices. I would love to see drawings of the cornices on the sample wall so I can make them and add them to my sample wall. Where can I find drawings of these wonderful cornices?

I have a house built in 1989 with a sunken living room but the ceiling is 8’ where it is sunken and 7 1/2’ everywhere else, so it feels low. What kind of molding would help the ceilings appear taller? Will wainscoting make it look lower or higher?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Жыл бұрын
Hmm, that's a tough one. Watch my video on putting moldings in an 8' room. That should help. Good luck.

@@BrentHull Thanks Brent. I’ll hunt it down. I keep thinking combination of wainscoting and crown molding will make it look classier, but want to be careful because of those low ceilings.

I love to watch your videos because there's something about historic architecture that I love I would love to one day own a rundown Boston Victorian house and restore it back to its True Glory anyway God bless you and your family in Jesus name amen and don't forget Jesus loves you so much that he died for mine and yours sins

I’d say 75% of British housing stock built after ww2 uses 3/4” x2” architrave and 3” skirting. Either pencil round or chamfered. Even higher value houses often have over looked the mouldings

Buddy new homes here in Nor Cal; door rough framed 3 9/16th so try and convince a GC yeah let’s bump those out and change all this around? Drug Test would be the 1st words outta his mouth! Having said that I hv devolved a budget friendly craftsman style that most homeowners can afford? I actually picked it up from Spencer Lewis @ Inside Carpentry (YT) u outta watch the most recent and some others ? These homes a 1 mill plus some 3 ? I know u do huge ones however with this coming market & Bafoon who is running us into the ground u might want to lower your sights and grab a big piece of the home custom market? Preaching to the choir right? I so hv learned to enjoy your videos and would love to just be an apprentice on one of those jobs! Take care, God Bless & take the family to Church!
