Maybe put the bow drill grommet on the side thats visible when the knife is in the sheath. Cause if I'm using the knife to hold down the drill I want the knife in the sheath for safety while working the bow with my other hand.
@westcoastwoodsman2289 Жыл бұрын
That is a good idea. I flip the knife over and put it back in the sheath while trying to use the bow. Doesn't fit great but still covers the blade. To be honest I haven't had a lot of success with the bow method of fire starting. I live in a very rainy part of the world so it's pretty much a last resort.
@BretCahill Жыл бұрын
@@westcoastwoodsman2289 I can understand that. Bow drill will always be special to me because it was the first method I was successful at when I was learning fire making techniques.

Really good. I'm an electrical contractor, so I have no shortage of electrical tape, but I watched and went to the store and bought an inner tube. Great idea. So practical. Also the way you did the cord with the plastic keeper. Very practical.

Thank you. I just watched your "Another Get Home Bag, But It's My Bag" video again and it has motivated me to try and do one of my own.

RUS: Если добавлено огниво, то вместо паракорда можно использовать джутовую или пеньковую веревку 2-3 мм в диаметре, её можно использовать в качестве растопки. Еще и стоит раз в 5 дешевле, рулона хватит на много лет.

Hi, silly question here, but what is the pipe plug used for? I love all the other mods and will be using them on my Mora as well as my niece's. Thanks for the video!
@westcoastwoodsman22894 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. The pipe plug is used as a block for the top of the spindle in a bow drill set up. I made a short demonstration video today and posted it.

I know its just a cheap Mora but idk about grinding a divot in the spine. Just use the knife to cut a notch into a stick and you can do the same thing without comprimising the tip of your knife that you seem to be building a survival kit on...

Finally found this again!!! Was absolutely positive I subscribed the first time I watched this and saved this specific video to do this later but alas the YT gods decided to make me work hard for it... Over 2 weeks to find this video again!! So happy I did (ended up watching way to many with people using electrical tape for everything ~ when electrical tape is in a vehicle wrapped around anything in an emergency bag for say 2-3 years when YOU decide it cannot wait any longer to checked because husband won't ~ and the tape has slid (melted) and left sticky residue that even the most OCD clean everything person cannot remove my search brought me to the best video ever ~ yours).
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I'm not a fan of electrical tape either. It makes a real mess if it gets too hot in the sun or wet in heavy rain.

Great Mods !🎉 What brand of Fire Steel is that? Perfect fit. I want to get the same
@westcoastwoodsman22892 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm almost certain it's a generic Coghlan 1005 fire steel. I'm in Canada, so I just get ferro rods from the dollar store or Canadian Tire. I think the fire steels are all made in the same place. They all have the same dimensions, just the names on the packaging are different.
@tagTEAM533 жыл бұрын
Is that 3/8 inch inner diameter for the clear PVC tube? And what width of firesteel do you use to fit well? Thanks so much!
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
Sry Max, I missed this question somehow. The tube is 3/8 inside diameter and th firesteel is just slightly smaller than that so I would guess 5/16th. Wish I would have caught this sooner. I hope your mods worked out anyway.

I like the craftsmanship. What's the brass plug for?
@westcoastwoodsman22894 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The brass plug is added so you can use the knife handle as your block when using a bow drill. I will edit the video and add that information soon.

Johnny, I made a short demonstration video that explains the plug a little better. Again thank you for bring it to my attention that it was not explained in this video.

I had the same idea a log time ago, but I found I had to slice horizontally all the way down the tubing or the firesteel got trapped in the tube

I've been able to get the fire steel out when i have needed it but it does get to be a bit of a struggle sometimes.

Instead of the bicycle tubing can you not use heat shrink wrap"?
@westcoastwoodsman22892 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! You definitely could use large shrink wrap. I like to use bicycle tube because you could use it to make bands or burn it if needed. Use whatever you have handy to fasten the fire steel to the sheath. Its most important thing is to have the fire steel attached and with the knife when you need it.
@mybusiness12543 жыл бұрын
which ferro rod are you using here
@westcoastwoodsman22893 жыл бұрын
Just a regular Coghlans type ferro rod. The handle that Coghlans uses is a generic type that most of the "cheaper" ferro rods come with. They all nest nicely with the Mora sheath.

I added a ferro rod, duct tape, a heap of paracord, fishing hooks, water purification tablets, fishing line and more. It was far to chunky so I removed it all. I now have a bare sheath again. I did my spine at 90 degrees.

Why doesn't your handle hole go through both sides of the handle?
@westcoastwoodsman22893 жыл бұрын
It is meant to be used as a block for a bow drill fire making set up. I have a video link in the description. Video isn't great but it demonstrates the idea.

@georgenewlands97603 жыл бұрын
The butyl rubber of the inner tube can also be shredded and used as tinder...you obviously have the fire cord but you can just use bike inner tube to attach the ferro rod to the sheath for emergency use.
@alessandrofirmani7003 жыл бұрын
Compromise the strenght of your blade so you can list of a pot of the fire like you could with a stick? Mmmmmm no thanks, i sugest a hairband in the belt holder to secure the knife to the sheath, verynice video thanks
@westcoastwoodsman22893 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I like the hair band idea. I will give it a try. I suppose the notch does compromise blade strength but I haven't found it to be an issue for me yet. Ymmv as I do baton lightly on occasion but I don't usually use my belt knife for heavy work. I hope you find the other mods useful.
@MrAlexH1991 Жыл бұрын
I think I’d rather just use a sturdy forked stick or limb to get a pot outta the fire. I get that you have your reasons, but to me personally? Idk man, I just don’t like the idea of jimping the tip of my knife.
