It happened. Ilia Topuria dethroned the king. Now the question is, did featherweight just receive its fourth consecutive all-time great champion?

I feel like something I didn't really think about is that Volk doesn't have a particularly damaging low kick. He's not Buakaw who's going to kill your leg if you're there for it. The power differential in the exchanges really did feel like it was building to Volk getting killed.
@seanc7990
@seanc7990 3 ай бұрын
exactly, I didn't realize that volk would be so harmless in the exchanges, his leg kicks didnt move Ilia's legs at all while Ilia's kicks nearly took volk off his feet, And his lead leg kicks were basically just a waste of energy as they didn't move Ilia back at all. His jab was good but he got KO before he could build off it

I remember Max saying that during the Embedded previous to their first rematch, and I think a lot of people (including Volk's team, as seen in Embedded too) thought he was just trolling. His lead low kick is more of a setup for his game rather than a weapon. Usually he throws it with little torque just to make the opponent react and go from there. I know, I know, I'm not saying anything new. Just that maybe Max's comments were being actually honest rather than him being a sore loser at the time.

I know everyone has a boner for topuria rn because he has been looking so good but I doubt he will have a long title reign. Does the thing where he doesn’t jab as well against southpaws (only to the body kinda?) and his takedown defense is good but not great. I could see evloev, Allen, and Yair all giving him serious problems.
@TheRulersBack18
@TheRulersBack18 3 ай бұрын
always better to bet against fighters having a long reign, so that's a safe bet. i don't think evloev or allen cause him serious problems, but yair's got a puncher/kicker's chance against anyone. hopefully he sits in the division and we can find out

@@TheRulersBack18 I dunno, if Bryce mitchel can take topuria down twice I can imagine evloev getting him down a lot more. Allen is a bit of a reach and would probably get koed banging with him I have to admit.

@TheRulersBack18 3 ай бұрын
@@paragon1782 we just don't see evloev the same way, which is fine. mitchell got him down once and it was basically a sneaky one after topuria had stuffed a bunch. i think evloev is obviously physically superior to mitchell, but i don't think he's gonna be taking topuria down repeatedly and keeping him down

Can we stop with the "Mirab is a phenomenon" take? By all that we know, Mirab is statistically likely to be on EPO. If sprinters suddenly went from running 100 meters in 10 seconds to hitting a sub 8 second run, that isn't a phenomenon that's a new pharmacist at work. He is just on the Lasha Talakhadze juice.

Not sure what distribution has been reasonably well constructed and tested to inform us Mirab is statistically likely to be on EPO. There’s not really a ton of hard science to suggest who is and isn’t abusing PEDs with a high degree of certainty, and there likely won’t be anytime soon. I’m not saying it’s not a reasonable accusation, but the certainty with which it is claimed is based on a misinterpretation of the available information.
@utkarsh2746

Based on statistics. As I pointed out when the 100m sprint record suddenly goes from around the 10 second mark to a sub 8 second mark then it is almost always a new pharmacist at work. Not my theory, I'm just borrowing the words of Victor Conte. If anyone knows enough about this stuff it is Conte. Also, I brought up Lasha to remind people that Georgia has some of the best juice in the market today. Georgia and whatever the Italian team is on. Karlos Nassar and Lasha have by all accounts surpassed Team China in their "supplementation" @@ExtremelyAverageMonster

What i find annoying is when someone like Luke Thomas does a "i told ya so" and the, "welcome to the topuria era", as if this means someone doesnt lose their next fight or the one after. 😂 Im curious what gameplan we'll see, if/when he ends up losing, to defeat him. I wonder if a Jai Herbert height has a good chance? Or, someone who can wrestle the heck out of him for long stretches. Either way, the dude looked good as hell. Volk also should have taken more time off. Both of these things can be true.

he's a (just turned) 27yr old undefeated guy who's already beaten a ohko artist, an excellent grappler, and the best all-around fighter this side of islam makhachev...and none of them were all that tough for him. he's also shown a chin, along with his own great grappling and boxing, so it's understandable for luke to say that
@shettywap
@shettywap 3 ай бұрын
@TheRulersBack18 you can look at someone's assets and their achievements and still find it unnecessary to say, "Welcome to the such and such era." That sort of thing has been proven wrong so many times, it becomes a useless adage. I understand where it comes from. I would just expect someone as knowledgeable as Luke to not fall into it. He's a pretty verbose character, so it trips me out when he sounds like a 2010 sound bite. Lol
