Dude I cried in the theater when he saved JoJo. He was definitely the best character in the movie next to Hitler himself and had the perfect blend of seriousness and absurdity to make him both relatable and funny.

@@MagronesBR2 lol, but Klenzendorf has tons of condecorations but never wore an armband or a collar insignia. So he was not a member of the party. He was a good soldier, a proud member of the wehrmacht but not a Nazi. assuming he was 45-50 in 1945 he could even be a WWI war veteran.

He’s not inept. He’s burnt out. He is aware of what is going on around him and is powerless to do a damn thing. A tragically heroic character in his own right

Yeah he has a dank destruction badge on his right shoulder, an Iron Cross First class and Second class, as well as a Wound badge in either gold or bronze (can’t quite tell). Meaning he most likely was awarded all those at once. Captain K ran at a Tank with a anti-Tank grenade and destroyed the tank all while being injured by the explosion. I think that’s also why he connects with Jojo and grows closer with him after he has the grenade accident.

Probably openly disaffected by the direction of the regime and its war effort, but too decorated in combat to imprison or execute without a good enough reason. So instead he was demoted to homefront duties.

Captain K may not be the best soldier, but he is the best of men. Rosie told him to promise her to make JoJo included and look after him. He does this with his life by saving JoJo. What a gem.

Interesting Captain K is a recipient of the Iron Cross Second Class, only worn when awarded (Ribbon on the button) An the Iron Cross First Class as displayed on his Uniform. Pretty Cool Character.

A small detail I noticed is when captain K eats an apple, a classic villain / bad guy trope in cinema, he immediately throws it away. It's a small representation of his character, where he accepts and is a part of an evil regime, but personally he detests it and wants it gone (throwing the bad apple away). Afterwards giving the most casual and unenthusiastic heil hitler in the entire scene, and the most realistic speech a Wehrmacht officer can give to children in 1945.

When you watch the movie a second time it's so much easier to pick up on all the signs that Captain K really hated the Nazi regime.... It makes me sad to think about because how many Nazis in those old, real life photographs of history were people like him? A lot of society would look at all those photos & videos and just assume that every one of them must've been evil, warmongering people. But its very clear now that most of them were brainwashed and just didn't know any better (like Jojo). Which doesn't fully excuse many of the actions they took, No. But how many soldiers were like Captain K?... who weren't radical... that just wanted to be soldiers in order to protect and represent their hometown... that thought hating jews was stupid... but they just couldn't do anything about it because to protest this could mean their execution... so they laid low and hoped that one day Hitler and his dogmatic followers would be overthrown.

@@simonrooney2272 Captain K is Wehrmacht, not SS. There were a heap of generals in the Wehrmacht that weren't card carrying members of the Nazi party. And regardless, a captain isn't 'higher command.' At most, a captain will have command of a single company. And it's implied that Captain K was removed from the front for a reason -- likely he was already disaffected by the Nazi regime before the events of the movie even begin.

A lot in the wehrmacht hated Hitler and the Nazis, even the high up generals, I am sure some were on board at the start because of his rhetoric, they were proud of their country and it had been humiliated in WW1, so lots of vets were very angry about that. They basically went from being on the brink of winning the war, to being told it was all their fault and then going home where they were shunned by the people and treated as losers, add in many of these men had injuries physical and mental, you can imagine come the 1930s here is a guy basically saying he'll make Germany great again, make the people proud of the German army again and they'd get revenge against the Allies, particularly the French, they'd be jumping all over that. The Bernie Gunter novels are a good read about the mindset of German men in 1930s and the war who weren't Nazis. Gunter is basically a Berlin cop, but because of that he ends up being in the SS, despite not actually being a party member and basically hating them, but he gets swept up in it just trying to live his life and not get killed. It's very easy for us to to think had we been then we would have stood up to it or spoken out, and many people did, but there were millions of people just trying to survive and live

That's Rosie's bike Captain K rode to the house. He must have seen her hanging in town square and came to help Jojo against the Gestapo knowing he would be questioned and sent to a labor camp or murdered as well, so he came over to help prove the Jojo's loyalty

My mother grew up in those days, but instead of studying the textbooks for school she constantly played the piano and sang. My grandmother threatened her she would put her in the BDM, Bund deutscher Mädchen, which was the girls' equivalent of the HJ, Hitler Jugend. Because of this threat she got a move on with learning. Lol. Eventually becoming a music teacher after the war.

I think Captain Klenzendorf is gay. The way his second sits at the swimming pool, the fact that the two are always together. There's a scene where the two have a moment. The fabulous uniform at the end... He can't be a nazi at heart because he knew he'd be killed for it.

Capitão K é na verdade o herói do filme. Ele representava tudo que os nazistas realmente odiavam. Mostra de que nem todos pensavam como Hittler naquela época, mesmo estando sob o dominio e sob as ordens de um tirano insano no poder. É só prestar atenção no filme.
