The funniest thing about Jerma's rant about slasher films not having the main character doing the killing is that both of the examples he gave actually got made. There's a Friday the 13th sequel where Jason is a ghost possessing people to kill each other and Wes Craven's New Nightmare is legitimately a film in which the antagonist is not Freddie Krueger, but is instead an ancient demon who takes the form of Freddie because the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been trapping him in imaginary scenarios where the collective consciousness of the people collaborating to tell those stories is sufficiently powerful to trick it into believing that it's been defeated for real. New Nightmare is actually really quite good, but if you find the self-awareness of Scream a bit tiresome it's basically a prototype Wes Craven made for that idea (though the fact that it's so directly tied to the original Nightmare on Elm Street and the state of those films in the public consciousness lends it a sense of surreality that gives it a unique sense of playfulness)
