I think it's more that (former) child stars experience a lot of abuse, than being fuckups. People mocked Britney Spears for having a very public breakdown, then learned years later that her father had essentially had her declared insane so he could legally control her and use her like a work horse to make him money. Culkin said in a RedLetterMedia video (a different one, I believe) that Joe Pesci was supposed to pretend to bite his nose in one of the Home Alone movies, but instead just actually bit it. He presented it as a funny crazy story. I know he had to appeal to be emancipated as a teenager because his father was stealing all of his acting money. I think that most child stars experience abuse, whether sexual, physical, financial, etc., and getting into self-destructive behavior is a natural consequence of that.

Fun Fact: the only reason Mickey Rooney kept working was because one of his sons kept insisting that he had very little money and needed to keep taking jobs long after retirement age, which included his cameos in The Simpsons and The Muppets (2011). That son was also skimming money off what his dad earned, and Mickey Rooney only found out a few years before he died.
