Hi, small animal vet here, I have seen good results in canine OA therapy with cox inhibitors for first few days in combination with amantadine 2-5 mg/kg twice daily at first going for higher dosages + condrovet from bioiberica - glyco/chondro + hyaluronic acid + type II native collagen for 40 days. Of course, there is a lot more than this in OA management, as you know, but amantadine is something I tend to use in a lot of elderly canine patients

I just haven't used it a lot, definitely always willing to try new things, so maybe I'll add this into my arsenal!

My vet prescribed gabapentin after ACL surgery. Awful experience. Maybe it was the dosage but she had sedation and scary ataxia. She does very well on tramodol. Just like humans, dogs responses to meds are variable.

Gabapentin made my dog loose ability to walk,

It can cause temperary ataxia, yes but usually you just need to lower the dose

@@DoctorDawson sorry no, wasnt temporarily, tried for two years kept lowering dose until it was subtherapeutic dr said, My dog instantly recovered when stopping this awful medicine Pain in dogs is bad due to drug wars my vet says

@@protect_provide8031 well, I am glad you guys were able to discontinue it and the side effects resolved. Not every dog (or person) has the same reaction to every medication. I know a lot of dogs that I treat have very much benefited from Gaba, but I have had a few dogs that have reacted similar to yours (though we didn't let it go for 2 years, we discontinued it after we couldn't really go lower on the dose). The good news with Gabapentin is that usually any side effects, might be dramatic, but often are not life threatening and usually resolve with discontinuing the medication.

@@DoctorDawson any advice for a vet who isnt listening? My dog is 14 lab, full of life, amandatine, galliprant,,rimdyl, gabapentin, adequan, steroids, ALL supplements under sun, therapy,,massages, slings, homemade diet. Since my dog turned 13 his medicines aren't working anymore and he's offering no Solutions now he actually had to report him to the hospital for unethical neglect What would you tell a,parent of a dog in this case? Im so worried, my dogs not eligible for ethunasia since he loves food, water, he loves life, he wants to play, just hurting and stiff
