Hey guys, in this video we are going to talk about the best pain medications for dogs with osteoarthritis. Good pain management is definitely an important part of managing any dog with osteoarthritis. Pain medications are not the only part of successful management, but in this video, we are going to talk specifically about the best NSAID (or the one I like the most) If you haven't watched the video, don't hate on me too much. COX2 drugs can cause heart problems in people. Is the same thing true in animals?

I have used meloxicam prescribed by a doctor for my own osteoarthritis and osteopenia problems. After 20 days my stomach got so upset that I had to discontinue it and my stomach gave me problems for a year after I quit taking it. And that gave me a little to feed my rabbit when while it was in GI stasis after chewing on a rubber floor mat. I worried that my little rabbit would have the same stomach problems that I encountered. I didn't use it but about four times for my rabbit, and guy forced fed him and working past his GI stasis and now his makes Pooh's but they are just a little bit small. But he makes a lot of them. Quantity makes up for size I guess. Is there any risk of causing stomach pain with meloxicam in both rabbits and dogs?

Definitely can cause Gi problems in dogs with long term use, which is why I tend to use more carprofen and Galliprant. In rabbits they tend to not get the GI signs associated with it that a lot of people or dogs get.

@@DoctorDawson as a human I took it with food but still after 20 days my stomach was on fire. Giving it to a small animal in GI stasis with nothing in their stomach seemed rather cruel to me. So I always made him eat the Oxbow Critical Care.

Yeah, they aren't nearly as sensitive to the COX1 effects as we are and what's really important with GI stasis is decreasing the pain response so they are more likely to eat and they are much more likely to do that if we can control the pain.
