Hopefully you see this. Doing a diy because I’m already over budget for my son’s party. I have a 5x3 and an 8x6 of the same backdrop. One I think is too big and now I’m realizing I should’ve gone with the 7x5 according to your video. I’m the test shots the 5x3 works with his height and the props I intend to use. But I want there to be balloons and well the foil rocket I want to use is 31inches! Needless to say I’m having a hard time making the balloons work. What do you think? Just use the larger backdrop? I plan to shoot it on the 27th.

I'm always a big fan of using the larger backdrop. Just because you have the extra space doesn't mean you have to use it. Plus with a larger backdrop it means that you can bring your child away from the backdrop a little further which will help you get the background out of focus. I think using the 5x7 as the way to go especially if you want to try the balloons. Thanks for the great question and I hope the shoot goes well!

@@troutmanphoto thanks so much! I’ll use the 8x6. Just seems like my “one” letters are to small for such a big backdrop. Thinking I may stick with 5x3 and just raise it 2-3 inches and do balloons across the bottom? Feels like so much is out of frame with the 8x6. I’ll probably end up doing both. 🤦🏾‍♀️ am I overthinking it? The backdrop is planets. It’s a space theme

@@Tamcla moving your kiddo away from the background will solve the problem of having a lot of the background elements out of frame. The farther your child gets away from the background the more of the background you're camera is going to be able to see. If you look at a lot of my behind the scenes videos you'll notice that the kiddo is about five sometimes 6 ft away from the background and then I use a zoom lens to zoom in so that you don't see the the background stands. If you're using a phone or don't have a zoom lens then you're going to have to put the kiddo a little bit closer to the background but you're still going to want to be at least 3 ft off the background. But to be completely honest I learned all of this from trial and error. The best thing you can do is grab a stuffed animal roughly the size of your child, set up the set and play with it until you find a combination of backdrop size and distance that works for the type of images that you are going to create. The best part... Playing around with the set is a whole lot of fun.

@@troutmanphoto you’re the best! Thanks so much I knew to set him 3ft from the backdrop but didn’t think to bring him even more forward! Thanks for the stuffed animal tip! That’s so smart!

I have a first cake smash sessiom coming up for a close friend of mine. I am extremely tensed about backdrop as I have never bought one before. Can you please help with the material and size?
@troutmanphoto
@troutmanphoto 5 ай бұрын
Of course. Happy to help! As far as size goes I never go below 7 feet wide on my backdrops. Kate Backdrops sells some cute / affordable 7 wide by 5 tall backdrops make from a wrinkle free fabric that I love. But sometimes the 7 ft version can make it harder to photograph the baby. The baby will crawl of the backdrop. So I usually recommend up grading to the wide by 6.5 tall version if it's in your budget. Here is a link* to some fun Kate backdrops on Amazon. amzn.to/3wuR12Z * full disclosure it is an affiliate link and a small commission from each sale goes toward supporting this channel. Anyway I hope this helps. and good luck on your upcoming smash cake session. Oh! I almost forgot! I will be doing free cake smash image reviews. So after the session you can submit your image to me and I will do a KZfaq video where I give feedback and helpful tips on how to take your images to the next level. If you're interested in doing that you can submit your images here forms.gle/Zevv2eGUzXW5YFA66 Anyway, thank your for the great question and I hope you have a great day!

@@troutmanphoto thanks so much for some awesome knowledge sharing here on youtube and being very responsive. Do I need to buy a seperate floor piece if I go with 7ft wide × 6.5 ft tall?
@troutmanphoto
@troutmanphoto 5 ай бұрын
@@Shalin.S.Shah. Yes you do. Even if you purchased a 10x10 background to use as the backdrop and the floor, you still wouldn't want to smash a cake on it because the frosting color will stain your backdrop. So I use a roll of seamless paper or a cheap vinyl backdrop with wood, stone or grass printed on it. The paper you can trough away when finished and the vinyl doesn't stain for the most part. Here are some links to the types of floors I recommend. Vinyl floors amzn.to/3TeQGu8 Seamless paper amzn.to/3uO76Qz I hope this helps and have a great day, Daniel

I can never shoot at f2-f6 because its so over exposed. Do I have the wrong lighing. Am I behind on the light scene. Do I need digital lights?
@troutmanphoto
@troutmanphoto 3 жыл бұрын
It's tough to answer that question without knowing some more details. Tell me about what you're photographing, where and what lights you are currently using. But off the top of my head I would say you need to look at getting a neutral density filter. It's basically a pair of dark sunglasses for your lens. A neutral density filter should help with the over exposure problem and it is way cheaper than a set of new lights.

I like the backdrops that are printed on polyester. A lot of manufacturers have silly names for them like magic cloth or something like that. The polyester really helps with keeping wrinkles out of your background. On the other side of the coin, the ones I try to avoid are the cheap vinyl printed backgrounds that you often find on amazon.com. There just isn't any way to get the wrinkles out of the dang things. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions and have a great day. -Daniel

how much i will charge for a session
@troutmanphoto
@troutmanphoto 6 ай бұрын
That's a really tough question. Everybody's financial situations are so different. I would start by figuring out how much the smash cake sets cost to build on average and then never charge less than that for a session fee. Also don't forget to ad extra for your time. I wish I had an exact answer for you but it just depends on your market, how much time you put into the project, and how much you spend on you sets. This really is a great question and I promise to try and make a video on this topic. Thank you for the great question and I hope you have a great day.
