@@Zipscanners1 I have had my SDS100 for several weeks now and I can honestly say that as far as 700/800 MHZ P-25 Simulcast systems, the SDS is much better at receiving them than my trusty older BCD436HP. The biggest difference that I have found has been the units ability to hear and decode systems that I could never even begin to hear previously. I purchased the SDS100 with the Remtronics SMA antenna. I compared it to my 436 with a very similar antenna. I live in Northern KY very near Cincinnati, Ohio. My home counties in NKY have just recently changed to a 700 MHZ phase 2 system. My BCD436 did a very good job on that system, however the systems in Ohio are on a state wide system called MARCS. These simulcast systems were always a problem with any radio that I have used until now. Going back, I have used a BC296, Pro96, PSR500, BCD436, each with various results. The 436 had been by far the best until now. My SDS100 is reliably picking up not only the Cincinnati sites almost perfectly, but also 3 counties in SW Ohio. These are Butler, Warren and Clermont Counties. With the 436, I was always surprised that I could often hear Butler county better than the Cincinnati sites. I suspected that I was only able to pick up one tower site from Butler County and thus less Simulcast distortion. The other two counties were never listenable with any scanner until now. I would say that the SDS100 is a life changer as I can now enjoy listening to incidents and know that I am not going to miss anything. In addition to this, I am now able to listen reliably at my work site. This is a metal building with very few windows and until now, I was out of luck on most systems. I would rate my reception quality at 99%. Very occasionally, I will get a little distortion or a slight cut out, but this is so rare that it is not a problem. The VHF and UHF reception is not great, but I am using a dedicated 800 MHZ antenna so that is not really a fair way to review it. Hooked up to an outside antenna, it did pretty good on the civilian airband which I found surprising. I think with a good all band antenna, it would do an adequate job and now these two bands are no longer critical to me. If one is having problems with simulcast distortion, I would highly recommend the SDS100. In fact, I just sold both my BCD436HP along with my 536 in order to purchase an SDS200. I am very happy with that radio as well.

DMR, ProVoice EDACS, and NXDN are types of radio frequencies that, without the upgrade, police scanners cannot scan. Imagine the radio in your car - if you only had FM, nothing you could do would allow you to listen to AM stations. All the FM stations would be clean and clear, even if there were AM stations that you could be listening to if you had the upgrade. The SDS100, our most popular model, can interpret analog, phase I, phase II, and simulcast. Those are the 'FM' stations for this metaphor. In some areas, DMR, NXDN, or ProVoice EDACS are used in addition to those types of frequencies, and without an upgrade it'll be unreadable and invisible, but all the other frequencies would be clear. Well, you can pick up digital with a ProVoice upgrade, but FHP has been encrypted for a long time as well as a few Pinellas Sheriff channels.

@@themikeymikechannel2947 Understandable, Florida and Pennsylvania should think twice about encrypting DPS/HP frequencies. Doesn't seem necessary. I get encrypting inherently *private* agencies, but I don't understand why traffic stops would cause enough fuss to encrypt. Perhaps that's an oversight though...says a lot about those statewide departments

That's a common question! The biggest benefits to owning your own scanner are (1) that scanner apps are shut down during states of emergency like after the Boston Marathon Bombing or during Hurricane Katrina, meaning the times that you need a scanner most you lose access, and (2) listening to scanner apps, you only hear what the broadcaster wants you to hear - with a programmed scanner, you get to hear EVERYTHING you want and NOTHING you don't.

I would recommend looking on Radio Reference. That website will tell you what system are utilized. Nascar handhelds are typically short range and analog only, but most public safety agencies have gone digital or trunking.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure why all scanner software is only PC programmable. Whistler and Uniden are really the only prominent scanner manufacturers and they set it up this way

Obviously no scanner can pick up encryption, but there are still plenty of US cities investing in simulcast systems, which is a move in the opposite direction. Hence the SDS100.

If you only care about police who are encrytping... yeah they won’t help, but there are plenty of other things to monitor businesses, public transportation is probably some of the most interesting here, fire, ems

@@Zipscanners1 When I bought my scanner I was told that Davidson County was fully encrypted, but I was pleasantly surprised that even though it was encrypted, they are simulcasting many of the police, fire and ems dispatchers unencrypted on Middle Tennessee Regional Trunked Radio, so most of the communications can still be listened to.

@@Dazlidorne The person who told you it's encrypted probably meant the city of Nashville. Police, fire, and EMS is fully encrypted there.

I agree. My area is transitioning to P25 Simulcast and having to pay $650 to reliably hear the system is tough to swallow. With the potential threat of the same agencies going to full time encryption at some point its just too risky. I would entertain a scanner for $325 or so to hear simulcast systems for now and gamble on the encryption threat but not $650. On a side note P25 digital systems are vulnerable to jamming and the really nefarious types with deep pockets that aren't too concerned about big FCC fines and jail time could make them deaf as part of a larger threat.
