Hey Youthman, I haven't finished the video yet. It would be nice to see something like this on a ALR screen like Slate and Black Diamond from SI. I've been waiting on getting a projector because I've found that while I have a light controlled setup with black ceiling and dark walls and all, at least 90% of the time I have to have considerable light in the room for my kids to play, or to talk with guests. Even if the lights are dimmed and not direct... I guess my room is the main TV watching space, and not ONLY for a theater experience. Only when I'm alone do I get to go full darkness. I'd love to see how the experience is with these in that use-case. Does a NZ series have the brightness needed to accomplish this? And how much of a subjective hit do you take when you do go full dark in the room with a Black Diamond screen or something.

This was great! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. The rest of my comment isn't intended to be a critique; I just wanted to share a thought I had when watching this. I know that using MadVR for tone mapping to SDR allowed the older generation of projectors compete, but maybe next time you guys do this you can skip the external tone mapping and feed actual HDR signals to the projectors and see what they can do. I have to wonder if the latest projectors can do a better job of tone mapping; I hope they could since they should know exactly what their own capabilities are. A side by side with vs. without madVR with HDR source material on identical or almost identical projectors would be great, too. Cheers!

Great video. I still own a JVC X570 (RS420) and with external tone mapping with the UB420 it puts out an incredible HDR image. It has also brought new life to my Blu Ray collection by upscaling them to 4K. Every time I start thinking about upgrades to a newer native 4K projector I watch a movie and can’t bring myself to spend the extra money.

Such a great video, thank you! Well worth the wait. One suggestion for a 2023 edition - if you do one - would be to have a segment at the end where you turn off MadVR. I totally get why you used it for the blind tests to even the playing field, but it would be great to see some actual footage of the lower end projectors side-by-side with the higher end ones. You wouldn’t even need to do blind testing, as it sounds like the results would be pretty obvious. But for those of your viewers who are actually trying to figure out if spending $5k vs $15k on a projector is worth it for them, the exclusion of MadVR would be the best way to get a real sense of that. Thanks again!

@@jin5667 that home theater dude channel has a good comparison to the Sony 715 and NX line (forget the exact model but it was $8,000). I AM on a 165” scope screen and I’m sure the NZ8 and extra lumens would be great but I might wait another generation of laser based models from JVC to see if they end up pushing the lumens any further. I run mine with the Color filter in place too so I’m tempted to disable that to see if it’s a lot brighter.

With all the opinions and voting thoughts I would have liked to see people say which one they would actually buy. Even those with the funds I am curious if they would spend for the laser vs non laser JVC or even the Epson. I guess my conclusion is the NX7 is a better value than the laser series being a similar image for less. The Epson 6050 or try to get the same 5050 for model even less will not have the blacks of the NX7 but WHOLE lot of savings and should still do well on a large screen. The optima is for your kids bright playroom, outside but would never hold it's own for an enthusiast on a larger screen or without the tone mapping boost it received.

If you look at the native contrast of the pixel shift RS PJs (like the 420), they are significantly better than the native contrast on the native 4K JVC PJs. The laser PJs have better dimming which "may" level the playing field. Like the guys said, I really think combining external tone mapping and level matching on a smaller screen took away the main advantages of the laser JVCs. Going with a larger screen and not allowing external mapping would have changed it dramatically. I also think you have to factor in the benefits of laser over bulbs when buying. One thing I think would have been useful is to try the filter in the NZ8. Since you used a 100" screen, and the NZ8 seemed too bright when maxed out, then the lumen loss from the filter may have actually helped, plus you get a greater color gamut.
@Jagman1996
@Jagman1996 2 жыл бұрын
@youthman I should have mentioned this but I really enjoyed this video. I've watched at least a couple dozen of your videos and this was by far my favorite. The NZ8 was a PJ I almost bought. Now I'm not sure. My screen is 103" but I have some ambient light during the day. My plan was to use max lumens during the day and to use the filter at night for more serious viewing. I could also do a larger scope AT screen and really take advantage of it. That's just a LOT of work. Then again, I could get LGs 99" OLED... pricing may be similar to the NZ8... especially since JVC no longer allows street pricing but LG does. I'm also really curious what rec 2020 triple laser PJs will come out this year. I suspect I might wait 6-12 months to see how the market plays out.

What a great effort, thank you to everyone who made this possible. Screen size: If you've got 100" screens (because you can fit 2 of them in) but you want to be testing (for example) 130" screens, what would happen if you simply zoomed the projectors to project 130", and you left the over-spill hit black velvet? Sure you wouldn't watch a film like that, with parts of the image missing, but it would show you what those images would look like on a bigger screen.

As an installer, my recommendation is to compare in their best default picture mode for the source material. eg. The Epson is typically best in Natural mode. This would better represent the majority of consumers installations. A very small percentage of projector buyers get professional calibration performed.

Thanks for the comparison. I still feel peak projector for me in a batcave is the JVC x9000. I notice contrast much more than resolution and with MadVR I feel the contrast/HDR I get from the x9000 is unrivalled. Even in a batcave there's a zero sum game with contrast - you push the peak white too high and the reflections form the room wash back onto your screen, thus diminishing the contrast. I had quite the revelation when I stopped watching HDR stuff in high lamp mode, in low lamp the contrast appeared even better!

Kind of surprised the JVC beat the Epson 6050 that solidly. I prefer the 6050's brighter image and use that brightness to be able to engage my color filter for HDR color volume and coverage. (and for my bigger 150" screen) Many do prefer the JVC for it's blacks, but I didn't think that view was THAT universal, and it's not like the Epson has bad blacks, especially when you have the iris settings, tone mapping and filter set "right". Both solid projectors that fill slightly different needs and scenarios, so I expected the vote to be more mixed at least. When you factor in price, the Epson usually comes out ahead in a price for performance scenario too.

The 6050 is actually a great projector. It’s only when you put them side-by-side with the JVC that people tend to choose the JVC because they immediately noticed the deeper black levels. Thanks for this awesome video! I am considering getting the NZ7 to use with my 100" screen. Being a big 3d fan, I will surely watch all my 3d blu-rays on it (via the Pana UB9000). I am a bit concerned about the lumens on the NZ7 for that purpose. From what I can gather from this video, there is not a lot of practical difference with respect to brightness between the NZ7 and NZ8 in real life when viewed on a 100" screen. I guess that pertains in particular to 2d content and likely then 4k HDR content. But would you say that the same is true for 3d content on the NZ7 vs the NZ8 with respect to lumens/brightness? Or is the incremental costs going from NZ7 to NZ8 worth it for viewing 3d content to get the added brightness (again; will be watching on a 100" screen). Thanks again for the awesome video. Keep up the good work!

I do wish the shootout didn't include MadVR, etc. Just straight out of the box and calibrated. The argument would be made that those lower-tiered projectors would be blown out of the water, but I think the whole point would be, does the difference in what your seeing correlate to the difference in what you would be willing to pay in price. In other words, not just which one is 'better', but do I want projector A at this price, or is it worth it to me to get projector B for that price. Regardless, I really appreciate the video here, and the comments on AVSForums. A wealth of knowledge and feedback. Thank you.

i been into projectors since 2002(although never got into the details-graphs too deep - an experienced amateur would describe me)and had or at least experienced most of the good ones. Tech has moved incredibly greatly since those times for example my Panasonic 8000 (1080p) that was considered one of the greats a decade ago - while still good, i was amazed that my eyes prefered a new budget(under $2k) projector over a former heavy weight. With all the advancements there were upsets as well for example I was greatly dissapointed with JVC NX line(had 5 and 7) when compared to older JVC 4k e-shifters and Epson 11-12k compared to 6/5050(why would Epson remove 3d?). Currently you can be very happy and save tons of $(over spending $20k+ for latest and greatest) with a good projector(with good brightness and blacks) and external 'helper' as well as decent screen and room. I currently settled on Epson 5050 with custom build PC running MadVR and alr and i dare anyone to pick NZ9 over this setup costing fraction

Enjoyed this video but my 2 cents worth. I am wondering if the comparison was maybe a bit misleading and unfair. I really don't think you should have put madVR into the mix and did the brightness matching. To me the projectors should stand or fall on their own merit as their inherent capabilities is a big part of what you pay for and the primary contributor to the performance vs price value-for-money. Even expecting people to pair a lower cost projector with a UB9000 may be unrealistic and people could prefer to purchase a more budget friendly Sony as an example. This is also further accentuated when you consider the whole overall use case picture and the projector being part of an entertainment system. Having a projector lifted beyond its abilities when playing purchased media on a UB9000 may be a small part of it's desired use case and the greater usage may be watching Netflix or other streaming service via an AppleTV, Roku or Shield. To me you have taken a bulldozer to the landscape and used it to trim off the mountain peeks by pushing them into the valleys to make your more even playing field. I'd even go so far as to say that even calibration is misleading and should be running using a preset that a consumer is most likely to choose on an out of the box projector. That shows what you get for your dollar rather than the what's possible that this comparison showed. The projectors have a huge price gap so it would be more fair, I feel, to not clip its wings and let a 15k projector show you what it an do compared to a 2k projector. Another thought too, is that not everyone has a dedicated space for a traditional projector so maybe for an overall overview there needs to be some short-throw and ultra short-throw's thrown into the mix
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 жыл бұрын
If we did not calibrate then, no one would have taken the comparison seriously. I would have been ok not using MadVR as you are correct, the vast majority of people will not be using them but their thinking was it allowed each projector to perform at its absolute best (nothing wrong with that). Without it, there would have been no reason to even put the lower three projectors in the running. At the end of the day, we had a great time, learned a lot and found there are much more similarities than differences in the higher end projectors at least on a 100” screen. We would 100% welcome you or anyone else performing their own shootout if there is a better way of doing it. In the end, you will never satisfy everyone on how it was performed.

Hi Youthman. Setup idea for you. One shootout (March) with 8 projectors under $10,000 on 100 inch screen. Next shootout (June) with 8 projectors $10-20k on 120 inch screen, Third Shootout (September) Projectors $20k and above on 150 inch screen. Then the day before Black Friday you bring the winners of each shootout together for a superbowl done across each screen size. Only kidding not expecting anyone to put that together. Point is "most" people now or future can't fit a 100 inch screen on their wall. The World is building UP, more buildings more units, smaller units, not more houses by percentage. So you need a shootout for the masses (all the people in tall building units) to watch and then another for enthusiast's who have the space or plan to one day have the space for a 120-150 inch screen. Most TV's cost under 10k. Projector shootout for the masses has to be under 10k. 100 inch screen may not even fit in an elevator. Just my thoughts. Great video.

A more accurate title would be "JVC 2022 projectors vs a bunch of old projectors". :) We don't have 2022 offerings yet from Sony, Epson and Optoma.

Now that we know how important it is to have perfect black levels are, we know that we need to make sure we do calibrate it properly. @Youthman you mentioned that its important to hangout with these guys to learn (well cause they are awesome) but its not always possible because of the distance. Soooooo would be great if you can make a detail (DETAIL) video on like JVC projector that shows how to properly calibrate the projector using their Autocal. I know you already have a video with Nick on it but it didn't go in a lot of details like how to first properly setup the environment and which sensor to use and how far to place the senor. Then calibrating Gamma is another challenge. I know Nick likes to calibrate for Gamma by pointing the sensor straight towards the projector and there are some challenges that need to be factored in. So you can see that there are many steps involved and having Nick/Sowk make a video that goes into details on how to calibrate JVC for SDR/HDR would be super great to have.

That is a great idea. Unfortunately there are several states between us. Maybe the next time we get together we could film something
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 жыл бұрын
But keep in mind, Nic says he normally spends 3 to 4 hours calibrating a system. It would be nearly impossible to put that all in a video
@sherazdotnet

@@Youthman Agreed but with your skills, you'll be able to nicely sum it into 1 hour video. Also, It takes 4 hours because you have to let projector run the patterns to calibrate. We won't need to capture that. Just the steps :-). This was a 22hours event and look how nicely you captured it all into 1:20 mins video. You are very good at it. I specially like how you referenced other video clips into this as a reference at different point. You definitely put a lot of work into it. Kodos to you.

I gotcha. That makes sense on the test patterns an actual measurements taking the majority of the time. Definitely something to think about for a feature video

Epson have always offered some great bang for buck LCD projectors, in the lower price range of home theatre projectors. In regards to all different aspects of the picture quality ie contrast, colour reproduction. Epson have performed these aspects very competently in their model line-up over the years. My personal test for the contrast ratio of my current Epson was Zero Dark Thirty. The night time scenes where you have the choppers weaving through the mountains of Pakistan, and then finally landing at the compound. With Seal Team 6 rocking up to the house party completely unannounced. 😕 JVC projectors are definitely the leader in the higher price range of HT projectors.

Hi Youthman, I just recently discovered your channel and you're doing great work. I did a search and noticed you haven't reviewed JL audio subs. Do you plan to review them one day?
@Youthman

Thank you for the kind words. I would not be opposed to reviewing JL subwoofers. They were the king back in the day when I was in the car audio. They’ve never been at the forefront of home theater though

So would you recommend some one with a smaller budget to build a home theater PC and use MadVr to use with there projector? Or would you recommend everyone? Michael will you install a home theater PC and get a Madvr?

@youthman Hi all - I am new to this channel and thanks for all this great content. I am about to get my home theater upgraded. I have a Sony Ruby projector (yes from back in 2006/2007) and now trying to decide between the Sony 715es vs the JVC NZ7. I want to know if lack of HDMI 2.1, lack of HDR 10+, lack of laser are factors significant enough to not pick the Sony and go for the JVC? Pls help because I a\currently have ordered the 715 es but am wondering if I should switch my order to the JVC NZ7.

I still can't decide between the NX7 and the NZ7. I only have 100inches, don't need the extra brightness and the nx7 has better native contrast, but that laser dimming though....
