In todays meta quest 3 video i am going to show you how to use virtual desktop on your quest 3. This video will not cover Meta Quest 3 Air Link or meta quest 3 link. I don't personally like those methods but I will show you how to do those in another video if requested!

Adding a note about the AV1 encoder. A lot of people think it's exclusive to Nvidia 40 series gpus and that's not the case at all. It works on all of the Intel GPUs and it works on the AMD 6000 and 7000 gpus as well. However, the only meta headset the AV1 encoder only works with is the Quest 3

Are you sure? I can select it with my Q3 and 3080Ti but the mode shown is HEVC.

Virtual Desktop for VR maybe nice, and I have never used it yet, I will still go with a link cable via USB to my PC for my PCVR usage. So far works great with all my SIM racing games. It is not a cost thing with getting Virtual Desktop, just haven't seen a need. Maybe in the future for doing full wireless. Thank you for the walk through tutorial on Virtual Desktop. I haven't done full wireless since I am sitting down doing PCVR racing games. Thanks for the video and take care

One of the downsides to Virtual Desktop is if you are Live streaming and launching games directly from within virtual desktop as they recommend, your point of view is not an accurately represented in the video. So if you're looking down your sight while you're shooting everybody sees what looks like hipfire which is what we saw when you played contractors. So if you are streaming live and using virtual desktop launch steamvr and launch the games within steam VR, then go on your desktop to the steam VR overlay to click on the menu with the three lines and select display VR View. Then go on your desktop and ALT +tab to the VR View Window right click and select right eye. And that will accurately display what you are seeing in your headset.

Hey, first time viewer here. You provide a lot of great info, but it was really hard for me to watch your video and look at the settings in virtual desktop when you move your head around so much. I would recommend to be more stil / lock the frame in center if possible. Do you know if it makes sense have a wifi extender and then ethernet cable? I cant really have a cable running from my routers location to my pc. Thanks

I just don't go over to discord, I'd like to tease you here: I know, "probably not going to happen" :) but I really think folks would appreciate a comparison between, say, the top three solutions for PCVR on Quest 3. You know, you're really top front among the crowd who really understood what the Quest 3 actually is.

Very nice thank you! could you do a tutorial for the best setting in steam vr for the quest 3 to be in line with VRdesktop? thanks I saw that there is a lot of settings there too so i find it very confusing. Also i'm expericing a lot of blurry image in distant object, while the near stuff is very sharp. Like in skyrim, assetto corsa competizione and rally 2.0 (the cockpit is very nice but everything utside the car is blurry) It's the game or the settings? my spec: 32g ram 4070ti i79700k

Thanks for the video! I have problems when selecting my game from the games tab on VD the game boots on my desktop and I can hear the audio in my headset but will not go into VR mode. I’ve tried everything and can’t find a solution.

Snapdragon Game Super Resolution works on most headsets that have the Snapdragon chip, which also includes the Quest 2, Pico 4 etc

Try turning off that super resolution, much more stable gameplay , i think its kinda broken right now ,it aint no dlss 3.5

Your wifi is 5ghz, 866Mpbs. You had issues at the encoding (GPU delay), network went up too and decoding. Dropping the bitrate is definitely the way to address that. Graphics quality is your base resolution. God like is good for that 4090

Been looking for insight into this, so thanks for the comment. If you could clarify: my Wi-Fi is also 5ghz, 866 Mpbs, very close standalone router that's hardwired, with HEVC codec, but I'm getting stuttering at a modest bitrate when I make abrupt movements. Is this due to the graphics card not keeping up? If so, what's the process of reducing it's load? Reducing bitrate or is there more I can do? (I have a 3080 with a i7 9700K)

@@Breyfogle126 Your router is wired - Great. Is your pc wired to the router? - This is important. I'm also assuming your particular wifi ssid is only available on 5ghz, and not 2.4 and is also exclusive to your Quest device and not shared with family. I'm currently running Virtual Desktop, AV1 and even on low end games like Super hot, or the SteamVR home, simply ducking or moving your head around can causes massive stuttering - this is an AV1 issue. But I just upgraded from a 3080 and used HEVC exclusively for 2 years without issues. What games are you testing this with?

Hmm my virtual desktop looks different. I got a 7900xtx and a 7800x3d it says different option selections too. Maybe it's different based on the gpu

I do about 100mbps on a 3070 ti with the quest 3 in half life alyx. I get about the same numbers using the hevc 10 bit codec.. 48ms at 90 fps... I used the high settings just to make sure the fps is consistent tho and I'm using the HIGH resolution setting on virtual desktop. Also have the steamvr resolution (which I think still works I'm not sure) set to 130% or so. What I'd like to know is how one could set the resolution in virtual desktop to be specific for each game. Like in steamvr you can do that... Because some games are lighter than others and you can crank the super resolution up so that it corrects for the lenses etc..

doesnt vd override the steamvr res? also lemme know what performance u get using h.264+, i have the same gpu with a ryzen 9 5900x and can run hla at 250mbps, 120 fps, 30-40ms latency, using the vd high res

Very good overview on Virtual Desktop setup/settings. Well done mate! I've use VD for +4yrs starting with my Q1 and back then is was a real godsend, and it even worked better than Oculus Link when it first came out. Sliding forward to the present with my Q3/i913900k/rtx4090 and good router/wifi 5Ghz setup; With the right settings I currently don't see any significant differences between VD and Air Link. This includes spending a day with the latest VD update so I could try out av1. Both wireless options work great and it really comes down to personal preferences imho. I kinda get tired of hearing VD fanboys (and Air Link fan boys) trying to tell us one is soooo much better than the other. That's just nonsense imho. Also, if you want the very best streaming PCVR you cannot beat Link at 500-650mbps. This will always give the best distance clarity and lowest latency (usually 5-7ms lower). Having said that, I still prefer taking a little hit on this for the freedom of wireless PCVR. Anyway, just my $0.02 worth. Really depends, you can upgrade PCs with good bang for your buck, and that can be used for other games beside VR. But if you're set on VR, Q1 and Q3 are not comparable, Q3 has vastly better display. Keep in mind that Q2 can be picked up for less than $200 used now and is only slightly worse for the display.

Is there something like "Virtual desktop" for cable connection users ? I play ETS2 only in VR and I just sitting on my ass when I play so I use cable connection. I have Intel12700 with 4700 and performance in the game is really bad. I'm using Oculus rift app / Steam VR.

is there any reason, why they didnt went for displayport over usb? why is living with compression, if you make the choice to support wired pcvr, still a thing? granted, havent seen how it looks inside, but from knowing compression, foliage heavy games like skyrim, will always have problems. but whats the alternative? pcvr market only servers enthusiast, everything else is old, or standalone state with added DP for pcvr. and the other big chunk, is standalone midrange for casual gaming, theres nothing in between anymore. if vr headsets were gpus, we had 4050s 4060s 4060tis, in normal and mobile and 4090 or 4090ti, , (if it existed)maybe a 4080 with just 10gigs in that case but no 4070 or 4070ti. hp pulled out, vive doenst deliver, valve is basically silent for 4 years..

If your close to your PC/Router you should be fine. I ran my quest 1 a couple rooms down from my pc on a 5ghz band and it worked and I was on a GTX 1070.

I've sorted out the quality, it looks much better, however I get fps drops when I crouch in the real world? Anyone have an idea about this ? Fps is like 84-75 playing blade and sorcery until I crouch and it drops fast?

i have a 4090 13900k 64 gb ram 3200 mhz samsung 990 evo pro 4 tb memory and i still get stuttering and jumps when i move quickly or vertically in half life alyx wtf 120 hz and every thing maxed i get 120 fps but lots of reprojection time added

You have slow ram in this context, and use 90hz. Your wifi system and pc components have a weak link. Equipment that you thinks 'good enough' might be causing it. Unfortunately.

I found I could not get virtual desktop to play smoothly with steam vr I tried the occulus Air link with the beta windows occulus software and found red matter 2 was then crisp clear and had no frame drops. The only issue to resolve is I have no sound in air link which is odd. I tried virtual desktop again and even when changing the settings to a lower setting it remained very bad. Overall I have to say other than the sound issue to resolve the occlus link system worked flawlessly. I will watch your guide and see if I missed anything. Hope this helps someone maybe it's the fact my ageing 2070 could not handle some of the settings.

if you had no audio with air link then go to your pc sound settings and make sure the headset is set as default for playback. Also I don't know what this beta windows occulus software is but they have a none beta pc app if you search occulus pc app. I use that with airlink and have had no issues with any game so far.

One of the most important things to have for a wireless PCVR experience is a wifi6e router. Since Meta Quest 3 has a wifi6e adapter built in, you are leaving performance on the table by not using a wifi 6e router beaming to your Q3

I think that will improve latency, but performancewise will be the same, 6e will not give aditional encoding, decoding, or framerate improvements (performance), it will only speed up latency and networking.

Not exactly. sure wifi 6 is faster but it has less penetrarion so it depends on your setup

@ScorgeRudess I think if you had to choose between a graphics card, cpu over a router than it makes sense to choose a GPU in terms of graphical fidelity? But if you ignore getting a wifi6e router than it's like choosing higher latency and stuttering, investing in a powerful PC and skipping an integral part to wireless PCVR, the wireless aspect

@@meejmuas8686 You are right, and I agree, and Wireless is an essential part of the experience, but wifi 6 vs 6e will not make such a more noticeable improvement, than if you change a GPU/CPU for example. It will make an improvement of course but saying that "leaving performance on the table" is a little misleading imo.
