Going back some years ago I was working for appliance service contractors part time. I am still in touch with people who are servicing appliances. My specialty work was servicing TVs, monitors, audio systems, and video tape machines. I also did some appliance servicing at times. From what I have seen best appliances for reliability have been the GE, Electrolux, Bosch, and Kitchen Aid. Some models scored a bit better than others. But, overall they are very good. Most of the problems in fridges have been with the ice makers and the water coolers. Most models of fridges today come with water and ice features. Many people don't put in the water connection. It can be a big hassle with the filters and keeping it clean. There are the very high end appliances that have terrific service and high reliability, but for most people these are far too expensive. These are Miele, Fisher and Paykel, Thermador, and WOLF Sub Zero. This is the same for the ovens, cook tops, and ranges. In the regular affordable type appliances staying with the US and German based manufactures have had the best reliability, and best availability for parts and service. The appliances from the S.Korean manufactures were the worse of the lot for reliability and availability for replacement parts! I have seen important replacement parts take over three months. The customers had no properly working fridge. Some were completely failed. The solution was to abandon the fridge for a new one or to buy another to use temporarily. One thing about the S.Korean appliances is they were among the nicest looking and have the most sophisticated features. Sophisticated features use more computer type circuit boards which adds to less potential long term reliability. Whatever you buy it is a wise idea to take an extended warranty. It is an assurance in case something expensive fails. In some of these appliances a repair cost can easily far exceed what you would pay to have a few extra years of extended warranty. For example in an induction range some of the circuit boards can cost from over $600 to over $1800 just for the board alone without the installation cost. With age these do sometimes fail. On a $6,500 induction range I have seen a number of times an out of warranty repair costing over $2200 because the main power driver board for the cook top failed. The customer gambled on not having a service contract at the time of purchase.

PSA for anyone looking to buy a new refrigerator that uses R134. Someone else mentioned this below and it happened with my recent purchase of a new GE side by side. The floor model showed R134. When my new refrigerator was delivered, it turned out to be using R600. So even if you find a floor model using R134, in the end you may wind up with a refrigerator using R600.

This has been the most informative refrigerator tutorial I've been able to find on the web in months. Thank you for taking the time to help us non pros select the right manufacturer so we hopefully don't have problems and buyer's remorse down the road. I've been looking for a 42 inch wide refrigerator for over a year. I haven't had any luck. Was looking at the Kitchen Aid but the model I was looking at was discontinued and the new models are having issues. Can you please give me your recommendation? I've been living with a bar fridge for months. Thanks

Thank you for your kind words! I'm delighted to hear that you found our content informative and useful. I understand how challenging it can be to find the perfect refrigerator that meets your specific needs and expectations. Since you're looking for a 42-inch wide refrigerator, it is indeed a less common size but there are a few manufacturers that offer models in this range. Although you mentioned Kitchen Aid has been having issues with their new models, I'd recommend not ruling them out completely. Sometimes, issues are model-specific and the company often takes customer feedback seriously to improve their products. So, it's worth keeping an eye on their latest releases and customer reviews. Apart from Kitchen Aid, Sub-Zero is another manufacturer known for their high-quality and reliable refrigerators. They offer several 42-inch models which come with various features and configurations. Jenn-Air and GE Monogram also have 42-inch refrigerators, and they have built a good reputation over the years for their product quality and customer service. Remember, the "best" refrigerator for you depends on your specific needs including your budget, feature preferences, and kitchen design. Before making a decision, I'd recommend checking out consumer reviews, reaching out to local appliance stores for their advice, and even considering professional consultation if it fits within your budget. I hope this helps, and you find the perfect refrigerator for your home soon!

I learned today that many floor models are the r134a, but that is not what you will be buying. You’ll get the updated model with the r600a. Look at the model number on the inside label of the fridge and then the model on the store price tag. Likely they will be different by a letter or two and that’s where they sneak in the r600. They just haven’t updated the floor models.

@@onlineappliancetech it’s a r34a whirlpool MODEL WRX735SDHZ04 .. the ice maker is complete junk. The gears keep breaking. And the ice stopped then the water, now it flooded my floors and seeped into my hardwoods. I was happy to see it’s a r34a after hearing your feedback, but where did I go wrong in buying this so I don’t make the same mistake again? I want the double doors, but there’s a wall next to the fridge and it won’t open all the way. I really don’t like the pull out drawer freezer, but it may be the only option due to that wall. The ice maker and water are absolute needs in our house. We live in the hot south and have to stay hydrated a lot. Which would you recommend? Btw, I called the company I bought it from, threatened to call my state attorney general over the deceptive practices from Whirlpool, and they offered me a full refund and to come pick it up. So I’m taking it. And whirlpools going to foot the bill for my hardwoods. Everyone should be filing consumer protection complaints with their state AG over these pieces of crap they’re selling for the price of a small car. It’s the only way to make them fix the issues.

Yes, you're correct; they are phasing out the R-134 model. A single evaporator is preferable over dual evaporators. If you decide to get one, ensure you clean the condenser coils every 8 months. This helps prevent the compressor from being overburdened.

I’m in the market for a refrigerator. LG went bad on me. I was interested in the GE Model #PVD28BYNFS. How do you feel about that one?
@onlineappliancetech
@onlineappliancetech Жыл бұрын
The GE Profile Model #PVD28BYNFS is a French door refrigerator with some high-end features. However, I should note that individual preferences can vary greatly, and what is an excellent choice for one person might not work as well for another. It's always a good idea to check customer reviews and consider your specific needs before making a purchase. Here are some features of the GE Model #PVD28BYNFS that you might find appealing: 1. **Size**: With 27.9 cu. ft. of storage space, this model is sizable and should be more than adequate for most families. 2. **Design**: The French door design offers a modern look and practical functionality. It also features a door-in-door design that allows easy access to beverages and snacks. 3. **Advanced Water Filtration**: The model uses the RPWFE Replacement Filter, which reduces trace pharmaceuticals from water and ice. 4. **TwinChill Evaporators**: This feature separates climates in the fresh food and freezer sections to help maintain temperature and humidity levels to keep foods fresh. 5. **LED Lighting**: It uses LED lighting that gently brightens every corner of your refrigerator. 6. **Wi-Fi Connectivity**: This model is Wi-Fi connected, so you can use your smartphone to control the settings from anywhere. Remember, the key is to choose a refrigerator that fits your needs, whether in terms of size, functionality, or features. A fridge is a big purchase, so take your time to evaluate this model and others thoroughly. Make sure to consider other factors like energy efficiency, warranty, and after-sales service.

Yes they last longer, and not as expensive to repair if breaks later down the road. I would recommend a single evaporator, 134A Refrigerant. You can find info on date sticker.

How do we know if a refrigerator is dual or single evaporator at the store
@onlineappliancetech
@onlineappliancetech Жыл бұрын
Ask a Salesperson: The store's sales staff should be knowledgeable about the products they sell. They should be able to tell you whether a specific refrigerator model has a single or dual evaporator. Look for Key Words on the Label: If the refrigerator is a high-end model or uses the dual evaporator as a selling point, the feature may be mentioned on the product label, tags, or descriptions displayed in the store. Look for terms like "Dual Cooling", "Twin Cooling", or similar phrases.

How do you tell if a refridgerator has an r 600 compressor
@onlineappliancetech
@onlineappliancetech Жыл бұрын
Look for a Label or Plate on the Fridge: Most refrigerators will have a label or plate (often located at the back, bottom, or inside the fridge) that provides information about the model, including the type of refrigerant used. Look for the word "Refrigerant" followed by the type, which in this case would be "R600a" if your fridge uses an R600a compressor. Hope this helps!

Owned a Samsung French Door and it has been a nightmare. I heard the Bosch 800 is a good one with dual compressors but a bit pricey. What do you think of Bosch overall or is Kitchen Aid a better product?
@onlineappliancetech
@onlineappliancetech 10 ай бұрын
When it comes to home appliances, particularly refrigerators, both Bosch and KitchenAid have carved a niche for themselves in the market. The preference for one over the other often comes down to specific needs, priorities, and experiences. Here's a comparative analysis: Bosch: Quality and Reliability: Bosch is known for its engineering and consistently manufactures high-quality appliances. The Bosch 800 series, with dual compressors, is an example of their commitment to innovation and efficiency. Design: Bosch typically has a sleek, modern design which many homeowners appreciate. The minimalist design fits seamlessly into a range of kitchen aesthetics. Efficiency: Bosch's dual compressors can lead to better efficiency and temperature control, which could mean longer-lasting fresh food. Noise: Bosch refrigerators tend to be quieter, which is a significant advantage for open-concept homes or for those sensitive to noise. KitchenAid: Brand Reputation: KitchenAid is well-regarded, particularly in the U.S., and is often praised for its reliability and longevity. Features: KitchenAid offers a range of features in their refrigerators, from water dispensers to specialized compartments for herbs. Aesthetics: They often have a bolder design, with some models sporting a commercial-kitchen look that many homeowners love. Customer Service: KitchenAid generally has good customer service and warranty terms, which can be a decisive factor for many buyers. Considerations: Price: As you mentioned, Bosch, especially their high-end models like the 800 series, can be pricier. It's essential to weigh the benefits against the cost. Service and Repairs: Check the availability of service centers in your area. Some brands may have more extensive service networks, making repairs more straightforward. User Reviews: While both brands are reputable, it's a good idea to check recent reviews and perhaps forums for user experiences specific to the models you're considering. Conclusion: Both brands have their strengths. If you're looking for a more technologically advanced, efficient, and quieter refrigerator and are willing to pay a premium, the Bosch 800 series might be the way to go. On the other hand, if you're seeking reliability, aesthetics, and perhaps a more favorable price point, KitchenAid could be the better choice. Regardless of the brand you choose, it's always a good idea to purchase from a retailer with a good return policy and warranty support.

Great warning on the R600. Some refrigerants carry lube better than others, and the R134 does. Hence the compressor issues Dual compressors mean the cool air in the refrigerator maintains humidity so food shouldn’t dry out. This is what sets Sub Zero apart in the high end line

@@onlineappliancetech thanks for your response. I’ve spoken to whirlpool and their compressor is now also a r600a they said most fridges will be r600 due to emissions laws. This just confuses me even more. So does that mean there’s no chance of getting a reliable fridge these days. I’m in Australia, I thought I’d narrowed it down to whirlpool or Westinghouse but even with these brands you still get dodgy ones. Do you know if I bought one with a recently manufactured r600a whether there’s been an improvement with reliability lately?

Korean brands such as Samsung & LG have consistently low reliability & durability. I have several friends who complained that their KOREAN appliances gave them a great deal of headaches with breakdowns and expensive repair bills within two to three years of buying a brand new appliance . My own experience is with the cell phone SAMSUNG wherein the battery power started to progressively weaken after the second year of ownership resulting in 2-3 recharges within a day of slight usage !
