Buying half in USD and half in GBP doesn't hedge against currency risk, the underlying assets are all still priced in dollars, and you are ultimately using pounds to buy a dollar stock. A currency hedged etf tries to negate this effect.

@SashaYanshin

Because index funds are very passive too and tend to significantly outperform the others over time?
@navd1488

Thanks Sasha. Excellent explanation. Just clarifying, what was mentioned about VUSA vs VAUG. So even if I am looking to keep the investment for 15-20 years without needing these funds, it is still better to have a VUSA and reinvest dividends rather than the accumulating VAUG? I guess one should check the dividend reinvestment charge, but beyond that VUSA would be better ?
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 жыл бұрын
The two are almost identical. VUAG is relatively new and smaller and the accumulation is not quite the same as reinvesting (growing price vs buying more shares) but the effect should be pretty much identical - VUAG might have slightly worse natural spreads because of being smaller but means you don't have to go in to manually reinvest the dividends when they turn up.

Hi Sasha! Great video as always! One question: considering you can only buy full shares of the VUSA and not fractional, how should I invest the same amount each month? Is there a better strategy you would recommend? Thx for your reply 🙏
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 2 жыл бұрын
Good question - this is an issue only with some brokers - I am guessing you might be talking about Freetrade who don't let you buy fractional ETF shares. I am not sure what a good way to answer this is - can you flex the amount you deposit to round it to a share? Can you invest in something else that does allow fractional shares? Also - IUSA is the Ishares equivalent that does the exact same thing but is about half the price per share - might be a good alternative. 👍
@snakeslash88
@snakeslash88 2 жыл бұрын
@@SashaYanshin that's correct, I'm using Freetrade through your link. Would it be better to set a number of shares to buy every month, even though the price will vary, and flex the amount I deposit? Or consider the yearly budget I'm planning to invest and and invest all at once? I'm more for a monthly approach but not being able fo buy fractional shares makes it a bit tricky. Also, should I buy at the same day every month? It's something that makes sense? Many thanks for your reply! Really appreciate it ❤️

@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair there is not a lot of difference. The main differences are that ETFs tend to be very passive with low fees and mutual funds will be more active with higher fees. Mutual funds would usually try to beat indeces and are less liquid hence why I much prefer the ETF route.

Hello Sasha, I am currently investing through Vanguard UK. My portfolio is the following: 55 % VUSA ETF DIV (S&P 500), 20% VWRP ACU (FTSE All World UCITS ETF), 15 % VHYL DIV ( FTSE All World High Divident Yield UCITS) & 10% only Apple Stock). I am investing each month, once a month ( small amounts, total 200 eur/month divided through %). My goal is 30 years (long term) What can I change in my portfolio? Or am I on a good path? What can I add/remove and is the ratio okay? My goal is 10-15% YTD and to also have some diversification to market outside USA. Is VUSA a better option than VUAA? I am in EU, but I could only find the VUSA & VUAA and not VUSD or VUAG. I am 28 years old I would apreciate your help and advice. Thanks a lot!

Some difference in trading volume but both are huge - there is virtually no difference at all. Both have 0.07% fees and there may be slight differences in internal rules on replication but I am not entirely sure on exact impacts of those. Amazing content. You covered it all. The most comprehensive video on the topic I found so far. But, do I understand correctly that the eft expense ration will be incorporated in the spread, and no extra charge will be due for investing in it on a platform like trading 212? And will I still have to pay the USA withholding tax if I invest in the IUSA on trading 212 in the UK?
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 жыл бұрын
Spread is separate and not part of the expense ratio - that’s just the actual costs of the fund operating although with huge ETFs like those tracking the S&P 500 have negligible spreads. All US dividends to foreign shareholders incur withholding tax so yes - it will apply to the S&P 500 ETF as well. //Just the opinion of a random guy on the internet (me) and of course not financial advice

Hi Sasha! Thanks for making this video - your explanation is easy to follow and quite articulate. Since I'm going for the long term, (7-10 years), will the 50:50 split between VUSA and VUSD have that much of a difference currency exchange-wise? If so, is it marginal enough to just pick one? Or in this scenario, would you still do the split? Thank you!
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 жыл бұрын
It can do - the exchange rate is about 1.37. Imagine you invest in USD and it goes up to 1.85 in that time (which it was not a crazy long time ago!) You’d lose a hefty chunk of that much on the exchange rate. Now you would lose some of it anyway EVEN IF you invest in GBP because the companies in question trade and are valued in Dollars at the end of the day but it does mitigate some of the risk. I have those exact 2 in my portfolio.

It seems the spread is pretty low for CSP1 when compared to VUAG. If you check Bid/Ask at market close last Friday, spread is 0.14% for VUAG and 0.02% for CSP1. 0.02% seems to be the spread level for Dist S&P 500 ETFs. So CSP1 looks to be a good option spread-wise.

What counts is hedged vs unhedged. eg CSP1 vs IGUS are the unhedged vs hedged iShares accumulation line. ie the provider, in this case BlackRock hedges out the $ exposure, so you get something closer to local currency returns. :-) Best Alex

I think my use of the word "hedge" was clumsy - I did make the point in the video and in answers to quite a few of the comments on here that there really isn't a real life difference and any discrepancy will get lost in noise. There will be some discrepancy though because of the mechanisms of how and when money is distributed/redistributed and the fluctuations in exchange rate between those points but I agree with you - not really anything noticeable. I am sitting all in on VUSA now that you can't avoid FX fees :)

Thanks Sasha great video. Also wanted to add that if you’re investing direct in a US ETF you will be taxed on inheritance tax

Not with these. These are domiciled in Ireland (and some in Luxembourg). This is why in Europe you invest in VUSA instead of VOO - these will not have IRS coming for inheritance tax.

@@SashaYanshin yes that’s right I meant to say if you invest in non-UCIT then your Estate Tax tax is 40% 😬

S&P 500 = 45% Ftse 100 = 10% Ftse developed = 8% MSCI World = 10% UK property = 6% US real estate = 7% S&P Health Care = 2% NASDAQ 100 = 6% Glencore Commodities = 6% Does this sound good to you?

I am in Greece, not the UK. Do you think I should go with Vanguard VOO ETF? Thank you

Thanks - as a newbie to investing, imagine my horror when all the VOO, IVV that I learned didn't exist! It would be really nice if there was a reference for UK/EU equivalent of popular US ETFs. Keep up the good work!

There is definitely a massive gap in the information available which is exactly why I thought I'd make this video :)

Interesting strategy to hedge the currency effects. I decided to open an account in USD at my broker and buy them directly in USD. So I can sell without currency effects. What do you think about that? Ok, I still would have to wait for the right moment to sell my USD. But since most investments are in USD anyway, I am OK with keeping them.

Thanks Sasha. In terms of taxation is there a difference between Accumulating and Distributing, I have read that the earning in the accumulating are not taxed because they are reinvested, instead the earning in distributing are taxed then you loose money in reinvesting compared to accumulating?

I would also like to know the answer to this question. No tax on automatically accumulated dividends would make a difference over time

Great video! Very informative. I am 21 and I am planning to invest in an etf for 10 - 15 years without trading / buying and selling. Do you think putting money in VUSA and VHYL would be a good strategy?

Getting started with investing is a great idea - good on you for looking into it so young! Everyone has their own preferences - I personally am really not a fan of dividend funds - investing in growth stocks always yields stronger returns in the long run and I don’t fancy putting my money into something yielding less than 3% when the S&P 500 returned over 17% last year. I have a mixed portfolio but when it comes to ETFs, I keep it straight-forward and plunge it into a VUSA-VUSD combo. You need to decide where your balance sits :)
