Is Whitby the Best Seaside Town in England?
Whitby is on the North Yorkshire Coast and not your average Seaside Town. But what makes Whitby so special?
Join us for a walk and the history of Whitby including a visit to Whitby Abbey. Captain Cook, Bram Stoker and some wonderful historic streets and lanes make it a wonderful place to visit in what we think could be the best seaside town in England.

Thank you for sharing Whitby with us, so much history and the views are just amazing. I love to learn about the past history of a town or village, it makes it come alive just thinking of what it must have been like hundreds of years ago.

Yes! I am a bit of a History Head to begin with, and as soon as I laid eyes on the cemetery, I longed to read the stones, which are much older than that of the United States, as you well know. The entire town looks enchanting.

@@twistoffate4791 I was there several years ago and one of the cemetery stone that stood out and told a story. Was of a boy and a girl (unrelated) born at exactly the same time and I think they had the same surname (but can't be sure about that) anyway they went on to live separate lives and eventually they fell in love and got married and lived a happy life together and when they died it was at the exact same moment as each other as well.

I found your videos a few weeks ago and am absolutely obsessed! I am a history student in Australia whose focus is medieval Britain. I have visited your beautiful land five times so far and I'm still planning more and more visits in the future! Just wanted to mention around the 9:30 mark you talk about the Synod of Whitby. This was held in 664, not 1664 (easy to misread when recording your narration, no doubt!). Please don't stop uploading, I can't get enough! All the best from a new fan in Perth, Australia :) :) :)

Hi Simon and Will. Looks like a large place and very busy. But there’s nothing like being beside the sea. Definitely my happy place when I went to England (Whitley Bay, Red Car, South Shields.) Also went to Arbroath Scotland to visit a great aunt. Stunning place. Actually I liked the viaduct area of Whitby. Very beautiful and less people, more my speed. So much history packed into one place. Had a chuckle at Grape (grope) alley 😂. So one last video in Yorkshire. I’ve really enjoyed the series so far and I’m very grateful for what you guys do. You make it possible to visit places for the first time or to revisit favourites. It truly is a gift and I thank you both so much ❤🇨🇦take care til next time.

Many places were renamed after the Viking conquests - so they would have had an Anglo-Saxon or even Roman name and then a later name under the vikings.

Thank you for all your efforts in producing this video, which is probably even more valuable than you know. I visited the town on a busy day last summer during the jubilee celebrations, but only had 'Heartbeat' and a few Google preview images to go on. As a consequence, I completely missed out on a large number of the views recorded here and learned little about the town's distinguished history in the short time I had at my disposal. As usual when arriving at an unfamiliar location, a lot of time is initially wasted simply parking a car and finding one's bearings. My main excuse was the crowds and traffic issues, but I feel an opportunity was slightly wasted. However, this detailed background story will be invaluable to countless other people planning a more fulfilling journey than my own, or wanting to relive a visit in many years to come. Well done indeed!

I am sure we missed a few other things as well like the kipper smokehouse. I knew it was there and still missed it! Thanks for adding it in.

Just visited Whitby for the Goth weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it and stayed in the beautiful Sneaton Castle Hotel . We will definitely be going back as a weekend was nowhere near enough time to see such an interesting place .

Excellent video as was your Robin Hood Bay one. We have been many times and enjoyed also the history of both places. However I would like to say you didn't mention Whitby brewery up by the Abbey a nice pitstop after the 199 steps. Great vids.
