I bought Mr Cosman's dovetail saw to support his channel despite my thinking that it was a tad too expensive. Turns out I was mistaken it is by far the best handsaw I have ever used. A double win.

I did get some of your plane sole wax. It does work, but I found some thing I like a lot better. The product is called Slick Stick, and I got it from Woodturner's Wonders. It is intended for helping keep CBN wheels clean, but I found it a bit sticky for that unless applied to the bevel of your tool rather than to the wheel. I also use it on my bandsaw blades when cutting up wet turning blanks to keep the gunk off of the wheel. On a whim, I tried it on my hand planes. It really works nice. I may have to try your star knobs for my planes. I didn't know they all used the same thread on the advance/retract screw. I have some old planes that they may not work on, including 2 that are reverse threaded compared to the modern threads.

I love the idea of that Slick Stick, was looking at it recently. I think it’s like 12 bucks and probably would last for years.

Just received my dovetail saw, first impression is of a high quality tool, a quick test cut confirmed that. Have some boxes to make next, that should prove the quality of the saw. I've already own far too many adjustars! A really clever idea which makes fine adjustment of a bench plane so much easier.

I keep bees, which means I steal their honey and that leaves me with lots of beeswax. I find a beeswax/mineral oil mix to be a great lubricant for my hand planes. It also works great as a lubricant for screw threads, as a general rust inhibitor for all unfinished tool steel, a food safe finish, to soften your rough hands, or to ease the unpleasantness of chapped lips. I just ordered a tube of Magic Wax and I'm looking forward to putting it up head-to-head against my beeswax concoction.

Rob I've got a question. I've been trying to make wooden dowels out of birch and poplar and I will plan on making them out of maple but every dowel I make no matter how I make it with a chisel and block of wood or with a Dowel making jig they all come out really splintery and rough. How do you accurately sand your homemade dowels down to size?
@Jped277
@Jped277 2 ай бұрын
I forgot to mention it's for your wooden hinge boxes ..they're really cool. I'm kind of broke so I made a wooden hinge drill based on your design.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 2 ай бұрын
Tool must be sharp, cutting angle has to be adjusted to the species and this means a lot of trial and error. Blank needs to be as close as possible to the finished size to minimise stick removal. Dowel speed and feed rate needs to be correct. Another trial and error, dowel speed usually is fast but feed rate can really vary. I have always had to play around with the height of the cutter in relation to the top of the cutting circle.
@Jped277
@Jped277 2 ай бұрын
@@RobCosmanWoodworking that's what I was afraid of. Just trial until it works. It takes some real time to make these hinges correctly. But they're awesome after the work

One good thing about hand tools - they won't cut your fingers off or throw a wood block into your eye. If woodworking is a hobby, they are the best. I only know one amateur woodworker and he had his finger nicked by a table saw and had to go to emergency.

Of course buy a tool and find anything is wrong is not a good experience...but instead of give up at first you can send the tool not in good conditions back to RC in Canada...I can't believe they do not solve your problem and make you sad twice...unfortunately mistakes are for everyone (BMW or Porsche recall for example) but they (RC and everyone) need a chance to correct and make the answer of that problem beyond what we are expecting...please give they a chance they are professional and serious...the better world starts with us...
