I've been using this machine for 20 years and only just now found it thanks to you

1:10 I have this machine it works amazing. I actually found mine at a Goodwill for only $20! It ran like new and had all the original parts still with it inside. I've had it for a year and half now and it still runs like new.

I first bought myself in December a 1251 (think 1941 without the frills). It's a basic ten stitch machine, like the 1941, but it's a low shank model. Still has the extra high presser foot clearance, still has the one amp motor and double pulley system, but is incapable of running any of the accessories Randy's machine can run. I'll tell you something about some "repair" techs. The ones that own stores that sell machines, in particular. Randy, BTW, is not among this breed. That I'm certain of. A lot of store owners that fix machines make money from selling machines. They rely on people's ignorance to do so in some cases. We have such a clown where I live. Everyone that brings a machine in to be repaired is subjected to exactly the same speech you got. I'm not sure of where your model was built, or when, but the Ultra Stitch series are reputed to have a bit of plastic inside of them. Not a lot, but some. My 1251 has a plastic cam stack in it. Reason I bought the 1940. In saying that, even with the plastic both machines likely possess, it's still a much better built machine than anything you can buy on new. I was rooked into thinking my Janome HD3000 was made with mostly metal parts, like the hybrid Kenmore/Janome machines from the mid eighties. Well, I tore into that machine when I realized it only had a .5 amp motor on it. That machine...it's almost all plastic now. The motor, a wafer thin flywheel, and it's powered with almost every single bit of electricity because they installed an LED Christmas light where once a halogen light lived. So I bought myself what some engineers call "A Heater". Meaning, the motor spins far past it's design limits, emulating the performance of a much stronger motor. The machine, every last part made of nylon that they could get away with, cleverly disguised with older looking parts (think hubcaps covering junk wheels). The only part that is still all metal (well, mostly metal) is the machine's head and race. The rest, from the upper worm gear to the camstacks, the handwheel, commuter elbow, lower gears, even the feed dog pins that raise and lower the dogs, all of it made with nylon or that type of plastic that becomes brittle and disintegrates when exposed to heat of UV rays. My point...I'm unloading this, and two other machines that are new and full of features. Why? Because I don't want to be sewing with a paper tiger. Your Kenmore will live long past these designed to fail machines made of nylon so soft and so thin you can literally bend the part between your fingers, and see actual light through the part. Janome took a page out of Samsung's book and made planned obsolescence part of their entire product line. And this is a machine that costs three times more than a singer or brother of comparable features. Heavy Duty? I don't think so. So you were super wise keeping that machine. Even with plastic in them (again, I cannot be sure yours does, but in a Kenmore group I belong to, I was told they have the same camstack plastics mine does,). Even with that, your plastic is a lot stronger than anything you can buy on the market, it has a better motor, the dual pulley system (which makes good needle penetration), super high presser foot capability, and if you've a High Shank model, it can easily be converted to low shank. My 1940 was dropped on its back in transit from Texas. The case it came with was smashed. The machine was not protected at all, and suffered some serious damage to the paint, and the rear panel had a break on top (no big deal, I fixed it). The machine, one that clearly dropped from the top of a table or truck bed, works like a top. A testament to just how well built and engineered these baby's are. And they're super simple to maintain on your own, so you won't need to worry about some shyster trying to con you into buying a plastic pile of garbage because your machine is a "bad sew". High five for not being as dumb as I was.

❤ I love Kenmore machines. I learned to sewing machine on a Kenmore in the 60s and my very first machine was a 158.1660. I now own a 158.1931 and a 158.19410, both of which I love. I have restored 4 other Kenmores and gave them to friends and family including a 19411. They could sew a bumper on a Buick! I love,your videos and thank you so much for doing them.

ALL of my Kenmore's are great machines. That one he has is clean.

Jeans Machine. White of Elna? I know one of these companies made this model. By the time the 1990's came about, all machines were hybrids. Most had the odd plastic part (Kenmore machines, made by Janome had nylon gears, and a few plastic components, but the plastics were durable enough, and generally only failed if the machine was neglected, abused, or made to sew loads too heavy for their infrastructure). I only know this because I've torn down and rebuilt many of them from that era. As they got further up the 1990's, more and more plastic crept into their mechanicals, and machines slowly but surely started a long, ugly slide into a nylon-riddled world of planned obsolescence. One thing plastic does not do is age well when in a stressed, heated environment. Nylon, when put under load, sooner or later will crack as well. So imagine my surprise when I opened up my very expensive Janome and found nothing BUT nylon and made to turn brittle within ten years plastics. A machine that cost three times the price of their competitors. Singer, as bad as their so-called "Heavy Duty" machines are, actually have less plastic inside them than this Janome HD machine. l knew the infrastructure of the previous generation of the HD series, and it was built very much like a Kenmore hybrid from the late 80's. So I thought I was buying a decent general purpose machine (there was no way I would sew leather or pop cans on it like they do on the Shopping Networks). Finding out the stronger motor was bait and switched, learning I paid premium money for substandard junk...t'was a very hard pill to swallow. So, I know how you must have felt finding out your machine was garbage. Glad you got someone that showed you what's what, and put the right tool into your creative hands.

@@shopwornbear1171 It's too bad they can't build moving parts out of polymer, the same stuff that most handguns are made of today but we all know the reason; plastic dries, cracks and breaks under stress. Been using my Kenmore a lot lately and loving it!

Nothing like the smell of machine oil, and that steady clatter of metal on metal working in sweet, harmonious unison. Almost as good as sunshine, suds and steak....(wait, maybe not that good...LOL)

Keep it cleaned and oiled and it will last several lifetimes. If it doesn’t, call me in a hundred years and I will completely refund your purchase price. 🤣🤣😎👍🏼

That’s an awesome story and one that resonates with me. So many folks think that a newer machine just has to be better, right. Unfortunately no. The machine that you bought in 1974 was a specimen of perfection in sewing machines. Now, any machine you buy today, is worse than the one that was purchased last year. The one that will be on the shelves next year, will be markedly worse than the one purchased today. The decline is consistent and continuing. Go out and find one like your old one while there are still some out there roaming the countryside. Oil it and clean it, and it will still be better than anything you’ll buy new today. Just my humble opinion. (Based on 51 years of experience and observations) Kudos to you for your kindness in gifting an awesome machine to a person with the obvious need for it. @@theprojectproject01 I'm at 25 machines. The Japanese class 15 kenmore's riccars and the older brothers are all basically the same . Never seen one I couldn't get going yet. I picked up a dressmaker machine that's basically the same again my last to touch and sews need gears. My older , brother is a super selectoautomatic. The newer Kenmore is 158. 122/71 made in Taiwan, it has the active Bobbin like the brothers, and Riccars and some of the Kenmore's. One of my favorites and most beautiful machines 148 392 straight stitch. Kenmore metallic bluish-green it was a beauty contest one time with 300 likes

Sewingpartsonlne.com will sell you an instruction manual if you don’t already have one. There are many features and applications with that machine that you might use one day. It’s kinda awesome. 😎👍🏼

Congrats on the 1931. It’s as solid as a tank. Why she sold it is curious, but sometimes it’s about having enough space, sometimes it’s converting unused items into cash. Most of my customers who are looking for a “good old Kenmore”, are trying to find the one they mistakenly sold or gave away after purchasing their new one. It seems like all our new fancy electronic and plastic machines are having a short performance life. I encourage people to hang on to their old machines in order to have a “back up plan” when the new one fails. And…. It is going to fail. Thanks for your comments.

When I worked for the Singer Company, I used to be concerned when a prospective buyer would tell me they were going to check out the Kenmore before deciding. I rarely saw them at the Singer store again. Those were the smart ones, as we’ve found out. The Singers from that era are mostly in the landfill, or headed there soon. 😎👍🏼

Thanks for the kind words sir. We are like minded as to what we think qualifies as quality equipment. I’ve heard the Maruzen/Jaguar manufacturing source as well. Just good stuff no matter who gets the recognition. We’re enduring the heat as best we can. I dash from one cool place to another all day. I notice some customers have raised their comfort threshold along with their thermostat settings. Lots of fans going in the factories also. My next electric bill will be epic I’m sure. I agree with you that the 158 series machines were built by Maruzen/Jaguar. And I believe the 148 series were built by Soryu. I know that some of the very early Kenmores were built by the White company and least one Kenmore was German-made but I don't remember the model. Just a little history on these if you don't know: from around the mid-60's and beyond, many (if not all) of these machines were designed by Charles Harrison, who became the first black executive at Sears. He was a brilliant engineer although dislexic, and he wanted his machines to be easy to use, even without a manual. The iconic 158.10x0 series, in particular the marvelous 158.1040 was his design - simple, easy to use and very functional. Plus it could do anything a full-size machine could! And sewing machines weren't his only designs. He lead the team that updated the old Viewmaster (if you're old enough to remember it😄!) and he designed hair dryers, blenders, lawn mowers, stoves, fondue pots, Craftsman tools, the first plastic nesting garbage can and much more. He's no longer with us, but his legacy lives on in these wonderful vintage Kenmore sewing machines. I'm a collector and have a bunch of them, including a158.19412 - a superb machine!

@@PibbleMom297 I'll take these Kenmores over almost anything, EXCEPT the Singer 201-2. I own Kenmores 158-1941, 158-1802, and 158-1430. All are absolutely superb. Well designed, quiet, powerful and reliable. The 1802 is such a pleasure to use. The 1941, mine is -4, is such a useful machine. I really appreciate your history. I'm 75, and well remember Sears and what a powerful retailer they were.

You are correct on your manufacturing origins. The smell you reference is most likely the sparking of the motor armature and the subsequent reaction to the surrounding atmosphere. It’s almost like the ozone smell outdoors after an electrical storm. Sometimes it’s reminiscent of my old Lionel train set on Christmas morning in the 1950’s. At my Singer store in the Six Flags Mall in Arlington,Texas, (in the mid-seventies)we had machines that were not so good. Five stores in the mall sold sewing machines: J.C.Penney,Montgomery Ward,Sanger Harris,Sears, and Singer. Every other store’s machines were better than ours at Singer (in my opinion) because unlike ours, theirs were Japanese with precision parts and incredible workmanship. We sold a lot of machines based on Singers prior reputation and strong brand name. The Sears Kenmore was the best of the lot. When a shopper said they were headed to Sears to see their selection before they made up their mind to buy, I knew I was sunk. The Kenmore of that era was so superior to the Singer machines that it was a classic no brainer. After servicing those same machines for 50 years and noticing that all these years later they’re still the best you can find, I buy and sell them, as well as recommend them.

There was a golden era of vintage machines that personified the excellence of craftsmanship and manufacturing precision. When the quality machines were made back then, no one expected them to break down and go in the dumpster. It just never happened. Nowadays, it’s the business model of every manufacturer. It’s not IF it will stop working, but when. The price is the determining factor of the time of expiration. Pay a little, dispose it right away. Pay a lot, sew a little longer, But not much. The old 158 series , front load, 15 class Kenmores on the other hand, will last for multiple generations. 😎👍🏼

That’s a great machine and I’m very familiar with it. The cams add the ability to do additional stitches that are for the most part decorative stitches. That machine has all your functional stitches built in. I see the cam set for sale once at various sites on random occasions. eBay, Amazon, etc. Good luck with your search.

I promise you didn’t wear them out. They are made of hardened steel. Whatever malfunction you’re getting, it can be remedied most likely, with a couple of judiciously applied drops of oil. It’s nice that you have two of them. Keep them in the family, and pass them along to your favorite, most deserving heirs. 😎👍🏼

Don’t loosen it so much that it moves freely. Leave the set screw snug enough so that it will move with your hand strength, but not flop around. Then you can roll the hand wheel towards you while you set the needle bar height. It can be an incremental process. Good luck.😎

My list consists of any 158 series, front load, 15 class Kenmore machine. I’m especially fond of the ones that are made in Japan. Some of the ones made in Taiwan are ok also. Any number that appears after the decimal in the 158 series Kenmores, just designates it features, platform, and components. 😎👍🏼

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Although I can't find any information for the Kenmore c877.69 online, comparing it to my 158.13470, the c877.xx seems to be a predecessor series to the 158.xx, before they cheapened it - if you can imagine an even higher quality home machine than the 158 series, the c877 series seems to be just that.

Forget hope and substitute logic. Remove the hook assembly and service that area. Oil the idler pulley in the double belt system. Add a couple drops of oil to any mechanism that slides, hinges, rotates, spins, or pivots. Disengage the hand wheel clutch and run the motor until it reaches top speed. Keep your screwdriver and tools away from it. That will get you going.

I made a video regarding the 385 and it’s propensity to not reverse after sitting idle for a while. That’s about the only malfunction that the 385 is famous for. Otherwise, put a drop of oil wherever you see parts rotating, pivoting, or sliding. Don’t over oil it and don’t oil the motor unless you hear the bearings squealing. I’m not the biggest fan of the 385, although it’s better than most machines you’ll buy new these days. It doesn’t have metal drive gears. They’re nylon and don’t break often. Thanks for watching.

The difference will be cosmetic or slightly functional. For the most part, they’re basically the same. Nice find. 😎

I’m more of a fan of the front load, 15 class, 158 series Kenmores than I am of their top load, drop in bobbin machines. There’s often a plastic feed gear that can be problematic when it breaks. Other than that, they’re pretty smooth operating machines.

Same platform with different features like stitch’s and reverse lever. Still good.

I’m sorry I won’t be much help in that regard. That particular machine is not one that I concentrate my time on. Any Kenmore machine that has non-metal drive components is not going to be dealt with other than a customer tune up. I put those machines in the category of “not repairable for value”. There are too many viable Kenmores that require my attention, to spend the time on a machine that has multiple “tragic flaws”.

If you open the gear box and the grease is soft and pliable, it’s fine. I can tell you how many times I’ve had to replace the grease in a gearbox with a gasket seal on it : exactly zero. If you must, Vaseline petroleum jelly is cheap, fast, and easy. It’s what we used at every Singer national sewing machine service center that I worked for. 😎👍🏼

You must like her a lot. And, you probably have another one hopefully. I have customer who buys one, like hers, for multiple family members. She says whenever visits them, she knows the machine and how to use it. Brilliant. 👍😎

It needs a drop of oil on the spindle axle. Put the oil at the base of the spindle where it sticks out of the holder. Don’t put too much. Turn it by hand until it loosens up and then engage it for high speed spinning. Don’t. Over. Oil. It. Just a drop and spin it by hand. Be patient-you’ll win. 😎👍🏼

Yes it has an idler pulley between the two belt drive. It’s a stout setup that provides additional torque. It’s a system that some other manufacturers have used successfully as well. Thanks

The clutch release assembly needs to be lightly oiled. Take the top cover off, and apply a drop or two of oil where the hand wheel turns independently from the the upper shaft. It will be a few inches to the left of the outer edge of the hand wheel and just to the right of the edge of the machine casting. Don’t over oil it, or you will solve one problem and create another. You may have to hold the needle motionless with one hand, while you turn the hand wheel with the other hand, just to get it started cooperating.

Yes. The feed dogs may need lubricated and that will include the entire machine. If a sewing dealer tries to scare you off of that machine and tries to sell you one of his, go elsewhere or do it yourself. The old canard of “you can’t get parts for those old machines anymore “, usually works on the uninformed. Don’t be the uninformed. They’re great machines and there’s not much that can keep them from lasting a long time and performing well. 👍😎
