In this video I cover the Sears Kenmore sewing machine model 158.14300 threading and operation.
This is one of their more simple Kenmore sewing machines and goes not take any discs, but does have eleven different stitch patterns including specialty or decorative stitches.
I cover how to thread a Sears Kenmore sewing machine and problems to be careful of, the components and their operation on a Kenmore sewing machine. How to adjust the thread tension, presser foot tension control, the stitch selector knob and how to properly select stitches, feed dog operation, and power switch.
I also go over how to wind a bobbin on a Sears Kenmore sewing machine, how to thread a bobbin, loading a bobbin, pulling up the bobbin thread and checking the bobbin tension on a Sears Kenmore sewing machine model 158 series.
I show how to work a Sears Kenmore sewing machine and the basic operation including strait stitch, zigzag, specialty stitch patterns and reverse. These are one of the great work horses of the sewing machine industry.
Most of the Sears Kenmore sewing machines of the 70's had an enclosed motor sitting in the bottom of the sewing machine. They used a two belt drive system with a power pulley between the belts increasing both power and torque on these machines, making them some of the strongest sewing machines of the time.
The Kenmore sewing machines have an odd numbering system for their models. The first 3 numbers denote the series of the machine followed by a period with several more numbers for the actual model number. When looking for parts, manuals or information in general on any Sears Kenmore sewing machine, it is recommended to use the full model number including the series and period in the beginning to ensure you get the correct parts and information for your machine.
Thank you for watching my video on the Sears Kenmore sewing machine 158 series. If you have any questions please put them in the comments and I will answer them as soon as possible.

Great tutorial. I purchased a 1969 Sears Kenmore model 158.16011 off of CL for $10 !. It had a box full of cams and all of the original equipment. I have never used a sewing machine before, but after studying your video, I was able to repair the hems on my boat seat covers in one day! My wife was in awe, LOL. Thank you for taking the time to do the video and share it.

@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedragonfly6081 There are several reasons that can happen. First pull the needle plate and ensure there is no lint build up between the feed dog teeth. If that does not fix the problem, with the needle plate on, make sure the stitch length is set to its longest stich and the presser foot up.. Turn the handwheel and ensure the feed dogs come up through the needle plate, move all the way to the back then go down under the needle plate move forward again and back up.

Thank you for taking the time to do this, and for the close-ups. I inherited a slightly earlier edition of this Kenmore from my mother-in-law. Hi Richard. I acquired a 158.19411 Kenmore as my first sewing machine and am working on learning how to use it. It was free so there's always the looming (not a pun) feeling that there's something wrong with it, but I think the problems are mostly with me. You make it look very easy here and this video is the best on KZfaq for this machine, the only thing I had to look up in another video was how to pull the bottom thread up, and then I had to learn myself to make sure to route the top thread under the presser foot. One issue I am having is that my top thread is getting caught on the shuttle and the machine is "jamming", is this usually a bobbin tension issue or a top thread tension issue? My bobbin is not original either, as it doesn't fit in the bobbin winder, so could be the problem, do you know the bobbin part number I need? Does winding bobbins by hand lead to issues sewing? Anyway, the machine seems to be working so far, the only thing that seems a bit odd is the top thread tension seems to be pretty tight (but I don't have a frame of reference being new to this). This may be because I am using thicker thread though, or maybe the tension is actually normal. I've threaded it the same as you did here, though this model has slight differences. It would be great to see a video of how you'd sew two pieces of fabric together, like maybe more in depth for the 2 most basic ways and introduce some more technical ways. Thanks for the video!!
@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Жыл бұрын
The thread getting caught on the hook would be the upper thread and will have nothing to do with the bobbin thread. The hook may have a burr on the point or other damage and need to be repaired, or the hook race maybe dirty or sticky and need to be cleaned and lubricated. Make sure you lift the presser foot before threading and the thread is in the tension disc and take up lever. The smaller the stitch the tighter the stitch will be.

@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 3 жыл бұрын
Is the needle close to the presser foot also? If not then the needle plate is probably out of place. Hi! I inherited my grandmother’s Kenmore 158.10691. It still has the original receipt with it. She bought it January 2, 1980. Very informative video. Thank you!

Thank you. I found a kenmore 148.13110 at a Salvation Army for all of $15. Bought a pedal on Amazon for $30. Had to WD40 the entire unit after I darn near burnt/seized the engine...but luckily I have an engineer in the family who fixed my motor. Regardless, I love this machine. Your video was priceless. Now if I can get the gear on the bobbin winder to work as it should I’ll be even happier. Thank goodness for bobbin winders and other machines but your video was very very informative. Thanks again!

Just got gifted a gorgeous 1960s Kenmore model 1249 with amazing stitch capabilities that can handle every type of material even had original accessories such as feet, instructions manual, even the original brushes and needles 😂 is so clean too, I can’t believe this thing says it’s made to handle thick twill leather and denim like a champ! Has stretch stitch and ten stitch styles! I’m in love with it! New plastic machines just don’t twirl my beanie lol! Thanks for your video and other ppl making these videos!

Thank you! I just bought a 158.1941 at a garage sale and this was very helpful. Especially the bit where you said that it was normal to see a little of the top thread on the bottom, and vice versa - I thought the thread should meet in the middle so you only saw the top color on top and bottom color on bottom, and was going crazy trying to set the tension on my Singer 201!

I just watched a video from Vintage Sewing Machine Garage on the 158.1941 last night for the first time. It is an all metal machine with all of the basic bells and whistles - zigzag, stretch stitch, a buttonhole and a free arm. Excellent purchase - I'm jealous.

i recently bought this very model at a consignment store for $50....included cabinet and little sewing chair...like grandma used to have. Anyway, when I sat down to use the machine...it was barely working, even though it looked like it had hardly been used. So I pulled some stuff up online and decided to take a look and luckily all it needed was some lubrication and a little cleaning. The dust had built up in side, but still not bad since it was stored in the cabinet. And, after a thorough oil addition to the moving parts, it slowly started working and now is working perfectly. I have referred to your video because I couldn't figure out the stitches and how the little wheel modifiers and dials worked. Thank you for putting this together. I will probably have to refer back to it again...but your explanations were very thorough and helpful about how this particular machine works. It is a solid machine and sooo much better than the cheaper ones on the market.

I use the same machine. Thanks for the description of how to properly thread the top disk. I've been using that for the sewing mode too, not just the bobbin winding. One thing I would recommend to the listeners is to get a copy of the users manual for a quick guide on all the stitch functions. It can get confusing otherwise. Have a good day.

Went out to dinner with an old friend on Inauguration day 2021. Circling the block looking for a parking spot I saw a free sign on a wooden sewing cabinet in pristine condition, sitting on the curb. I already own a BROTHER and a DRESSMAKER that share one cabinet. The one on the curb was a solution to a long-time problem. It also created a new problem. Inside was a 1974 Kenmore that Sears distributor in Canada sold. Model 148-12501 in immaculate condition and looked brand new. It even sounds like it was made last week. Not one scratch and no dust or lint. Now I need to figure out how to reposition the needle, how to set it up for double needle and thread it from a spool to the first element. I already know how to thread it from the tension disk to the needle. Thanks for making your easy to comprehend tutorials.

I have my grandmother's old high shank Kenmore model #148 41500 which I'm proud to now own. I'm learning to sew, and love this machine. It comes with the wood table it's attached to, and I believe it's a cast iron bottom. It's so heavy! And it's a beautifully popular 60's olive green color. This is a very good teaching video about the Kenmore! I've learned some things through this video, such as the tension release with the presser foot raised. I wish I'd have found this video months ago!! Mine has no knobs, but rather two different levers for adjustments of stitching. But I want to know how to change the presser foot to another with a different function, and if there are other feet for the high shank vintage Kenmores, such as a roll hem foot. Thanks for the video.

I've had the Ultra Stitch 8 for 40 years--it was my first machine and it still works great. I broke the plastic extension table a few years ago, so I picked up a Kenmore 6 stitch (158-13400) at a Goodwill store for about $15. Recently I found a 10 stitch (158-12512) for only $10 at the Restore and couldn't pass it up. They all work and now I have parts! Mine are all portable machines and have the free arm.

This is the second time I've watched this video. I own the exact same machine, and I can't praise it enough. I also own the free arm version, 158-1941. Other than the singer 201-2, I'll take these over anything. Smooth, quiet, powerful, and reliable. Pity Sears isn't still around and more pity for the plastic junk of today.
