Shelter battle 2.0! According to the 'survival rule of threes' one can stay 3 hours in extreme elements without shelter. So we start this challenge 3 hours before sunset on a day with harsh Irish weather. Each of us has to make a shelter to stay and survive the night without sleeping gear. We use basic bushcraft tools: axe, knife & saw. We also get one match each to make a fire with. We do have a little campfire cooking dinner break to keep things fun.

Except the stuff these guys do are a pretty good example of what not to do. Dylan knows enough to probably survive for a little while..but holy shit the other guy is just putting out dangerous information in every video I've seen him in. My children can build a better shelter than he did in half the time without tools. His shelter was HUGE and he kept saying it was small. One of the most basic and first survival shelters you should learn to build is a debris shelter that requires zero tools. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqtydLeUsrCUc5c.html

In Italy Is fucking illegal to light a fire under almost any circumstance. You can't make shelters or cut any tree, not even the dead ones. You can't even light fires on private Land. Basically in my country bushcraft Is illegal

But late, but I'm voting Dylan winning this one. Given that *both* fires failed to start under the original conditions, assuming this was an actual survival scenario, the smaller debris shelter would (as you guys noted) have been *enormously* more warm and survivable. The fire was darn useful for Dylan to warm up during the night, but without it having been made pretty much inside Julius shelter, the larger, open-faced shelter would have been nearly useless for staying warm, far worse than the smaller debris shelter. To be honest, I couldn't have pulled off either that fast, I'd have been busting out the tarp and ridgeline pretty darn fast as dark fell. XD Great fun to watch, thanks for sharing with us!

Just looking at them, I would have chosen Dylan's to spend the night in. Sounds like the fire proximity gave the edge to Julias and the raised bed was smart as well, call it a draw? Great video! I love the longer content!

Excellent video guys! For efficiency my vote goes to Dylan, but here’s an idea: make a long fire first, heat the ground for as long as possible, gather your materials, move the fire and build over the hot ground. Then your bedding dries out and you have heat rising all night. Another good shelter is a long A frame with one closed end and a really thick pile of leaves inside. About tall enough to sit in. You can heat the ground first, too. The A frame is covered to be rain proof and you sleep in the leaf pile which stays in place because of the frame. You can make a small fire inside too.

I like the part where they cut the wood up and all the SMOOTH and GEFIIIIIXT. But seriously, awesome stuff, I love how you two do real situations and don't wait until it's perfect conditions outside. Maybe you do something like this where you have a day or two before the bad weather to put some time in making a really tough and waterproof shelter? Either way, fantastic stuff, keep up the awesome work!

You fella's need to have an pre selected agreed upon "safe" word or phrase encase things aren't going as planed. That way you can break out contingency items to keep from having a real emergency. Such as headlamps, lighters, dry tinder , food or water . Hate to see you getting hurt or worse. Just an idea.

If anyone ragged on you here in comments for the matches, tell 'em to go shag 'emself. Key word, survival. No messing around with exposure trying to please a viewer. (you did start pretty late in the day and again starting the fire though). I'd have had the fire as soon as I established where to set camp. Campfire is my lover out there.

May I suggest browsing the area for 2, 3 or even 4 slender live trees, saplings perhaps, that bent toward each other, lashed, inside branches removed and a light lattice work to support bows, reeds etc? It cuts one heck of a lot of time. Then just disassemble it when you leave. Its something I did in Virginia some 40yrs ago. With only 2 saplings. I could jump and down on the top of it. Then I stuffed my tiny long house with leaves front to back, top to bottom and crawled in the middle for the night.

Yeah man, gotta go slow with this stuff. Just yesterday I challenged myself to meet 3 goals in the woods: •Make weapon •Make sheter •find and use a reliable food source I had 0 tools. Only went in with clothing. Whilst gathering pines to roof my shelter, I was pulling on one hastily but it was too strong. My hand slid down it and the little bits on the bark sliced my damn hand open. I went the whole day with a bleeding hand.
