I was wearing a Shoei (full face) helmet when run into by a car. I was thrown into a large rock embankment receiving a head injury that left me in hospital and off work for over a year. My helmet saved my life. My 2 cents worth, pay whatever it costs for the best and safest helmet. They’re worth every cent/penny.

Same thing happened to me. 25mph into the side of a taxi. Through the window ending up with a broken jaw, and nose and a split open lip. All while wearing a full face arai. When I see (mostly) young girls riding round wearing open face helmets on scooters i just think why even bother. I don't think i could personally ever wear an open face helmet and feel safe in any way. And after all, isn't that the point of helmets.

For road riding in particular, a good full face or flip top helmet. A few years ago when I was 20 (I'm 62 now) I got a tank slapper at 105mph (Honda 500 Four tapped out chasing a Z900). Of course I fell off and tumbled. Next day when my mates brought my helmet to me in base hospital the road rash went in 5 broad swathes with one set of deep gouges across the chin bar and front brow. That would have been my face on tarmac without a full face. So I agree with others here. Buy the best you can afford, but make sure you go for protection first, not looks.

Nice overview and guide. I rock my full face Shoei RF-1200 and love the thing. You are 100% right, it's about the fit assuming it's met all safety requirements. I sprung for the transitional shield and found that was more than a luxury, I now consider that a necessity.

Interesting point about the "feeling disconnected" sensation, I can definitely relate to that as a former daily full face wearer. I never used to wear earplugs, but the helmet still actually dampens out quite a bit of sound, adding to the "feeling like you're indoors" sensation, particularly noticeable if you're stopped at traffic lights. Very interesting. I've never heard that articulated before. So true.

I have had all sorts of lids and full face , and flip up ones, they've all served there purpose over the years, and I've been pleased with all of them , it's a matter of taste and looks, I've recently purchased the last one you showed in the video, so you have the best of both worlds, it's open face for summer riding or closed face for winter or whenever you just want a change, this gives you the choice, I'm very pleased with it and it offers protection and looks good, so alround happiness.

When I was a young lad, many moons ago, I hit some ice, skidded, hit the road curb and came off. I face planted into some grass and dirt but thankfully I wasn't going very fast. When I took my helmet off there was a big chunk out of the chin guard. That would have been my face, even at slower speeds. I would never wear an open face helmet after that minor but significant off.

Full face only. I once lost the front, fell forwards, landed on my hands, broke an elbow from the impact, my hands couldn't support my weight anymore and slammed my chin on the tarmac at 40kph. My quality helmet absorbed all the impact, it wasn't even top of the line, around 400 euros. Don't skimp on your helmet.

Great video sir. I would like to add that with a premium helmet, particularly Arai, is the service you get for the money. Go to any show where there is an Arai stand and they will clean it, check it over make adjustments and lube the visor mechanism free of charge. My bike shop will do this every 6 months for 4 years with an Arai or Shoei.

Great vlog, very informative as always. I have always brought the best helmet I could afford, as they say, “you only get one head.” Initially I brought full face race replicas and had an Arai shaped head. However a few years ago while searching for a new lid I discovered Shoei had changed and I now fit shoei. I have ridden with a flip front for work since 2004 and initially would not have used one on my own bike, however the next lid I buy with be a Shoei Neotec like the one I wear at work but in a different colour. Best of both worlds and now rated as a full face and with a flip down sun visor. Although I have light sensitive eyes and always wear a dark visor on my own bike during the day.

As it pertains to modular/flip up helmets - others have mentioned that depending on the mechanism and quality they might be prone to opening in a crash. However, I would add that they are invariably 1) noticeably heavier 2) noisier and squeakier and finally 3) they do have a tendency to leak through hinges and seams that don’t exist in full face helmets. I’ve been riding for 20+ years and like you have all types of helmets (and bikes) and they have their benefits but that said 98% of the time I ride in my shoei full face (rf1200). Keep up the good work. You’ve come a long way in the last 18 months.

After 32 years of riding and having owned god knows how many helmets, the Caberg Duke is my number one favourite which I always come back to. It's really good value' it's a flip front which I prefer for the reasons you mentioned ; It's pretty light; it fits my head shape perfectly (something you do need to consider when trying out helmets, as the interior shape varies as well as the exterior shape); I can have a quick coffee or cigarette ( :/ ) without removing it. And I think it looks pretty good in either black or white. Tbh, these day I don't see what the expensive brands offer over these more cost conscious lids other than badge kudos.

In 1972 I came off at 70-odd mph and the kerb edge caught me square on the front of my full face helmet. It was the first of the Bell Stars costing £24.00, a months wages at the time. The visor was badly scuffed and there was a crack apparent on the chin guard. I sent it off to Bell who replaced it F.O.C. Importantly, my face if not my life would have been compromised if I had not been wearing a full face. Nowadays, I use a Bell Star whilst on my Diavel but, whilst frequently riding in Gran Canaria, a Nolan modular as it helps with ventilation in the heat and the road speed in the mountains is comparatively low, circa 25-40 mph and I can convert it when higher speeds are apparent. Great video again, Mr. Flyer.

Try different brands before you buy...but most important of all, make sure it's a good fit for your shape of head. Any of the Arai / Shoei reps, and/or, any reputable motorcycle store will help you in this, just don't be shy about asking for assistance. My first lid was an AGV which I loved, but, the store I obtained it from was more interested in the sale than my head...as, unbeknownst to me then, it was a half-size too small...and after an hour, it started to burn! Ouch! But I did love it! The next one(s) were Shoei(s) - as they best fit my noggin, and, were of excellent build; mostly flip-ups, as they suited my needs best of all. Later, I did get an LJC (?) flip-up which did just as good, and, proved its worth when I took an unexpected 'off' whilst on a spin to Portugal, some years ago: my (lurvley) shades were wrecked, my noggin was intact, and I was hospitalised overnight, and, as the bike was down a very deep culvert, it was later recovered and written off. I knew I should have kept my RT1100 or upgraded to the RT1150 and not get 'pushed' into that RT1200 by my riding buddy. Still, it was a good bike! My rule of thumb: All The Gear All The Time (ATGATT). Why? Because I was preparing myself for that moment when I was glad that I had it, rather than praying/wishing I had it. A good set of boots (Sidi Adventure - used for both off-road and long-haul) / good pair of gloves (several pairs) / good lid - these are the absolute minimum pieces of gear one should consider to wear on ANY motorcycle / scooter / moped journey, no matter how short. Why? Because that's usually when you encounter Murphy's Law... Last bit: get some good training in, if you can. I went the enduro / off-road route (Desert Rose) and on-track at Silverstone - which cured my need for speed! lol Good fun, hard work, but worth the investment in upgrading my riding skillset. And, I planned to do more of the same, including Trials - for greater bike control skills; all of these different courses all helped my improve my on-road skills, and I would seriously encourage any rider to invest in themselves in this manner...it's always money well-spent, imho! Forgive the ramble, and, RIDE SAFE! Cheers!

I'm just starting to get into bikes, I've just bought a Shoei RYD, expensive, and considering the fact that I haven't even done my CBT yet, some would say foolish, but, I'm not sticking my swede into a sweaty, previously used lid, and as a learner, if I were to have an accident, I want the same level of protection as anyone else out there....Plus it fit me perfectly 🤷🏻‍♂️, money well spent perhaps? I'd like to think so, but time will tell 😄...really nicely put together videos here too....

Shark Evo helmet I have (convertible/flip back). I specifically bought a silver colour because of the risk statistics. I can't find the article but I read that there is a psychology behind it more than just being "brighter", it's that if a road user is able to see the helmet differentiated from the body, then you appear more as a 'person' and so they will give more consideration. So might be best to have a helmet that doesn't match the rest of your riding apparel (can't find the source, this was from a few years ago, but I think it might hold some merit). Might be linked also to the study that showed drivers would give bicyclists (without helmets) more distance than the other way around, when over taking.

Great summary! I have different helmets for various types of bikes. Like you, the X4 (XD4 in the US) is my favorite for upright touring bikes like the GS. I was recently given a new Arai DT-X and noticed it is significantly quieter than the XD4. I usually wear ear plugs anyway, but I was surprised by the difference. I tend to trust the brands as well as the respective ratings (e.g., Schuberth and AGV for European standards and Arai for Snell). I often work with mentally disabled adults and can’t imagine riding without a quality, first tier helmet. It’s amazing how nonchalant some riders are, with no thought of what life would be like for them and for their family if they were to suffer serious trauma.

Great video. I've moved from a flip front to a full face, no problems with the flip but I felt in the current climate here in Scotland a full face would be a little better for me. One thing, what are your thoughts on the helmets coming with integrated LED lights? I picked up a Shark Skwal (Flynn) and it comes with light strips on the front and rear of the helmet. I 've found it to be quite handy commuting in the darker mornings and nights. Helps that the helmet is a nice change from my Caberg one I had before.

From my experience the best helmet depends on the bike and the riding style, the full face to a more sporty driving position because they normally offer better aerodynamic resistance and are safer from a structural point of view, for touring bikes no doubt the flip up helmets, like the shuberth c3 pro, are the most comfortable and functional option, you can have the best of both worlds, the modular helmets are designed for a more up right riding position, so to me for my naked bike what I like the most is the shoei rf1200, for the multistrada I love the shuberth c3 pro, the most comfortable and quiet helmet I ever tried, I have other brands like ls2 but for me there is a big difference in the quality of construction, comfort and the driving experience with a premium helmet is totally different from a mid-range helmet, a helmet is just as important as the motorcycle, from my point of view if you can, buy the best and you will not regret it... Nice video TMF

I enjoyed this presentation. I think you have covered most of the bases here. One thing I would like to see helmet makers get on board with is more of the Transitions type visor that can go light or dark depending on light conditions. I think this should be a key area of development. The internal Sun visors are very nice and most of my lids have them, but many don't like them and that type of lid will never get a SNELL rating, so I think the transitions visor would be a great add. Next, there hasn't been any great leap in shell design or EPO liner in recent years. Of course this is making the call for them to make a safer helmet. The downside to this is the presumption that this would drive prices up, which frankly nobody wants! Helmets are expensive enough as it is. I tend to think that helmet makers have been riding the gravy train as of late really. No new innovation to speak of, but creeping prices up over time. Finally, there is the subject of "Smart" helmets that may be coming into the market over the coming years. How much technology does one really want to cram into their lid? 360 degree camera systems, HUDs, built-in comms, GPS, etc.? At what point does the rider get distracted by all of this tech. invading your space? Frankly I don't want any of it! So my pick? I like the full face offerings best. Full face with Sun visor, like my GT-Air. Modulars are nice too.
@chiefynutz

Great informative review. Been wearing a Spada open face on my scooter for the last 5 years. The lightest, most comfortable and quietest helmet I've owned and all for £35. Glasses and a neck tube give protection from the elements but I worry about the safety issue. May give the LS2 a try. Thanks.

A decent modular is far more protective than any open face. The UK SHARP testing site is a great place to see how safe a particular helmet is.

One point that is worth mentioning, the more expensive helmets tend to be top-rated for safety but also light and quiet at high speeds. This is where we see value from Shoei and Arai. My daily go-to helmet is the HJC IS-MAX which as an inexpensive modular. Heavy, noisy and fits my head perfectly. I have helmets that cost five times more but none feel as good on my egg and I just use them on trackdays.

Shoei Neotec 2 is one of the few flip helmets that are legal to ride with chin flipped up. I find mine very comfortable. I have a J-O open faced for some lower speed local journeys. On the whole I think full face are best and I prefer double-D clasps. I tend to get rid of old helmets.

Just before I got my first bike I bought HJS IS-17 which scores 5 stars in sharp test and it cost me 100 quid on offer. Pretty decent, only mistake I made was buying dark colour which I regret now, but haven't been thinking about visibility as a fresh rider.

Another interesting review. My most recent purchase and current favorite is the Bilt/Sena 2.0 modular helmet - maybe the best street helmet for the price point? Still own two older full face helmets in good shape IMO - won't discard until they're in a major accident. When I first saw a modular many years ago I didn't like them right away because the person I first saw wearing one was disliked by me! A real character he was and moved away long ago - strange creatures we are. Keep up your good works.

After many years of wearing Shoei helmets I bought an HJC modular and I really like it, love the flip downier sun visor. On our vacation this year we were in the SUV and I caught an intense setting sun while in construction and merging traffic, I was blinded enough that I decided to search for a modular that included the inner sun visor and a peak. I bought my first Shuberth, an E1. I had thought of myself as a reformed helmet snob, I really do like the HJC modular, but the Shuberth is in a league above for one reason, it is quiet. I've always worn ear plugs but I don't need them with the E1. My only negative is that the helmet is tough to get my head into, without hurting my ears. I also have to remove my glasses to don & doff the lid. Maybe shell is more rigid than the other brands or the opening is just that much smaller. For short runs I'm wearing the HJC and distance rides get the E1. All these old helmets that I have taking up space, what is the best way to get rid of them besides throwing them in the trash?

I prefer to wear an open face with a visor and a peak, motorcycle postmen in Australia use them, aka posties. I actually bought one from Germany and it works a treat, it has a peak and visor as well as a small tinted visor that flips down. Being one who has to wear glasses full face helmets are the pits, especially if it is raining, taking the glasses off and finding a place to sit them while putting the helmet on is such a faff. And the big bonus with the open face style as you say is visibility, little thing like looking at the speedo is easier, with my adventure style helmet the chin bar gets in the way so I have to drop my head a little to look down to see the speedo. Thanks for the vid once again good sir.

TMF, when I was reviewing lids last year I did a lot of reading. I spoke with a few motorcycle gear sellers and they confirmed what I believe. There are many cheap helmets that score far better than the more expensive well know brands and the reason I was told is that the cheaper brands make the helmets to pass well on the independent tests but the tests don't represent real world crashes too well. The likes of Schuberth, Shoei, AGV etc. have confidence in their own research and development. I must admit I picked up a Caberg helmet in a store and the guy working behind the counter told me to flex the helmet. It didn't inspire confidence. He smiled and said does that give you your answer about buying a decent lid.

They flex to absorb energy (think Newtons laws) you wouldn't be able to get one on otherwise either. I would always trust independent government testing over some salesman's patter I reckon. Now I'm off to buy a Bellstaff jacket as clearly it's safer than my Dainese as it's twice the price....

I get what you're saying and I agree more expensive isn't necessarily better. My helmet choice was based on a nerdy amount of research but you can get court up in all the figures. That Caberg helmet though, didn't inspire confidence and yeah Bellstaff know how to charge.

SHARP test is highly controversial. they test helmets on areas that are statistically almost never involved in a crash while they ignore more important areas. there is even a UK university paper published, analysing the SHARP thest methods, and its saying more or less what i just mentioned. you cant expect a 50 euro helmet to be safer than a 700 euro helmet. and yet, there are many examples like that on the SHARP page

Thank you for making this video. Here in the U S , each State sets it own rules on helmets, as to who has to wear them and what markings are needed. For example, in New Jersey, each helmet must have a 4 square inch reflective on it. In Pennsylvania, no helmet is required for certain riders.

Hi TMF great timing as I have just returned my hjc Rpha 10 after 13 months and have had a call from the shop saying hjc will refund so I am now in the market for a new lid. My hjc was perfect it was so light, comfy and looked the part unfortunately I had the lock catch snap on 5 visors in 13 months! I'm looking at the shoei nxr, gt air or an arai chaser but in an ideal world I'd have my hjc back with a visor without a locking tab. Decisions decisions but so far I'm none the wiser on what to go for. Great vid as always thanks 👍🏻 p.s great to see you've hit 50k no more than you deserve hopefully they keep on coming

Good review. Just one more disadvantage of full face helmets that for someone who wears glasses like me, in order to put a full-face helmet on and off I have to take my glasses off and put them back on, whereas with an open face it's not necessary so that saves a few 'moves'. But for safety for sure go full-face or modular. On my motorscooter around town I wear open face, on my supermotos it's full face.

I've always had full face helmets as they give the best protection. Last year I bought an adventure style lid and I tend to use this more and more. Better field of vision all round means I see more of what's going on around me and view of the landscape I'm travelling through. I also find it is less likely to fog up because of better airflow into the helmet. I can see a series of these encompassing gloves, boots, armour, which is something all new (and some experienced) riders could benefit from. You seem to have your finger on the pulse and technology in gear is always changing (the advent of novel materials like D30 for example), so anyone can learn something new.

First things first: The best protection will always be a full face and you're 100% correct, the jaw area takes a lot of the hits. Currently on my second ICON full face, next helmet purchase will be a MODULAR with all the available gizmos and bells. Sometimes I need to walk into a petrol station to pick up the receipt and I have to take off my tight sweaty helmet before because I don't want to be mistaken by a robber and get shot. Other times people are trying to talk to me in a hurry and I can't properly communicate and to make matters worse I ride with ear plugs too. So . . . MODULAR all the way. I have faith the locking mechanisms are good enough now a days to take the brunt of almost anything you can throw at it (I hope, fingers crossed).

I took a wood pigeon to the face in the autumn at about 50mph and was glad to be wearing my flip front helmet in the correct position - though wish the visor had been fully closed! The impact pushed the visor pretty hard into my nose - through the sun visor - and streaming eyes made visibility an issue for a bit! The bird died and I took quite a yank on the neck along with a squashed nose but all I had to do was refit the sun visor when I got to work and buy a new main visor as it had ended up with some knarly scratches. When I also think about this and some of the rocks that have bounced off my visor when I'm out, I have to say the open helmets are asking for trouble...

On the flip front side, have to take this in consideration. In italy, unless they have a double homolagation (open and full face) you have to ride with the helmet closed (fullface), or is like ride with an illegal helmet, don't know if this rule applied in the EU or else where. Pus in Italy there are rumor that the double homolagation will be removed and so, if it pass, only ride with the helmet closed.

Full face helmets all day every day. I realize that open face helmets look cool, specially when you are going for the retro look, but you won’t look so hot when you’ve grounded off your jaw or your nose on the pavement. I flew medevac for 7 years, and although I didn’t see as many motorcycle victims as the rotor wing crew did, I saw plenty to make me a believer of full face helmets. I do curse my RF-1200 when I’m stuck in traffic in the middle of summer but it’s a small price to pay. Cheers.

I came back to biking after a very long time, after much research plumped for the Shoei Neotec. After a massive 9'weeks I'm happy with it. It gives full face protection but is easy to flip the front up to put on and off, or just get a blast of fresh air. Its internal sun shade works pretty well, wind noise is reasonable behind my RT's screen too. Only downside is glare from the low winter sun.

Hi TMF, great vid as always. On the topic of buying a new helmet I wondered what your thoughts were on buying new from the inter web? Needing a new lid, ordinarily I would always go for a test fit in a shop but with current COVID restrictions this is difficult (?). I’ve watched a few vids ref “self sizing” but wonder what the returns policy might be if, say, the helmet turns up right size but you are still not happy with the fit? I’m guessing the answer maybe: read each web sellers “returns”policy carefully? Anyhoo, just thought others maybe thinking the same. Ride safely.
