Input is how much heat you want to go into the bricks so turn it up if it gets cool in the evening and down if it's still hot at bed time the output is release of that heat

Just a quick question why do older storage heaters perform better and also give heat while charging whereas the new ones only charge at night and release it all throughout the day.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy Жыл бұрын
Good question Think of the older one like broken thermos flasks and the new one like thernos flasks that work The Old ones have very poor insulation and the new one a well insulted The new ones only release heat when set to do so the old ones leak all the time so in late afternoon there are depleted so from say 16:00 they start getting cold. They then take a full charge each night the new one only release heat we programmed to do so and when the air temperature drops below their target temperature so at night they just top themselves up using a lot less electricity Please consider subscribing to help me grow the channel

For the panel heater if we only switch it on at night, will you still use day rate or it will use night rate?
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Only if the whole house switches over to Economy7 electric at night ( 23:30 to 06:30) it will be only cheap to run then. But If you have 2 consumer units / fuse boards it will use day rate 24 hours a day even during the off peak period

Have just fitted a small FXL Dimplex 12kw.. Running from two 13amp sockets as I don't have Economy7 but do have solar panels and am looking to have its Off Peak wired up to an PV energy manager to harvest surplus power during the day. Two questions.. When turning on booster fan (with the bricks cold) it blows out hot air from the front bottom right corner. It is extremly hot air and the outside casing gets very hot very quickly (about 20 seconds before you can't touch). I would have thought the air should be being expelled via the top grill and drawn in from the bottom. Is this unit functioning correctly? Also, do you know if the Storage (Off peak) supply is a simple resistive load circuit.. so will be happy to work as expected when only receiving a reduced wattage supply from the PV energy manager. By the way, I think you mean Peak supply doing all the work rather than Off Peak supply at 10:36 Many thanks
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Not really sure how the solar manager works but I have see excess pv being sent to the hot water tank via an immersion the heat on a fxl does come from the bottom grill if there is a heating element at the bottom which works on the day rate this is for back up purposes incase the bricks get depleted on don't take a charge
@IIPhotography
@IIPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeathLazerBoy Yes, the PV manager can send to any resitive load such as an immersion heater element.. the one we have ready to fit will manage two output streams prioritising one and treating the second as an additional destination should the first cut off because it has reached its objective. We will have it wired to the immersion for hot water as primary load and, when water reaches temperature it will switch to the storage heater to soak up any additional sunlight not being used at that time by other devices within the home. I'm hoping that the storage heater off peak circuit is nothing more than an element circuit, like the immersion, manager by a relay controlled by a termal sensor. By the way, you suggest that the CXL could have its Peak current supply disabled to ensure that accidental use of peak tarrif current is avoided. The instructions for the FXL say it must have both powers available and on to function. I assumed that was because the peak supply is used at all times to manage the control features built in to the heater, such as relays. Is this not the situ?
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil Yes that is correct the fxl needs the peak supply to run the thermostat fan and peak rate heater (obvs try to avoid using the peak rate heater controlled by the rocker switch on the side )so by turning off the pk supply to an fxl would stop the fan kicking in when the thermostat decides it needs to release heat. As the clx doesnt have a fan you can turn off the peak supply to stop accidental use of the peak rate heater . The 2 output streams for excess PV is really good idea i would have the primary excess going to the peak imersion then after that to the you could have it going to the off peak on the fxl but as the price of off peak elextric is quite low any way wouldn't it be betternto direct to some thing thank uses peak rate electricity? Have you seen my vids on Quantums and how to do a quantum upgrade they are much better and are described as High Heat Retention Storage Heaters HHRSH kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibaGo5eUvNexhGw.html I am looking to grow the channel and would be grateful for any extra subscribers and likes
@IIPhotography
@IIPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeathLazerBoy Yes, cheap rate would be lower, but as we are not on an Economy7 tarrif and do not have such a meter then that doesn't apply to our situ. We are also on a good fixed rate with British Gas Evolve until June 2023 so no plans to change as we could not benefit even with Econ7. The benefit of charging the heater during the day is also that it has more heat to give out in the early evening when we actually need it. I am sure the Quantums are better in a standard situation but are probably less likely to be compatible with the PV manager scenario and we only paid something like £150 for it as a new item 5 years ago. :-)

@@IIPhotography all very good points, I just assumed E7 meter as this is normally the case with NSH. It sounds like you have a pretty unique setup would be interesting to see, Is your main heating system Storage Heaters? If so one thing to watch out for would be getting an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) if a single rate meter is present with NSH the rating is effected negatively. But this would only effect if you sell or rented out the property.

@@DeathLazerBoy Hi thanks for the quick response. yes it is a CXL, I have one switch with a fuse and one without. The fused switch powers the indicator light (peak switch) I have asked a few electricians who all shrugged, so thanks for teaching me in one video how to work these darn things efficiently, hopefully my bills will reflect this. Thanks again for your help.

I am after subscribers so if you wouldn't mind I would appreciate it 😌 I find electricians know how to fit them but not how they work Remember keep the output dial closed unless you want to release heat so the heater retains heat for longer but still leaks but not as much

I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. There is no ‘off peak’ period anymore - or the difference is marginal - so there’s no ‘cheap electricity’. It’s been like this since 2019, when there was some kind of change in legislation.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Thats incorrect ,there is a difference . I advise you to check different tariffs out and also make sure you know your ratio of, peak to off peak usage to enable you to find the correct tariff for you The best place to search is clubs.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub Free and impartial advice Just for example I don't endourse octopus but have found them to be competitive The unit rate for electricity with Octopus is 13.15 pence per kWh and the standing charge is 21 pence per day. If you're on an Economy 7 tariff, the unit rate during the day is 14.49 pence per kWh, while at night it's 7.76 pence per kWh - the standing charge is the same. Correct as of 19 Oct 2021. I hope that info will save you some money and earn my a like and subscribe 😉

@@DeathLazerBoy Hey, thanks for the quick reply. You obviously know more about this than I do. It maybe depends on your supplier, so I’ll need to look into this further. My own experience (with Scottish Power) was that up until 2018 the night-time rate was half that of the daytime. Then this suddenly changed - the night-time rate literally doubled - adding about £300 to my winter bill. When I phoned to enquire about this I was told that there was some change in legislation. The economy tariff seems to be key. I remember looking into this a couple of years ago, and it seemed that I couldn't get it for some reason.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
That was the price cap so if they where below they put their prices up it may have also coincided with your tariff coming to an end and the they tender to put the price up. Lots of smaller suppliers have gone bust so now there is less competition. Definitely do a tariff check with Martin Lewis money saving expert , the worst thing that can happen is finding out your deal isn't that bad or best case you could save hundreds of pounds 😉

I have the EDF E7 tariff (Actually E10 in my case as old meter)Current prices about 9p off-peak and 40 p peak so a significant difference, My house would be uneconomic on a single fixed rate. During the cheap times I charge Dimplex Quantum heaters and hot water PLUS my Tesla. Washer and dishwasher have timers to only run during the 9p times.The result is very little consumption at 40p rate!
